In the Spirit of Terry Fox - American Dad and Daughter Look at Rick Hansen's Man in Motion Tour 

Rick married his physiotherapist who took care of him each evening massaging his arms and back. They are still married. I remember he said that they wouldn't marry unless/until he could walk down the aisle. He did walk down the aisle aided by crutches. He's truly one of our country's national treasures and such an inspiration.

I remember when he came through our town. I was in junior high,so about 13, and we all went out to watch him pass. I thought at the time that it was a waste as we stood outside for almost an hour, and he was gone in 10 minutes. I never thought the message was a waste. In fact, i was very excited to see him. Now i know about scheduling, but i was frustrated. Skip ahead 12 years, and I broke my back skiing. Because of technology and processes developed from funds and research through the Rick Hansen foundation, I was treated. Now, 35 years after seeing him roll through, I can go for walks with my children. I always wanted to thank him. Great video.

I knew you'd cover our “Man in Motion” Rick Hansen, so glad Layla joined you again! If you watch the Canadian version of the St. Elmo's fire hit song, Rick features. David Foster was writing music for the movie soundtrack when he hit Hollywood. Foster brought the music to British musician John Parr along with clips of Rick and that’s how the song's lyrics were inspired 😊 you never disappoint to uplift and remind us of goodness!

I was at a dinner for The Prince & Princess of Wales (Charles & Diana) during Expo 86. I was seated next to Patrick Reid who was an Expo ambassador at the time. His daughter was on the Man in Motion tour as a physiotherapist. (She ended up marrying Rick Hansen.) Mr. Reid was so proud of what they were all doing. All of Canada was proud. BC was especially proud to call them native sons.

I am from Vancouver. I was at the gathering when Rick left on his Man in Motion tour at Oakridge mall in S. Van. There were not many people there, but it was an inspiring afternoon as we watched him roll away & begin this epic, what seemed impossible feat. The plan was to be finished during ‘Expo ‘86’ in Vancouver - May-Sept. Expo’s theme was transportation… perfect ! The commissioner of Expo ‘86 was Patrick Reid, his daughter is the physiotherapist on Rick’s tour - that Rick married (can’t make this stuff up 😉) Rick couldn’t finish then, but finished the following year. I was there at the HUGE celebration 🎉 to welcome him back - it was amazing. Rick, Terry, Michael J. Fox - all from Vancouver. (As is of course Michael Buble, Ryan Reynolds, Seth Rogan & so many more ..) Rick & Terry knew each other from their days of rehab @ GFStrong. Rick had been a wheelchair athlete, winning multiple gold/silver medals b4 his tour. Another interesting tidbit - he had very little money to begin the tour. They had enough money to get them to SanFrancisco & they winged it, hoping to inspire along the way … this is PURE Law of attraction/ vibration - beautiful manifesting of a vision that is pure & high in integrity …. And yes, David Foster (from Victoria, BC) wrote Man in Motion song for St. Elmo’s Fire movie Thanks John, this is also bringing back incredibly beautiful memories of our 5 mo. World expo in Vancouver 1986 and I was moved to tears watching the video - recalling this amazing time & his incredible POSITIVE attitude & determination.

His foundation has obviously accomplished a lot, and the research and advocacy continues. Thanks, also, for sharing your lovely daughter's reaction. She's so thoughtful and intelligent, and including her reminds me that our kids are ready and able to handle discussions about the world around us, often much earlier than we give them credit for! My father drove a logging truck and he so impressed with Rick when he followed him up a steep, long winding highway. Dad said he kept a steady pace and never stopped or slowed.

13:10 the Terry Fox Memorial just outside Thunder Bay located exactly where he took his last step. He is looking down the road towards Thunder Bay and beyond. To be there is very emotional. It couldn't have been better sculpted or placed. It is an honour to see Terry and Rick at the same place.

I am a person with a congenital disability and of course, this is being exacerbated as I age. The university I work at in the Greater Vancouver area is implementing (slowly) recommendations by the Rick Hansen Foundation’s Accessibility arm right now. He has made an enormous difference to physical spaces being accessible to everyone beyond curb cuts and ramps, they even look at the height of light switches and drinking fountains, bathroom stall size and shape, width of doors, and much more. I am hopeful that new generations will not have to deal with what I did, and my disability is mild, so my experience was less terrible than that of many others. I was told by a woman in a wheelchair that she did not call herself disabled, but rather, differently abled. I like that. Good for you raising awareness with your children. That is where it starts. 🥰

That is the Peace Arch in BC. I remember I shook Rick Hansen's hand when I was in Grade 3 and he came through our town on the Man in Motion Tour. Our entire school went to see him. It was a really big deal at the time. His hand was so massive and so strong...

Where he crossed into the us is the western most border crossing between Canada and the US. The arch is near the crossing at surrey bc and Blaine Washington. The arch is to signify the signing of the treaty of Ghent which has immortalized our country’s friendship. The archway is actually a symbolic gateway between the two countries and has actual gates. Inscribed above the gates is “may these gates never be closed”

I saw Rick Hanson at YVR about 4 years ago. He's a physically big man. Built like a linebacker. Those of us in the security lineup began applauding as he rolled by.

Rick Hansen is a national treasure. Humble and determined. He became a paraplegic when he was about 15 following a car accident. In the video at the opening of the Blusson centre there is an older gentleman in a wheelchair entering….that is Sam Sullivan who was the mayor of Vancouver at one time. Access is so important…we forget as able bodied people that simple things are not possible all the time. Love your relationship with you daughter….so special.

Rick Hansen's Man in Motion Tour ended in Vancouver the same day as my high school graduation dinner/dance (sort of like prom). School was let out so we could join the crowds cheering him on...and then all of us girls went off to get our hair done. haha Really, though, it was an incredible thing to witness. The streets were packed with people cheering him on after a job so well done - and he was only about 30 blocks from finishing when he passed us. It was uphill the rest of the way and I remember thinking of how hard he had to push to get up the street - and immediately realizing this is nothing compared to what he had already done. And he was home. It was very special.

Not only is it inspiring to celebrate great Canadian trailblazers, it's so inspiring to hear Layla's thoughts and feelings. Your strong parenting skills are in the forefront every time your precious little girl gives her thoughts, opinions and just watching you teach her new words, new thoughts and to see her immediately understand and then speak on those things is a joy to see. She is the future and i can so see her doing great things. Hell, she's already done amazing things - my daughter too shaved her head for cancer research and was a strong advicate for inclusivity for LGBTQ+ rights in her school - never was I more proud of her (and that's not an easy fight in Texas) Keep up the good work!!! PS - do you have a PO box? I'd love to send you some Canadian treats that I'm pretty sure you and your family will enjoy (I know the 20 years I spent in TX the care packages my mom would send us were eagerly anticipated by my entire family) Loving you and your channel so much

They closed our restaurant so that we could see him come through Abbotsford. I've never forgotten that day. I grew up with the Peace Arch. You were right it's between Washington State and British Columbia.

I am grateful to say on one of my lunch breaks in downtown Vancouver, B.C just outside the Skyrain terminal/Canadian Pacific old Train Station I saw a man walking with crutches who resembled Rick"s face. I called out excuse me are you Rick Hanson? He replied, "YES."....I happily had this opportunity to meet him one on one!....rather than Midst the many crowds of fans surrounding him. What an honour to meet you here today and to congratulate on your successful yet challenging trip throughout many continents on planet Earth. Blessings for your future endeavors too! That was a great reaction, Your daughter is so lovely and it's so great to see you include her in these reactions and educating her on these special people and events. Rick like Terry is another great inspiration to all of us Canadians. I was so happy that I got to cheer on Rick when he came through my province of Nova Scotia and through my city of Halifax, it was an amazing turn out and so special to see him. My good friend got a spinal injury when he was 24 when he had a ski accident. It was so devastating but he has preserved and got into sailing and competed in the Summer Paralympics and won three medals 2 bronze and a gold and even a gold in the world championship against able bodied sailors. A few months ago he was inducted into our provinces sports hall of Fame, so proud and such an inspiration as well. 👍

Something on a more funny side: look for RMR (Rick Mercer Report)with Rick Hansen if you want to see him try wheelchair bungee--it's a comedy show, but Hansen did it in his quest to always push himself to the limits. He's a funny guy as well. On a side note, bcs I know you like us--you can also watch from the same guy (RMR)--how Canada works. Good laugh. And glad to see your partner back. You're a good dad to show these videos to your daughter (maybe another future friend of canadians, as you are. Hasve a nice day & see you another time. And yes, the peace arch is in BC.

I remember event and man so well. Rick Hansen passed through my hometown on the afternoon of Hallowe'en when I was just 10. My grandmother was with my brother, cousin and myself standing on the side of the road. My father was riding in one of the support trucks collecting donations in a big pail along with others from his service club. I remember trying to run up to the truck to put in my donation...I couldn't believe how fast they were moving...also, running was difficult in my Hallowe'en costume (I was wearing cowgirl boots for the first time.)

He travelled on the road in front our high-school and we all came out and were all cheering. Love him!

In grade 3 my school watched Ric Hansen go down Austin ave in Coquitlam BC, I remember it like it was yesterday! Great guy, I've met him several times since.

I was surprised to see Michael J Fox in this video at 7:26. Another Canadian who did so much for his own illness later on in life (Parkinson disease), which raised a lot of money, and enabled him to start the Michael J Fox Parkinson Foundation.

The border arch is officially called the Peace Arch. It's the border crossing when you cross on the trip from Vancouver to Seattle, it's almost on the coast.

John you and Layla should also watch and listen to the Man in Motion song by John Parr. It follows Rick on his tour and only lasts the time of the song. It is very moving and uplifting.

When Michael J. Fox was born in 1961, his parents named him Michael Andrew Fox. As a result, when the beloved actor was in school, he went by the name Michael Fox. However, when the future star decided to become an actor, he learned there was a problem because there was another actor who was credited under the name Michael Fox. He changed his middle name to just the letter J because using the A for Andrew sounded too much like EH the Canadian slang word. LOL

Love your series so much. If you want some humorous pokes to America there is nothing that tops Rick Mercer’s “Talking to Americans “. Rick is a top Canadian comedian that has disappeared for the most part the last few years to write a book & pursue other avenues for his many interests. He was on a weekly show called “This Hour Has 22 Minutes” that is some of the best comedy in Canada. I’ll send other links in future to some of the hilarious show skits. You may have to google why some of these “Talking to Americans” skits are so funny, example is the petition to stop seal hunting in Saskatchewan - no seals there is the landlocked prairie province. The funniest bits are that when he gets US politicians to sign petitions or comment about his topics. Rick kept Canadian politics hilarious & made fun of the most ridiculous ideas they had so we Canucks could participate in some of his suggestions, like having a member of parliament change his name to Doris Day. Michael J Fox added the middle initial to his stage name because there was already an actor named Michael Fox.

You make the classiest videos which I'd like to thank you for! I got to see Rick wheel through my hometown with my entire school in tow. It was a large gathering and we cheered so loud for him. I'll never forget the Man in Motion. The entire city seemed to be there for him. His accomplishments were/are legendary!

I had the honour of meeting him a couple of years after the tour had ended and it was one of the most exciting moments of my life! BTW, that border crossing you were referring to is called the Peace Arch and it is the border between British Columbia and Washington - specifically the cities of Surrey, BC and Blaine, Washington.

He had his accident in Williams lake B.C. I grew up in that town. When returned he got a heroes welcome. The stampede grounds, hwy 97 were filled with people

There are 6.2 million Canadians with some form of disability; as one of them, I benefit from the changes brought about. The Tour raised 26 million. Started at our Alma mater, the University of British Columbia. His father in law, Patrick Reid, was a commissioner for our Expo 86 World Fair which was transportation themed. I like how you have Layla there and explain things to her. She is another shining spirit so keep up the good work. (ignore the naysayers! They can go watch elsewhere) The Peace Arch is featured in Tom Brokaw's video introducing Americans to Canada for the 2010 Winter Olympics. Both the Wirkd Fair and the Olympics were quite the parties.

When your explaining Rick Hansen’s goal of working together, I was hoping that you have used the example of the MRna vaccine for Covid. Labs from Canada, and European countries all assisted in developing it so quickly. The emergency made scientists/ countries co operate, instead of competing and hiding progress. Imagine what could be accomplished in medical science if this approach was used for other things! I tear up every time I hear Terry’s name. He was a remarkable person! I was a little younger than her when I remember seeing them, and the 1 minute run times works perfectly for children's attention. Honestly made for kids, because of how easily they absorb information. Thanks for the video, I half knew this story but time made me forget he was Canadian. Made me think of a local celeb from where I grew up who was on the gold medal sledge hockey team. Which is in all honesty a pretty awesome version of hockey.

I think that arch was the Peace Arch to commemorate Canada and United Stated friendship. In China they used to hide handicapped people but after Rick Hansen went there they don't do that anymore. He went to more countries than what is shown. He and Terry Fox were good friends. David Foster wrote a song about him. Thank you.

Have you ever touched on the "Oak Island Money Pit" in Nova Scotia? How true it is depends on who you ask.
