There are tools which you can connect to the chip while its soldered and you can read/write it directly without removing the chip.

I have a similar problem. A client had opened the imac because it didn't turn on, When doing this he damaged the flexcable in the upper right corner, so while it's not white like this one, it has some green vertical lines on the display (i tested the display using a different imac). He also took the hard drive out ("to get his files") and while doing that he broke of the corner of the logic board where the speaker is attached, making it hard to listen if there are any error beeps.

Always a danger that the customer will blame you for damaging the screen ("It was fine when I last used it") - expensive to replace, I've no doubt

He mentioned tape on the screen when it was brought in, I’m sure he will have that on store surveillance footage as well as the video he edited out to make this short and concise. Some dumb customers will still try to claim it’s the repair shops fault but I doubt they will get very far with a claim on this one.

Did the costumer try at all to shift blame about the display fault onto you afterwards? I've had all sorts of blame shifted onto me after discovering multiple issues at times, its just very hard to come up with a technique that can resolve these situations without feeling like 'here we go again ' in a pleasant as possible battle with costumer as each are of different nature as a person.

hi @northridgefix I have a question and im wondering if you can answer it I have a 2013 27" iMac that was working perfectly I replaced the hard drive and now im getting the fans on full. its a genuine 2013 iMac hard drive in there as I removed it from my old machine. I have noticed that the iMac turns itself on. but don't turn off when I hold the power button. and if I let it boot and run Macs fan control there is no SMC being detected. I did notice the 7pin flex cable that connects the PSU to the logic board is very lose could this be why ? many thanks Jason

Pull them from a known good EFI chip? That’s how I’ve always done it. I take firmware from any device I can and save it for later use.

I had a Imac 27 inch 2012 after i put a usb hub in de imac with ios firmware on it the fan is spinning hard after i shut down the imac! The fan is spinning until i get the cable out. When i put the cable back the fan is spinning again when i turn it on the fan is spinning normal when i shut it off the fan is spinning hard again? I think it is a bios firmware issue ! Can sone one help me ? Please

Nice job ! As you know, Diag leds are just for basic test, nothing sophisticated ! If leds are green, specially for GPU and Screen, It doesn't mean that all is ok , but if led is black, yes there is a problem.

The firmware can usually be reset via a disk so surprised he reprogrammed but hey each to their own

What would be more useful for the viewers (and maybe Northridge Fix) would be to provide the name of such disk and possibly hint at locations for where people may obtain it, although name should be enough. I don’t work on Apple products (no market in my location) so I’m not missing out, but others may benefit 😎

Man, I dislike these so much, first that power supply with the high voltage, than these stupid glued screens and after all the trouble of desoldering the EFI chip the customer will most like say that you damaged the screen. I have one sitting here under my desk, customer tried to remove screen but the glass broke, the screen still works but there is a tiny crack running top to bottom in the glass, not the LCD part. If I could remove the glass please? Well... no I cannot, the risk is too high. I will need to order a new screen. Here in Canada it is 600 dollars and then I still have to put it on. Customer wanted to update the HDD with an SSD.... Well, look at the cost now, same as a resale used.

I have an iMac I want to get it to repair from you but courier charges are so high that I should not spend that much for sending the motherboard there. from Surat, India to CA, USA They charge around 20000 for just sending there and plus getting back to India would be the extra same amount. The replacement of the logicboard is costing me 56000 here. the total cost of mac before 4 years was 1.45,000 rupees. Apple has just spoiled everything with their service policies and spare parts prices.
