IMPROV: Octatrack MKII & Novation Peak

Quick play with Octatrack this evening. I got to grips with the MIDI functions. I was sequencing the Novation Peak with the OT and then running the sound back into the OT to manipulate on a Thru track. I also played with some parameter locks on the MIDI tracks as well as the Thru.
I'm getting the hang of the OT's workflow. Loving the Scenes function to add distortion and decay to sounds on certain tracks to add more contrast. I'm finding the best way for me to use it is to create a palette of sounds I want to work with first (sometimes outside of the OT - either in other hardware or samples) and then create tracks from there in the OT. The OT bring a focus for me and I love being able to perform transitions and effects 'live'/hands on - it feels better than doing this in a DAW, but doubt I'll ever move away from DAW as part of my overall workflow.
The sound is recorded using the Behringer UFX1204 - straight into the USB drive at the back - nice and handy.

Nice and raw! How do you find sequencing the peak on the octatrack?

The creative part (jamming, composing etc.pp.) always feels better with gear (at least with some controllers like Push2). But when it comes down to production tasks like mixing and mastering nothing beats a DAW. It's simply too cumbersome and time consuming to do these tasks where you need precise control OTB. Even (re-)arranging is quite cumbersome with complex projects when you need to move around tons of tracks quickly. BTW, you get the hang of the OT quite quickly :)

Completely! I've been locked into the DAW things forever, so it's just great to step out of it. I then like to stem things out and use the DAW to 'produce' - much more control :) Yeah the OT is actually a quick learn, helped having Elektron gear before :)

Yeah like dawless is an overreaction. We can co-exist erryone. It's dogma. I can see the OT being restrictive but inspiring. The DAW is looking at a canyon trail. It's going to be a long journey. Hardware is a quick first step out the door. Anyway, crap metaphor aside, I liked the arrangement. The peak seems great. A friend has one, I just messed around a bit but I'd need to learn it. I don't know what my second synth is going to be yet. Sub(sequent) 37? Analog Four? I like Elektron stuff and have a few pieces.

Chris Dillon The Analog 4 is a gorgeous instrument. I love it’s sound and because it’s multi-timbral it can add a lot to set up 😊 And I like that metaphor! 👍

I got it late last year and I love the sound it's capable of. It's one of those machines that feels easy to play with and achieve a sound, because most of the stuff is assigned to a knob/fader. I've created a handful of sounds on it, but need to spend some quality time with it :)
