In Memory of Franco Corelli on the 10th Anniversary of his Death 

Corelli was the greatest tenor and the most exciting singer. He is simply incomparable to the rest of them. He can never be forgotten. He was and is so much loved since he has given so many people so much with his immortal noble art.

It wasnt until 2015 that I listened to Franco, well better late than never. But now I listen to him all the time trying to make up for it.

What a voice, My daughter a young one to remember, considers him the greatest, It makes me proud, because it means that age is no limit to recognize grandeur.

If this is the Sat. matinee broadcast, I was in this perf when I was a member of the boys chorus at the Old Met. Corelli was wonderful, but so was Eileen Farrell who's bellowing away with Corelli to the extent that she drowns him out a couple of times. That said, Gioconda is an opera with lots of drowning out. It's hard to get 6 singers in top form with comparable bellowing capabilities. This used to be commonplace, but is not so much anymore. The boys were mostly in Act I but I used to hang around to watch from the side of the stage. No one bothered me and I learned a lot of operas that way. You can get a sense of how loud music was at the Old Met. The auditorium was half the cubic size of the New Met.

My voice teacher sang with him quite a few times and was invited to a concert to do to sing with him he knew him very well and was good friends with him he said and he says it will never be another one I think he's right

I see it was the broadcast. The cast is: Eileen Farrell, Franco Corelli, Nell Rankin, Robert Merrill, Giorgio Tozzi, Mignon Dunn. Conductor: Fausto Cleva. I just remembered that the boys are in the fishing chorus in Act II. I was the 4th boy stage right of Merrill. He was wonderful!

What a wonderful recording.. now imagine his voice on the 52 Gioconda with Callas.. if only he was descovered earlier 🥀 they both gave us such amazing splendid recordings, such pity they didn’t record more...
