Never knew how much a theater show percussionist has to actually do during a show. So many groups of instruments to be in charge of as well as play at the right moment. Are you in the pit along with the conductor or do you have monitors ? I play drums and percussion as well. Thank you for sharing what you do, I've always been curious about this as a job. Damn, bro. We were gonna do Into the Woods at my school, and I was gonna do percussion. Then they decided that Into the Woods was too cool for us, so we switched to Xanadu, and cut the pit down to four people. I play kit, too, so I was like... "Can I play pit?" They told me no, that they needed someone experienced (I've been playing for years) and that they were just gonna hire pros. More than half the cast has dropped out. It's gonna be a real shitty musical, but their pit is gonna sound great. I wish them luck.

Wow. I’m really not sure if you are a Latin percussionist by trade or if this was a rare thing for you, but your mastery of some of the fundamentals is so incredible. The way you took the 3/2 son clave groove from the claves to the congas was flawless. Your timbale technique is great, too. I grew up listening to my Papi play, and he spent many years playing with Señor Puente. Watching this video brought back many fond memories. Bravo, sir.

There were a few notes that were so high that the trumpets didn't even try to go for them. One that stood out to me was at the end of the "You must take the A train" segment. They played an F, the actual note is Ab. I could be wrong though, I play flute, not trumpet, but I have a close friend who's playing trumpet in our ITH Pit Orchestra. I honestly hear how these trumpets did on the first note of The Club. That note's nearly impossible.

Fantastic video! Love the percussion in this show when I first saw it in London! I have question if you don't me asking. How are these setups usually mic'd up? for example using the shakers, I don't visibly see a microphone nearby
@JoeMartone
@JoeMartone 7 лет назад
London Lad thank you for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed it. As for the mics, it really depends on how the theater wants to do it. It's hard to see them because of the angle of the camera, but there's a mic over the bongos and another by the trap table. Basically one over every area of the set up, so when you see me play I'm playing towards a mic. I hope that answers your question.

The triangle is a 4” Alan Abel triangle. And the machine it’s on is called a miller machine.

Wow! Great work! Just 2 quick questions! During a performance like this does any improvisation take place? Or must everything be done according to the sheet music? And how do you know what instruments to use at certain points in the song? Is it said in the sheet music?
@JoeMartone
@JoeMartone 6 лет назад
For this show there is a lot of improve when it says "SOLO". Other than that it's just patterns to play. Little inflections here and there. As for the instruments, all of that is written down.
