I know it tends to be in a lot of movies/shows, but with Netflix there has to be something sexual (consensual or not), and it really ruins it sometimes. Their originals.. a lot of them are bad these days, and they’re just like “oh, let’s slap some sex/assault in here”

I didn’t like the movie not because she was unlikable , but because let’s be honest the amount of plot holes and non-realism made it objectively bad for critiques. I mean this human women was able to survive being underwater for a good 10 mins+, a gas leak happened in a house that went from day to night and the girl in the house was fine, they were so focused on making the main character so OP that they made the Russian mafia come off like some petty criminals who had no idea what they were doing. The director was too focused on making this woman seem like some indestructible super villain and that just made it come across as corny.

The ironic thing is I compared this movie to Wolf of Wall Street but until I saw this review I didn't really see the satire either. But that's probably because the movie didn't really make me laugh lol🤷🏽‍♂️. However once I look back on it and think deeper on the parallels between this movie and The Wolf of Wall Street I can completely understand why someone could take this movie better if it was considered a satire.

I mean... What else can you be under capitalism if not a jackass? If you are successful (rich) under capitalism, your actions are unethical. No matter if you think so or not. Cause where the hell all your shit ton of money comes from? From underpaid exploited workers who could be earning more if not for you. So it's not surprising that capitalism's angle on feminism is all about becoming as much of an asshole to continue perpetuate the system. Same goes for capitalism's idea of anti-racism: buy from black-owned brands to stop racism. As if it helps the vast majority of non-CEO black people...

Im going to assume defenses come from white women who either can see themselves making the same decisions marla made, if they haven't already in one form or another or people who know white women who HAVE made similar decisions from which they may or may have also benefitted from personally.

I enjoy movies with unlikeable characters when there's at least some "good" or humane side to them. Not hen it's all black and white and the main character doesn't have an inch of humanity inside her. it makes me not want to watch the movie unless it's horror.

I love flawe characters. Its way more enjoyable and interesting to watch. IN movies and tv shows. It seems more real.

You can have a flawed character and still make them likable.

I enjoy stories with unlikable characters as long as their development journey feels well executed. I feel like some movies are filmed in a way that seems to romanticize or condone the unlikable qualities of the characters. Like, with 365 Days for example. That movie could have easily been a thriller with the love interests constant disregards for consent and boundaries. It's romanticized in a way where some people might be lead to believe that that's actually an ok thing for Doms to do. But it's not ok for anyone to do and we don't see the characters or the writers acknowledging that it's not ok.

Same, it's boring when the characters are super flawless and "relatable" and "perfect", like, she was made to be unlikable, she was made to have flaws, and be like that

@@CherryDiMilo can't think of a movie, but JK Rowling wrote a book about a guy who murders women by disguising himself as a woman. She tried to claim she wasn't demonizing people who are non gender confirming, but in the book they talk about how in his childhood he would do certain things that suggested he "wanted to be a girl," and the book heavily implies that one of the reasons he's evil is because he has this history. I'm not sure how clear that is, if you need me to rephrase I can try again

@@karinajones3300 I get where you’re coming from, but, for instance, there are killers in history (men) who murdered while disguised as women (at least one that ik of), and another example is that YTer who killed his coworkers and then himself bc he felt he was a [cartoon] woman and wanted to die to become that again (and chose to take others w him I guess..). There are probably situations where lgbtq+ people hurt others bc they’re lgbtq+ and either think they can get away with it bc of that or feel that they have some type of trauma associated w their status and use those feelings to justify hurting others. All of those stories can also be told without denigrating the lgbtq+ community. I think people get so stuck on the idea that you shouldn’t tell negative stories about marginalized groups that isn’t trauma porn (and god forbid that the negative actions of a person from a marginalized group is DUE TO their status in some way) but you can and it doesn’t have to be controversial.

I think it’s a little different with Joker because (at least in the most recent movie) they try to humanize him by showing how he is abused, has a difficult life, has mental illness, etc. Obviously once he starts murdering people that’s not justifiable or anything but what you know about him prior to him becoming a murderer makes him a slightly more sympathetic character.

I feel like Heathers is one of the best examples of this phenomenon. Not only are the Heathers and JD shitty people, but Veronica does some pretty heinous things throughout the movie. Just because she feels remorse for her actions does not mean we should automatically like her (look at Heather McNamara for example). The audience may like Veronica, but really almost everything she does throughout the movie should make us mostly dislike her.

@@Chris-rg6nm You don’t have to identify with every single story’s protagonist. That would make for a boring book/movie industry. Sometimes you have to write about people that most people can’t relate to. The audience can be watching for the story and you can find other characters to route for besides the main protagonist. And sometimes writing a bad person as a relatable or sympathetic character for the right reasons causes the audience try to justify the characters reprehensible actions. For example, Lolita.

Great point! That’s why I feel sad when most people nowdays say ”classics are a bit boring and just not for me so I don’t read them”. Classics are classics because they have undoubtedly left a mark in the history of literature. They aren’t always fun and full of rainbows and they may be slow paced at times but usually there’s a reason for it. Let it be to calm down the reader or oh I don’t know, make the story a bit more realistic. I’m not saying that everyone should love classics, but what I am saying is that reading classics opens your eyes to what it is like to be in different situations and places in different times.

It reminds me of when I was in English class, and my teacher kept repeating how main character/protagonist of a story doesn't mean they are the heroes of it. It means they are the one we are following along through whatever they are doing/going through. I feel like a lot of people keep forgetting that is the literal definition since so many movies now have heroes or some to root for as the protagonist instead of remembering any main person can be one whether good or bad.

The performances and writing was fine, but if I wanted to come out of a movie feeling so empty and upset, I’d watch a Holocaust doc.

I feel the same way! Absolutely love this movie and it'll probably be one I watch multiple times. I think the lead actress (forgot her name) played the character really well, and so did Peter Dinklage. But I could also be biased towards the lead character bc I loved her so much in Gone Girl as well. I honestly think she makes a really great villain/anti-hero type female character.

I think the main character is worse than a Karen, because it's easy to spot a Karen, shouting for the manager somewhere while Marla is very "posh" and put together.

Yeah that judge was a lil bitch. I just kept shaking my head at how quickly believing every word that came out of that woman’s mouth. He was chucking and jiving without questioning a darn thing she said or did. If she’d say “jump,” he’d already jumped 100 times before the command.

Yeah he sucked too, but it seemed to me like he was portrayed as the lesser of two evils, even if they’re both awful you’re probably gonna wanna root for whoever sucks less. Not saying human trafficking is lesser than exploiting old people, but that Marla’s awfulness was highlighted much more. That’s why I wanted him to shrek her, not the other way around.

Definitely! Not to mention Julia Robert's character learns her place in the end. She realizes that she's not ready for a long-term relationship, especially marriage even if it is to somebody she trusts, like Michael. Kimmy being the 'perfect girl' doesn't make her immune to imperfect circumstances, she almost had her wedding ruined, she was hurt and livid. she trusted Julianne, who knew she was thrown into being her temporary best friend and maid of honor, you can't help but feel for the both of them.

Just coming in to say that a protagonist is not necessarily a good person or a hero. It simply means "main character". An antagonist is the person who oppose the protagonist. An antagonist can be the "hero" depending on whose POV the story follows. So I guess in your example you mean either "hero" or "good guy"? It also reminds me of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend in which the protagonist is literally the "villain in her own story". It aimed to deconstruct many things which made Rebecca sympathetic and likeable (mostly using your own bias and switched between framing her actions as okay and as terrible so that you don't know whether or not you're rooting for her) so I don't think it's in the same situation as your example for criticism. You made it sound really interesting though so I'll check it out!

@@LY-js7ff hey homie, it’s called “white feminism” cause the original feminist movement in America was created by white women who pushed POC women to the side to try and obtain rights faster. They essentially said “We deserve the right to vote because we’re white and equal to you white men, we’re not requesting anything crazy like being anti-slavery or saying black people should also vote. We want something reasonable, unlike those abolitionist people.” That’s not to say there weren’t any white feminist who were also against slavery, but the movement was literally built in a way to shove other people down to climb above them faster. It’s a really shitty past and while feminism has been reformed and made a ton better than that, some people still do something similar. Some white women shove POC voices down and push their views to the side by instead prioritizing their own without the acknowledgement of their own privilege. Women should hold each other up and try to all receive the best treatment possible, but that doesn’t always happen. A lot of the time white women have it easier and could be helping to amplify POC voices, but instead they use their privileges to climb above POC. They focus more on competing with white men in power than the improvement of women’s lives, which heckin sucks. So when white women end up being exclusionary to POC women and their issues, it slips into the traditional “white feminism”

Jordan Belford stole from people who wouldn’t miss the money. Walter White created his meth empire to take care of his family once his passed from cancer . Both plots were created to endear you to the character . Wrong is wrong but we universally are disgusted by those that harm the least of these in society. Her character was meant to be repulsive and the writers did a good job of that.

Warning, spoilers below: My issue with the movie is how blatantly dumb the mafia plot is. People don't just walk off and overthrow a mafia boss with no consequences whatsoever. The movie would have been drastically improved if there were any consequences for her actions rather than her being "bad but still a boss bitch uwu". She could be awful for all I care, I wanna see actual character struggle, be it growth or consequences and in this movie there is literally 0 of that. It just felt unsatisfying and bland all the way through. The idea has merit, the execution not so much.

A gender thing, for sure. Anna, atomic blonde, and other action films have trashy reviews, even if the only difference in those is the leads were women. The lead for ANNA was very great, and the story is awesome, but m3n kept on commenting that she can't beat up men with her size (even though Russian women can have a size like her and become a spy/military). Same with Atomic Blonde, but she def has more muscle than ANNA. But if those were men, even though how skinny they are, it wouldn't be questionable. No matter how boring the fucking plot is.

If anything, Rosamund Pike does her best to transcend the shoddy writing she is constricted to (and for that, she deserves credit). It all feels like nobody knew what the movie should be, and that extends to the messages the movie sends. Is it advocating for the "girlboss" or is it criticizing her? And is it really more clever to lay it all out in the open and let us make the conclusions? It's all very alibistic and toothless and it could really have been so much more - in fact, it could play up the b-movie quality to great effect. And that would bring me to Showgirls... EDIT: I am just watching the video and Kennie does put all the problems with it out there very eloquently. At the end of the day this is a film full of interesting ideas and talented actors who both deserve a more substantial and truly provocative material. Great job!

She’s a great actor, but this is not Oscar worthy. She was able to show more range in gone girl, in which she was a shitty feminist also. If she got a nod they’d be proving the point that feminism is for white women and they experience much more privilege than any other race. And I don’t even think that’s pikes fault.

Literally YES! It takes away from everyone. That one detail just makes Marla seem less powerful. It makes Roman's threats and his whole character seem like it was unnecessary. It makes Jenifer's potential history worthless. It completely removes any "thrill" from the movie. Marla keeps winning because everyone around is just coincidentally dumb like the laser, the judge, Roman + his whole squad of people... then again maybe that was the root of the joke or something either way I'm disappointed. It could've been better.

Exactly! Its like she wasn't dealing with the Russian mafia. And what useless goons, they couldn't get anything right. The movie felt quite unrealistic in that aspect. And how can people be complaining to the judge about the same thing and he still doesn't see anything fishy? Idk but none of it felt believable. Loved her acting, but it was a little too far fetched for her to win at everything

The fact that Roman watched his mother run to the car and she never made it, then he drove off made me want to fight! Yes, I also didn't like how careless Marla was towards the end. She didn't get bodyguards even though she knew ppl probably wanted to kill her, she also took the deal with Roman even though she could have just asked for more money.

I agree with you. I think that Marla's character being gay detracted from the satirical exploration of white feminism because women's sexuality is a whole other element of gender politics, so just throwing it in there muddled the message. It would be one thing if she was just shown to be a lesbian in passing, but the film routinely has scenes of them being a couple. And no matter how sincere the relationship seems to be, they are still intentionally written to be terrible people who steal money from the elderly. The audience is supposed to be disgusted by them, and I think it's really hard in this case to separate their villainy from their sexuality because these are the only two aspects of their characters. Also, there is already the issue that fictional villains are very commonly queer-coded. The decision to write an explicitly gay villain, when there is no counter-balancing positive representation in the film and good media representation of lesbians is so rare as it is, is in poor taste.

True, but it still needs good writing and this one is full of plot holes and the Mafia is just plain unrealistic. Marla is a Marie Sue and that's just uninteresting to watch. I love movies with villains or morally ambiguous leads, but Marla has no nuance whatsoever.

Thank you. This whole comment section is low key pissing me off. Outside of sexist double standards people should dislike her because she is a trash evil person. With Jennifer we don't really know how involved with her son's life but watching her just sell everything Jennifer worked for and medicating her into a premature grave had me hot. From a working class perspective it was deeply disturbing. Ownership is important to "poor" people too. If the feminist lens is the only one a viewer wants to take then just look at the elderly women who Marla was fucking over. If they were boomers then those assets took a lot more effort to obtain due to wage gaps, discrimination at work and gender based hiring being a lot more acceptable when those women were young.The film really wasn't as smart as it thought it was to be honest. The pacing was also questionable.

@Bella Rose I didn't say it wasn't important. It's just not done well here. It was very surface and I also doubt the film makers really looked into the limitations of white feminism. Or did I miss the groundbreaking intersectional social commentary. They didn't talk about race at all in the film.

@Bella Rose Yeah no. Marla happened to be white because female leads are almost always white. The fact that the feminism displayed embodied the limitations of white feminism is the CRITIQUE. You can't discuss privilege without acknowledging oppression. You can't say the film is about a white women leveraging her position in society without showing how it effects non white women. So yeah the film makers did not care/show about how Marla's whiteness assisted her is scamming and to say that the lack of discussion about race just highlights that pov is such a reach. The film makers just didn't think of that perspective which is why Kenny said the way her skin shielded Marla stood out to her. It was an oversight.

And I'm not deducing anything, I'm talking about actual conversations that I've seen and had; a lot of wlw were mad exclusively because she died in the end, even though she's clearly the villain of the film, they were rooting for her to have a happily ever after, despite all the evil she's done, solely because she's got a girlfriend. If that's not what you think of it, then it's fine, and you're not who I was talking about. I'm not saying everyone who disliked it, disliked for that exact reason, just that many people did. Also like, I'm sorry, but not all queer characters have to be 'good representation', the more queer characters we get in diverse roles, who are not caricatures and are crucial parts of the story, the better; it helps normalise the existence of queer characters in media. Not to mention 'good representation' can be subjective, I for one actually considered it to be a good representation. Their relationship was well built, well balanced, they had chemistry, their love felt honest, one wasn't scamming the other, they just genuinely loved eachother, the little things the actors added like the looks and the way they touched... It was a good depiction of relationship for me. A character dying doesn't automatically make for bad representation. The movie never claimed to be good representation, it didn't even marketed itself as any representation at all as far as I know. It wasn't a movie about a wlw, or about a queer couple, it was a movie about a woman who scammed the elderly, who happened to be in a relationship with another woman. Even in the trailer it was already clear that she was not the hero of the story, you can tell she's not a good person in her first scene, and had she not died, the movie would have failed tremendously, like, what message would it bring? 'Be gay, do crimes, get away with despicable things'? Not exactly a message I would enjoy. The whole reason people watch movies like this (and I'm generalising here, but bear with me), is to watch the people who do bad things, be punished for it, to get the catharsis that we do not get in real life, where people who do bad things just get away with it. I also don't believe a twist being obvious makes for a bad one. A bad twist is one that makes no sense in the context of the movie, one just there for shock value and that comes out of nowhere, if you can predict a twist, it just means the writers did a decent job with the arc. And the only stereotype Marla was (in my opinion), was of an entitled white feminist who believes she deserves all the same privileges the white men have, she doesn't want equality, she just wants to be on top so she can step on everyone who's not her; and it was actually spot on for that. Oof, sorry that was a lot longer than I planned, I just have a lot of feelings about this 😂
