Watch me take the Air Force PT test (and disappoint myself!)! I'm bringing this video to you all after receiving soooo many questions about the test, if it's hard, how to train for it, etc. I hope this answers some of those questions! But if you have more, at least you can ask in the comments and everyone can see there. Hope you enjoy!

FYI, those “chances” you get after failing a PT test come with administrative consequences. Refer to AFI 36-2905. Just letting you all know before you get a false sense of reality. PT tests are serious, and failing multiple times can lead to involuntary administrative separation. Good luck to all of you joining!

This is kinda how I passed my final PT test in BMT back in 2008. My friend at the time told me he wasn't going to allow me to fail and he told me to run with him and match his speed the entire time. That man helped me obtain an 11:45 run time which I was never, ever able to pull off again during my tenure as an Airman lol. I'm forever grateful to him.

You can always prepare physically and make that aspect a bit easier but mentally, that's a bit tougher to train for...as far as how they mentally reshape you from a civilian into a US Airman. It's one of those things you just have to adapt to on the spot. You can do it though, countless women/men through the years have done it and as brutal/scary as it may seem in boot camp, one thing you really learn is that you're capable of more than you ever realized. So never give up.

I agree with some of the comments. In order to get a better run time is strength training girl. Work on the legs! Let the legs carry you so you don't get fatigued as fast. Upper body & lower body. At least 3 days a week who know you might end up liking it an ho more than 3 days. My run sucked so bad, an I deadicated my time to Strength training and a lot more improved than just my PT scores. So take it from a fellow airforce sister! It will help.

The AF PT test is generally not hard. It’s harder than the Army test but as far as difficulty it is very easy. I am 17 and a AFROTC scholarship recipient and I had to take this test twice. First time I failed because I was not prepared for the sit ups, but after literally 8 days of PT I was able to pass with a 98. Her advice is good. If you really want to excel you need to run 1.5 mi at least 3 times a week as if it’s the real test and really push yourself, the rest of the time you can walk or jog or bike. Do 20 push-ups and sit-ups when you wake up and before you go to sleep, and every other day or everyday if you want you can push to your max in a mock 1 minute test... also drink lots of water and Gatorade before testing it makes a difference. You can also put liniment on your chest and joints.

Back in my day, after reporting to my permanent duty station, I had to cover a 1.5 mile distance in less than 18 minutes once a year. That was too easy. You could almost walk it and still pass. I set a personal goal of doing the 1.5 miles in less than 10 minutes. It took me several months of trying, but I was able to do it. I had to experiment with different strategies. Do I run fast at the beginning or save my energy for a sprint at the end. That was 40 years ago. I know my ticker would not be willing to do that today.

Did AFROTC a couple years back. We did the PT test twice a semester if I recall correctly. I'd get around a 95 every time and I was pretty average physically. The hardest part is definitely the running. It took about 9 minutes to run the 1.5 mile. We had one guy in our wing who could run the 1.5 literally in 7 minutes. He was pretty much able to sprint the whole thing, I have no idea how he did that. The Air Force had it pretty easy at least compared the Marine guys, they have to run 3 miles. On top of that, they frequently did ruck marches around campus super early in the morning way before we even started our PT, and we did PT at 6:00am 3 times a week. I love the Air Force tho. Although I was impressed with how much rougher and tougher the Marine and Army cadets seemed I really didn't care. I was so proud to be an Airman. I only lasted one semester, I got dropped from the program because I have tattoos on my fingers and neck...😞

Instead of trying to run a set amount of time without stopping try running a certain distance without stopping. You can go slower than your time on your mile and a half but run the whole way and that will still help you improve. I started off not being able to do a mile and a half without stopping but after a month I was able to do it. My score went from 16 minutes to 14 minutes instantly. In my opinion my score still sucks but I know I am improving

Hey, how do you improve on your 1.5 mile run? I find it ridiculous that airmen have to run 1.5 miles. Why not just a one mile run? For men, we have to run 1.5 mile in 14 minutes which is not do-able for me. I have been training myself for one month, and still get tired, very winded before I hot the one mile mark. After one mile, I get really really tired and panting and very dizzy. How did you improve on your situps? I hate situps. I always get muscle cramps, severe pain, after I do 30 situps. The minimum sit ups I have to do as a male in my age bracket is 42. I guess i will not be able to pass tfott. Shit. 😥😥😥😡😡😡

Also I’m 174 pounds and 5’11 which might make it harder to run? Idk but I broke my foot back in October and I aint in shape. I got plenty of time tho. Ik I can do the sit ups. Got plenty of time to get stronger.

LOL I don't miss this at all. Good to be out, but fun to watch the struggle. Back in 2003-05 we just sat on a bike, I started the machine, rode a certain amount, and then did push-ups and situps, it was easiest PT test ever lol.

I'm in England. But training is nearly similar. So for Americans who want military career first thing to do GET FIT. Do 2mile run daily. Do 20 press ups daily do 20 to 50 situps. I was in TA for few weeks. Believe me get fit.

Yes of course. As your arms are costed on your chest/shoulder/clavicle are - *They Need to *stay that way *entire time; your elbows are on your body - they have to stay there / you cannot pull them up and away from your body.

I’m planning on joining the Air Force after highschool but for the PT test I’d like to test myself on standards of men because tbh I think women should do the same as men I guess. I hope no one judges me on that.I freakin suck at pushups though, I rlly need to practice.
@EloraJean
@EloraJean 6 лет назад
I totally get that, I feel similar. I get maybe our bodies are different and what not but shouldn't there be consistency in the military for fitness standards? Idunno. I'm guessing people who make more money than I do already had this conversation and figured it out lol

They're definitely doable. The minimum push ups for guys is 33, and then sit ups is 58, so at least strength wise, it's pretty easy to hit them if you practice constantly. Run wise though, in order to pass, you would need less than a 12:25 (if I remember correctly) for a person younger than 30, so that's where most girls will struggle to meet boy standards. But they are definitely attainable. I can tell you I honestly hit the minimum push ups and sit ups for guys (and go above them), the only one I can't always make is the run; but that's just cause I am naturally a distance runner and not a fast one. Kudos on you for already planning to go above what would be expected of you ! :D

Natalia Vazquez I’m sure the minimum for guys is like in the low 40’s for sit ups..

Tbh operational, most people who don’t have squadron pt just start running for their test like a week or two out, it’s really not that hard for most. Don’t stress about it just worry about being good at your job, it’s not the pt tests, it’s not basic, nor tech school. You join for a reason, truth is that reason doesn’t matter, in the end we all wear the same uniform. Work hard even if you hate what you do and the airforce won’t be so bad. Don’t worry about the little bumps in the road, think about getting btz even as an AB or AMN bc you have all the time to get good bullets and also learn your job.

For a really long time I’ve been thinking about joining the Air Force, like since 8th grade, and I did a semester of JROTC in my freshman year of high school but decided to quit it and said to myself I would never join, but my feelings have changed a lot since then after seeing first hand what it does to someone (my boyfriend is in the marines, his brother, and best friend friend from childhood) and seeing a lot of the positive changes. But there’s some negatives I’ve seen as well like being away from the family and dealing with the intense dress codes how to eat, talk, etc. it’s all been really on my mind and I’ve been seriously considering joining, but I’m definitely for sure on the fence about it! I suffer from pretty bad migraines that I get twice a year, which isn’t too bad since my episode history was a lot more frequent in the past, but I believe I’m growing out of it. I only get them when I’m under severe stress which is what is really making me reconsider those feelings of joining. I guess I’m making this comment to see if any of you guys think? I don’t want to lie about the migraines at meps and then go into boot camp and get a bad migraine (every migraine I’ve ever gotten makes me go blind in my left eye) that causes me to throw up and pass out (I’ve passed out from the pain before also) not sure what to do or think :) any thoughts would be appreciated

i did 33 push ups and 50 sit ups and i haven't exorcised much in the last 10 years. 12 more pushups and a jog pace of 7.6mph and im good for liberator. with moderate training i could probably pass thunderbolt. i got a guy recommending i join and im seeing how I'd stack up. i'm considering it but having to drop my life for 4-8 years sounds crazy.

You're slacking off, and not running as often as you need to. If you run 2 miles a day, three days per week, you will do much better during the PT test. You need to do push ups more often, during the week, so that you can perform better during PT test. The base gym has plenty of Weight Machines that you can use, to become stronger at push ups. Push yourself.

I was still in Basic when Lackland had their annual "5K Fun Run" in '99. We got voluntold to participate, but that was about that time when the old morning soreness was the worst 'cause we were still building our stamina. The upside was we didn't have to run around in the dark on the same track/pad, meaning you could see a bunch of places on base you wouldn't normally see. The downside was, well, we had a bunch of real runners and they set the pace. After hitting my third kilometer in a faster-than-normal pace I began to think, "What have I gotten myself into? If I start speed walking at the 4 km mark, will I get recycled? Does a Fun Run count towards my PT evals?"
