Illegal jigging in Port St Johns 2020 - The Video
Before anyone goes crazy prawn, this video was in response to serious concern amongst individuals both in the public and in the government sectors.
Please take it from where it comes, a concerned Sardine News...and an effort to create some direction out of all the maddening reports and rumours of the dumb fool activities going on in our beloved Port St Johns.
Please take the time to refute the claims and anecdotes herein - we all need to learn. But at this stage, we, and the garrick, and the kob, are in big trouble.
A quick summary of what is in the video...
Illegal jigging is going on right now, this August and September 2020, in the Port St Johns estuary. Where kob and garrick are visiting in numbers, to spawn. This is their time of the year to reproduce and we should not be killing them. Especially since when in spawning mode they eat voraciously and are hence vulnerable to not only jigging as they congregate in numbers, but normal fishing too.
DAFF have entered the fray but this video was put together as much to educate the DAFF officials as it was to educate the public at large. Thise of us who know, need to educate the others.
And finally, do not post pics or videos of criminals engaging in criminal activities. This can be used against the law in court when the time eventually comes. So. Rather email to me Sean on umzimkulu@gmail.com, and myself and my contacts at DAFF will put together a file to help the authorities carry out their job of law enforcement.
Until the next time bomb - Sean
The Sardine News has been spreading good news and useful information since 1986. Back then it was a print publication. A tabloid newspaper in fact. Which we sold all around South Africa. Since then it became a glossy magazine, then a website, and now it is a fully fledged content channel that can be stumbled upon all over the interweb.

I was in Port St John's in September 2023. I saw the locals with a lot of garrick with scars on the sides and bloodied. They offered them for sale to us, which of course we refused. Discussion with other anglers that same weekend brought to light that these locals were not afraid to illegally jig the garrick cos the authorities turned a blind eye to the activity. Apparently the authorities were heard to say that as long as the locals do it ....
@TheSardineNews

Yeah Tiger you are totally correct...the rot and corruption extends right down onto the beaches at PSJ. I have a new video coming soon, I was there again this year and witnessed and recorded it all first had all over again. Bakkies waiting in the carpark for illegally caught fish...DAFF just watching and doing nothing, but harassing tourists for fishing licenses...stay posted man

There is no concept of conservation in these local communities. It is a case of "Get what you can before someone else gets it" The sorry situation has been brought about by the absence of any real policing authority. You must see the guys finishing the crayfish on the north coast!

Hey Sean, when we were down there last week, we were told guys were jigging the day before and between 10 guys they each had a minimum of 3 Garrick! The next day we went down to 1 st rocks and witnessed guys jigging there and we saw in a space of 20mins 6 Garrick been jigged! Apparently there is a market for these fish. Some of these jiggers are provided with freezers and their electricity is paid for to man these. The buyer then comes to collect when these freezers are full. When you question some of the guys doing this they say they do it because they are hungry… they do it for a source of income. The market needs to be stopped and then we should have a handle on the issue of these fish being jigged. We were happy to meet DAFF there but they are so limited in terms of resources. I just wish the authorities would step up! Thanks for all that you and other conscious anglers do to make people aware and to educate people about sustainable fishing and to fish responsibly
@TheSardineNews
@TheSardineNews 2 года назад
Hey dude! Welcome to the permanent struggle! But ok, you have a good grasp on the situation. It's only gonna be up to us to somehow come up with the gumption and resources to 1. Incentivise tag and release with money (so damn easy), or 2. help DAFF as they continue to drop the ball, game after game (much harder). I believe you are on the south coast too, pop by I am at Spiller's Wharf these days...lots to talk about. Kent, you are one of thousands to even write to me. Nobody else seems to give a shit further than a post.
@KentsFishing
@KentsFishing 2 года назад
@@TheSardineNews yes I agree. We can never leave this to the authorities only. If every angler could raise awareness wherever they fish we would cover much more ground together. But sadly we not all that way inclined… This is why I push responsible and sustainable fishing on my channel in the hope that it may rub off! Yes a meet up will be great. Crappy weather this weekend but will give you a bell soon. My mate Darren has your details. He inquired about some fishing on the Umzimkhulu and we just havnt got round to it

There is an easy way to stop the jigging , steel cable and with big weights on both ends or lay down razor wire in the river weighted on both ends that will give the fish a chance to bread.

Yes Duran. Hope authorities worldwide can help with the Chinese thieving. But in the meantime, and closer to home, garrick and kob are endemic really. As in, the Chinese can't get to them, only our own people can. And also sort of endemic as in they are segregated and isolated populations. So, we have to do the looking after of these fragile populations.
