Importance of Blood Cultures in Clinical Medicine (for Interns and Med Students!) 

Blood cultures are big parts of medical management - especially in an inpatient setting. They help us determine if someone is infected and how we should go about treating them. In basic terms, a blood culture test helps your doctor figure out if you have a kind of infection that is in your bloodstream and can affect your entire body. Doctors call this a systemic infection. Clinicians order blood cultures liberally among patients in whom bacteremia is suspected, though a small proportion of blood cultures yield true-positive results.
