I didn't know Mike Shannon died. To listen to "Live at Shannon's" after a Cardinals game on KMOX was as good a baseball education as you could get. Absolute Cardinal Legend.

My great-grandfather covered MLB in St. Louis from 1963 to 1968 and in New York/Philadelphia from 1968 to 1979 for Western Union. As the district manager, he would have to go to every game in case the phones went dead and he’d have to send wire reports to the Associated Press to relay accounts of the game. It was a job he truly enjoyed. Thankfully, the phones never went down and he got to watch some of the greatest players to ever take the field. He would tell me stories about Stan Musial, Lou Brock, Bob Gibson, Reggie Jackson, Tom Seaver, so many legendary names. For a very quiet man, he was an excellent orator when it came to baseball and football. We always joked that he missed his calling as a color commentator. One calling he did not miss was being the best great grandfather a young boy could ask for. A lot of my love of sports is directly related to spending weekends with him watching games, learning the history, and picking his brain for fun stories. A lot of the players in this video are players he told me about. Heaven sure could field a team these days. Ned is there too, covering the games. Godspeed to all these baseball greats.

I watched a number of these men play when I was a young fan rooting for the Cincinnati Reds. Don Gullet was a great pitcher who had a number of injuries over his career. He went 15-4 with a 2.42 era in 1975 despite missing two months with a broken thumb. Bill Plummer also played for the Reds as a backup to the great Johnny Bench. Plummer was a dependable player who once got 3 hits in a game against the St. Louis Cardinals in 1976. I saw or heard so many of these men play against the Reds that I feel like they were part of my family. Thanks for posting this nicely done video.

Did not know the Buddy Harrelson, Frank Howard, and Dacmve Gullet died. Roger Craig also. The others I never heard of them. Frank Howard hit one in the old Yankees Stadium in the left field 3rd deck. It was estimated to have traveled over 500 feet. The only other man to do it was Mickey Mantle.

@AMEER-wp2mm I agree with you. On a local station where I live, a sports show said starting pitchers now pitch an average of 5 innings. Koufax, Ford, Gibson, Seaver and many other pitchers of the past completed a 9 inning game. I have not watched baseball for 20 years.

@@roncaruso931 And notice how ZERO player or any baseball person at all of now or who is still alive from the past says anything against the absolute ridiculousness of many alterations that have ruined the game... in the supposed purpose of "improving"what was the perfect game for 150 years... Is that possible? That know one at all would oppose? ..unless they KNOW that they dare not speak against it because to do so would be to oppose the fearful power that is behind the corruption of everything.

@AMEER-wp2mm I wish I were back in the old Yankee Stadium. Watching Mantle and Maris. Back then, they let you into the stadium for batting practice. The players these days are all big gorillas. Steroods and weights. It all started with Bonds, McGuire, and Sosa. I remember when the players were all different sizes. Some were skinny, some were muscular. Some tall and some short. The game is ruined now. I never watch a single half inning.

I am not interested in doing a video like that. Go read the articles from the 1920's saying baseball is dead because it is no longer about skill but rather about hitting bombs and how Babe Ruth ruined the sport. Every year since the 1880s, there have been people declaring the death of the sport I love. If you want to be pessimistic, go ahead. I choose to celebrate. Be well.
