Best decision I made for the KLR, when you travel where I do , its easy to reach the range limit of the stock KLR.

It's a great way to outrun cops at KLR speeds since you could cross an entire state without stopping 😆

Very comprehensive. Well done. I just bought a Rotopax 1.5 gallon tank, and yes, it’s going on my tail rack. I only bought it as an insurance policy, as I am riding the TAT this summer. I have the same concern about high mounted weight. I’m not sure if I’m ready to spring for this tank, but I have saved this video for future reference. Thanks for the great video.

That fuel boost pump you have is common in the ultra-light rotax aircraft engines.....used to have one.

if I'm not mistaken you these also work as crash bars so when you talk price and weight those should be taken into consideration. Great vid

I live out in the country and commute to work on my klr. Round trip is 130 km. this would be great for that alone, plus my weekend off road adventures. The klr is pretty good with stock tank range but this would make it even better

Hey mate great review on the tank. I had looked at these a while back but was worried about the weight issue and I really wasn't worried about the range at all with stock tank so I didnt look any further. But the idea that you can put in 20ltrs and the weight is distributed nice and low has made me re-think the idea of it. And of course the range with the full 37ltrs would be amazing for long distance travel. Thanks for sharing. Oh and have you tried some JB Weld with your nut situation...it generally is the best stuff out there for that.

The t nut and epoxy if rrat stay with it it's like dragsters the belt is designed to be destroyed before it runs the engine. If your t nut doesn't come out during a crash you'd have another broken bolt or maybe broken/cracked tank.

It would be interesting to know the exact weight of the original tank and plastics to compare with the current set up? I don't think extra weight would be a problem seeing most of the extra weight is lower down anyway.

Why not add crash bars to protect the tank? Another benefit, I'd guess, is no rust from water in the gasoline.

Thanks for the video, it looks as if it doubles for crash protection also, doesn't look like anything is getting near the radiator or your motor.. is that right? It was hard to get a good look at it, I have subscribed in the hope to see it in action. I wonder if it fits the gen 3. 🤔

true on the tank cost; the big tank kit for my F800gs is $2400 painted, $1600 unpainted

Check out metric well nuts the next time the epoxy fails. Hardest part would be fishing it into the tank from the fuel cap opening.

@richardstamp2410 5 лет назад
The nitrile versions are satisfactory for gasoline - all other materials are very low on the compatibility list I found. You can also install from the outside - they basically are blind rivets with threads.

Cool video! I am interested in these big tanks. But is seems that the Safari with no internal pump in translucent color would be simpler and just a little more functional. What made you go with the IMS instead of the Safari? What made you choose black over clear?
@WanderingBeast
@WanderingBeast 7 лет назад
never likes the clear ones, you can just unscrew the cap to see how much you have pretty easy. IMS was easier to get ahold of Safari often have back orders , and IMS was cheaper

If I was planning a trek across Africa I might consider it but here in the states I see no real reason for a 500 mile range that's a very long way to go without encountering a fuel station I find my 200 mile range before reserve is more than adequate for anything I plan on doing

Hi I don't even have a klr and I ride drz 400e but the information you have is immense and the best! Great job. I have a quick question what if your mikuni fuel pump diaphragm fails will the vacuum pipe suck all the fuel to engine and mix it up with engine oil? Because that was one of the main reasons why many bypass the vacuum pump and just use the gravity fed system..please reply as I am planning to fit this pump on my drz Thanks for time really appreciate it And yes I subscribed!

I rode my 2008 KLR over 50,000 miles all over North America and never needed more than the stock tank. Watch Motorcycle Adventures channel. He just did a 13,000 trip across Mongolia and Russia with a stock tank on an old XT660.

Don't take this as absolute scientific fact but I think if you run one of these it negates the need for crashbars. I've crashed my DR350 with its Acerbis tank and have had zero problems
@chadkline4268
@chadkline4268 Год назад
It seems that the tank occupies fairing space, so I'd guess crash bars would protect the tank and fit just fine.

the only time you have too much fuel is when you're on fire
@danmanthe9335
@danmanthe9335 3 года назад
Is that too much fuel or not riding fast enough?
@MASTURBIKER
@MASTURBIKER 6 лет назад
So if it takes up the same space as the original tank and fairings does that mean you can fit stock crash bars/engine guards with this tank installed?

if your bike is vibrating bad check the doohickey stat. you could have slipped a couple teeth on the balancer chain.

Hi Wandering Beast, I have just received my 5.5G IMS tank for my KLR 650 C (European model). I am looking to buy some kind of padding such as yours. I am just not 100% confident about how they will hold to the tank as it is in plastic. I know that paints and stickers do not hold on plastic tanks due to fuel vapor so I was wondering how are yours doing? Still on the tank? Thx from a French follower

The klr is already too heavy with the 6.1 tank. How bad is it with 10?
@WanderingBeast

+ConditionRed if 6 is too much then you'll love 10 😂 I like the way it rides, with the weight down low, I'm a big guy who can lift it full of gas and luggage with no worries

One gallon gas = 6.3lbs 10 gallons = 63lbs
@MrCODEmaster00
@MrCODEmaster00 3 года назад
That's a 24.57 pound increase, (over stock 6.1gal tank) you could gain the same weight in body fat and/or muscle, could gain 25lbs with carrying luggage, carrying Jerry Cans, etc So in scheme of things, a 25lb weight increase isn't terrible.
