I love this. Thank you for this comment. It really helped me!My mom currently wonders why I have become estranged from her. Uhm - I don’t know mom. Maybe I learned it from you. Maybe if you wouldn’t have talked about disowning me over trivial things like being mad about the fact that I might be having sex as an adult, asking me constantly if I go to church when I am an adult living on my own. I had to hide who I really was until I could get away from my parents.

This are also the ppl who H8 being called transfobic, homophobic, racist, sexist, misogynistic, ext, cuz they are too sensitive to people pointing out that what they are doing is bad, and wanna think they are fully good people and are too sensitive to admit that they are jerks, not in the edgy sense "yeah I'm a jerk" cuz usually they see it as "I'm a jerk who tells it how it is and I tell what people need to hear", no they are jerks in the sense that they are just flat out wrong and hurt people wrongfully, like someone punching a person they heard stole from someone, but they didn't steal, and they just punched an innocent person, they aren't a hero even tho they wanted to pretend to be, they are just dumb and emotional and fell for a rumour without even asking if it's true

"Don't be rude" is one of the first moral lessons we're taught as children. It's mind-boggling how many full-grown adults are basically throwing elaborate tantrums over the "revelation" that society still expects them to follow THE MOST BASIC RULES OF HUMAN INTERACTION in adulthood, with there being _consequences_ if they don't. It's even more frustrating how when they _do_ face consequences, they jump through so many mental hoops to arrive at _"I'm_ the real victim here! How DARE you get offended when I say offensive things?! You're supposed to _just ignore me_ and _not react_ when I say hurtful things, which makes YOU the one in the wrong for having a negative reaction!" .....on second thought, I think I know where this attitude is coming from. Elementary & High School policies on bullying usually come down to _"don't react, just ignore them, they'll get bored eventually.... and if you ever fight back, we'll punish you."_ It's inadvertently taught generations of children that they're allowed to be as rude as they want to their peers, because the authorities _don't care_ and victims aren't allowed to do anything but _lie down and take it._

I remember when my school started the zero tolerance policy for fighting - even if someone was beating the shit out of you, if you fought back at all, you were equally guilty. My parents straight up sat me down and said they dgaf about the policy and to defend myself if necessary. I never had to (my bullies chose psychological violence), but it definitely stuck with me. But looking back, I think you've got a point. Bullies capitalized on the rule-following of their victims to not fight back. Now that they face any sort of pushback, they're baffled.

In some religions they dont even have gods, and among those that do there is rarely a fear of them. Many versions of Buddhism does not teach fear, using the metaphorical carrot rather than the whip of fear, as not all speak of hells (yes, that is plural). In the old Nordic religion the gods were not feared and there was no punishment in the afterlife. In Zoroastrism, the only fear is for what may cause illness (dead bodies, parasites, etc). Most folk religions also dont rely on fear, beyond the occasional bogyman, used to keep toddlers away from the river or similar dangerous places, and warn adults from overfishing and similar things. And so forth.

I would like to add to the “learn to take a joke” part. My father ‘jokingly’ called me fat from age 7-14 when I then starved myself. I didn’t think I was fat, but as a child hearing that you are every day for years, WILL have an effect on that child. You hit the nail on the head with this one. I've heard people complain about "PC culture taking over" since the '90s. Almost always, all "political correctness" turns out to mean is that a minority, formerly powerless but newly empowered, is demanding to be respected and considered for a change, while the majority, still more powerful and privileged, laments it no longer has the "right" to treat the minority however badly it wishes and in the next breath pretend it isn't doing so. The whole complaint hinges on who defines what's "political." Colloquially, when people use the word "politics" pejoratively, which if we're honest is mostly how it's used now, they're referring to issues which only affect other people, not themselves. "That doesn't involve me personally, so I don't care about it. I won't even acknowledge it's a real issue." I can't tell that people on the warpath against "woke" mean anything else. It's why, when asked, they can't actually say what "woke" means -- in their minds, it's just a catch-all. They can give examples, but as you demonstrated in the video, if you poke and prod at those examples, if you look beyond the anecdotes and into the real stories, their examples turn into hot air.

Not sure that’s always true. Just this week my colleague and I both had to interview a candidate for a job and after speaking with him for 30 mins, my colleague thought he would be a great hire and recommend we give him the job. I said, “Well I’m not comfortable only trusting in mine or someone else’s gut feel with little to no verification, no offense.” I think what is really trying to be said here is more like the Ricky Bobby example where there never was a sincere desire to not offend, but it’s said anyway. “With all due respect, you’re a moron… …but I said, with all due respect” type of contradictory dialog. Probably true 80% of the time, or more, just not 100% of the time.
@DarthTingleBinks
@DarthTingleBinks 2 года назад
@@jjchello Sure, there are instances like that, but in those instances I feel the warning isn't needed. You didn't need to say no offense to someone for telling them that you can't trust their gut feeling. That's common sense, really. People do get offended, so I guess the warning is useful for caution, but it's unnecessary. With the example of, "With all due respect, you're a moron," well, I've found that typically respect has to do with something someone has done in the past that someone else feels is deserving of respect, like serving in the military or... Being a parent? I don't think either of those inherently deserves respect, but typically when you insult them with all due respect, it is because you still respect what they did, but you don't respect what they are doing. And in those cases, I would think they don't deserve any respect at all. It's not so much as a warning they might get offended and that you don't mean offense, but instead informing them that they're doing something you don't approve of. Also, when it comes to instances in which somebody does not mean any offense, then I find doing what Trevor does is the best thing to do. Have a discussion about it. Don't belittle someone or talk down to them. Explain yourself, ask questions, and make headway. That is the BEST way to talk to someone about a subject or topic that might be offensive.

But Id say there are a lot more obvious and serious examples like the early anti muslim sentiments right after 9/11. Thats when things like Islam were just straight up seen as anti american and most importantly, some "devil religion" in some christian circles. I find that whole thing bout pronouns and whatnot pretty stupid on both sides as well since neither are actually discussing but poking fun at each other instead. Frankly, i think everyone should chill out and actually do what they claim: to have a thicker skin. All i see are crybabies on the internet who claim to represent some group or whatever. My local immigrant church was very accomodating of different views even though the pastor held strong views on things as well. It actually seemed kind of sweet and you could tell from the interview that the guy who made it was the most empathetic person you will ever meet (with the exception of Fred Rogers). Leave it to Fox News to have a total emotional meltdown about this "safe room" and be offended by it. I swear I laugh at these pastors in this video because they are some of the most emotionally unhinged, easily offended, and trigger happy people you will ever run into. Love the video for emphasizing that you are ALLOWED to have boundaries. It is completely okay for an Asian-American journalist for calling out Trump for making an off-handed remark about China to her question that literally had nothing to do with China. Yes, it is okay for a children's movie to show that some families have two Mommies that love each other. Yes, it is okay for women to be upset about their constitutional rights being stripped from them because some people want all people to obey their religious laws irregardless of the separation of church and state. And yes, it is okay for an ex-Christian to post RU-vid videos about the toxic elements of his former faith as a warning to others and as validation to those who were hurt by that religion.

I honestly never understood that particular idea of some kind of "safe space" at universities... If all you need is some peace and quiet, there's plenty of options, including the library. If you want to unload some baggage on your friends, you can do that easily when you meet them later at home. If that's not enough... No idea about other countries, but the university I went to (Germany here) had an entire department of psychologists to - at least in part - support and counsel students who wanted that kind of help, at zero cost of course, and usually within maybe a day of asking for an appointment. So what's the point of a "safe room"? It at the very least _does_ cost the university a free room that could be used otherwise...

There was no second step. No attempt at actual counseling. Her job was just to slap a label on someone and leave them to deal with it on their own time, with their own health insurance. What’s really wild is, autism stuff wasn’t even why I was there. I was just out of an abusive relationship and completely shattered, afraid of retaliation for finally breaking up with the guy, and all twisted up feeling like the way he treated me was justified and I was just too weak to handle it, just a whole mess of guilt and self-hatred. And while being on the spectrum certainly didn’t help with any of that, it’s something that can and does happen to neurotypical people too. But that didn’t matter. My actual experiences meant nothing to this woman. She just wanted to find something wrong with me so I would be someone else’s problem. We forget, that's the generation that's complaining about us. Hell, they still complain about that, they've just changed the wording to "violating traditional values" and "lowering property values". They mean the same thing though Edit: also it's probably worth noting as well that most of the super ridiculous cases of offense are done by corporations preempting offense, not people actually getting upset by them. It's just like when people get mad about diversity in media, not realizing that people who want diversity are also mad because corporations are shit at doing it.

I was once told “If you don’t want your feelings hurt, don’t bring them along.” (It’s fun to play with different accents with that line. I heard it from a Californian, but I like to add a bit of southern drawl, which is where I grew up.) This concept actually helped. I’m very emotional and sensitive and I was being too … much. It really did help as I entered the post-college part of my career. I would also use the line as a joke with certain friends, saying things like “I screwed up today. I meant to leave my feelings at home but I forgot and they came along with me and now they are hurt.” It did help with survival as this world is a harsh place. However, I think I’ve lost some empathy. And I don’t like the preaching about anti-“woke” bs. I have a severe distaste for insensitive jerks who don’t care about other people or other animals. Im searching for a balance in emotions… also, The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz has helped me, one of which is “don’t take things personally”, because it’s really all about the other person anyways. ❤️

Actually Tarzan was one of my favorite books when I was growing up. I've read it several times. That is how I know the racist warnings are VALID and MERITED. The whole point of Edgar Rice Burroughs' story was to highlight how the white man could triumph in ANY situation. The natives in the book to a person are evil, stupid and "dark". Tarzan teaches himself to read - because he's of noble blood. He becomes the King of the Apes.... even though he's smaller and 10x weaker.... because he's the heir of a nobleman. And on and on. The whole book was written as a testimony of Manifest Destiny. So while I enjoy the parameters and basic storyline - I can admit it was written as a commentary on the superiority of white people over everyone and everything else.

I love classics. And part of reading classics is understanding that you will run into ideas that were common at the time which are now at *minimum* problematic. Hell, there is no such thing as a completely PC classic because most of human history was even more racist, ableist, sexist, homophobic etc etc than it is now. Reading those ideas with context and understanding of the time/place is really educational. It let's you see how far some of society has come and also areas where we still can grow. I absolutely am against any sort of banning or censorship of those classics. But a warning or educational aside discussing the issues is vital. (Publishers choosing to let specific works lapse is a very different thing. That's the owners choosing to no longer profit off of something negative. Not all of Suess's works were of equal value. lol) I haven't myself read Tarzan but reading it with an understanding of the colonizing and white supremacy themes in mind would likely only add to the experience. An experience I had was reading The Scarlet Pimpernel. A really fun and enjoyable book. And also the most explicitly antisemitic thing I've ever read. I won't even repeat some of the things but trust me that it was *brutal.* It lead to me to research the prevailing attitudes (especially English) of the times towards Jewish people and what they were dealing with as a people. And how that eventually lead to the antisemitism of more recent times. Classic fiction can be a wonderful entry point into greater understanding of history.

And the MPAA (with strong Catholic ties iirc) started adding the reasoning for a rating instead of just saying G thru R. Video games come with a warning -- and of course people are still buying GTA for their 6yo and flipping out over it. I think I lost my thread.....

If civility towards them is just expected, and it is, and civility towards people who aren’t like them is disdained as “wokeism” or “political correctness,” they’re telling us they believe only THEY deserve respect. But respect that flows in but one direction isn’t respect, it’s submission. They want submission.

I prefer the phrase "Content Warning" over "trigger warning" in general. I think it puts more emphasis on the contents of whatever work, as well as a heads up on what may be problematic. Like seizure/epilepsy/photosensitivity warnings, they are there to be compassionate. It's considered harmful to not include those warnings for those purposes, but to not invoke it for topics who some people can have extremely distressing reactions brought upon them is quite comparable-if there are warnings for physiological evokers, why not for psychological ones. (I saw that Boyfriend Dungeon because it asks if you would like to disable messages from your mom, in case that would be a problem for people like me.) In some cases, like the old Disney films, it is (or should be) a notice/acknowledgment of 'yikes'-y stuff with importance of an age rating-not too important, but context. In my future, I want to be a director, and I want to make use of content warnings.

Whenever someone starts with, 'No offense, but...', you immediately know they're about to say something they know is offensive...this is actually something that I've been noticing more & more lately, the non-offended are some of the most offended, while at the same time being pretty damn offensive themselves...as someone who has panic attacks, there's not a damn thing wrong with having a safe space, but before that term existed, I said 'safety zone', but essentially the same thing, & my house is my main one, I can end a panic attack, just by walking into my house & closing the door behind me, so I fully understand safe spaces...I'm over 50, but I do understand a good deal of the changes that take place over the years, but I can also see that some things are taken to seemingly ridiculous extremes too, but maybe people who require what I would think are 'ridiculous extremes', might not find those extremes so ridiculous...

I am extremely grateful I was an adult by the time this explicitly “anti-woke” “Everyone is so sensitive” thing took hold in my local conservative community ...it’s so irrational and a fallacious response. Drives me bonkers to see it, because it’s so illogical and dismissive. Thankfully I’m not conservative anymore

This makes me think of my grandparents. They love going on about how “easily offended young people are these days.” These are the same grandparents who, after watching Wheel of Fortune almost every day since they first got a TV, now refuse to ever watch it again because there was a contestant who “looks gay”.

My parents are similar. They think everyone is too easily offended and get angry when I use cuss words 😂

I was this many years old (37) when it really struck me how insecure my Christian upbringing was. It's not enough to be told "this is what one person believes, we believe something different." First, you have to avoid any exposure to the difference at all costs. Next, you have to make a big deal about how everything is a gateway, that the slightest step off the miniscule ledge is a quick slide into perdition. You watched a TV show that mentioned D&D? Better start packing your handbasket now. Is that really how fragile they think faith and grace are?

You can’t question religion either. That just goes to show how weak they know their belief is.

There are plenty of channels that make unique, accurate, and entertaining video essays, but this channel is top tier in that regard.

I felt so alone until I found this channel. I was perplexed by the hypocrisy I was seeing in the church but being polite (until I literally choke on it) was just too ingrained for me to even consider speaking up. I am slowly finding my voice and your channel - funny, thoughtful and always eye opening - has been helping me SO much. Thank you, thank you, thank you...🙏💕
