I was in grade 5 when Terry Fox ran through Parry Sound, Ontario. The schools were closed that day so we could watch him pass. I remember my mother giving me $5 to put in to the donation cans they carried with him, and him smiling at me as he went by. This has impacted my adult life. Everyone needs heroes.
Give it at least 500 years: By then Terry Fox will have become a mythological hero to the region of Canada akin to Theseus in Athens or Herakles in Sparta.
I’m a Mexican kid from California who was born in 1976 and I grew up knowing about Terry Fox. My dad who was a runner and someone who was born and raised in Mexico and didn’t speak English and had limited understanding of English told me about this guy named Terry Fox. He said he was the most inspirational persons he ever heard about. My father used to tell me when he didn’t want to running he’d think of terry and it made him go running. Terry is a true hero from Canada all the way down to here in California and even further in Mexico. Love you Terry. You will never be forgotten. PS Terry: we are overcoming this cancer battle.
I am a 61-year-old man and still cry every time I see or read about Terry. Now either I'm one foolish old man or Terry sure did capture my heart and soul with what he did!
Terry Fox is my hero. When I first heard about him I was in Grade 1 and thought of him as this older man. Now, more than twice his age, I can't believe he was only 18 when he put his plan together to run across Canada and raise funds for the faces he couldn't forget.
My grandmother is buried right next to him. When I pay my respects I always stop and look at his headstone. Very understated, probably the way he would have wanted it. A real hero for sure.
No matter where you are in Canada, no matter what language you speak, no matter what your political views might be, this is someone we can all be proud of!!
I teach 10th grade World History in an affluent area of Orange County CA. I show the 30 for 30 Episode "Into the Wind" every year. I feel it's very important to show my students how lucky and blessed they are and for them to see what true hero looks like.
It is very heartwarming to know that Terry is not only a monumental "Canadian Hero" but one which is recognized world wide as the charity run in his name is run in many countries around the world. Thank you dearly for honoring his memory in your class, very decent and noble of you, he was a hero of mine all my life. last August I lost my father to cancer, taking part in Terry's run for cancer this weekend will have a whole new meaning for me.
i just cried infront of my computer watching this video when his mom told the story about the christmas presents in 1980.. oh my god, what a guy. today i gain some faith in humanity back
He seemed so much older when I was a little kid, but knowing that he was even younger than I am now (23). I can't even put into words how amazing he is. He did this at 21??? A great Canadian!
i love this man. whenever im down or feel hopeless...I look to him. he always reminds me that we can do so much more as humans...and makes me so incredibly proud to be a canadian. we as canadians come from a long line of explorers, pioneers and hockey players - we can do anything.
Este joven fue un gran ejemplo para el mundo. Lo admiro mucho. Fue un gran ejemplo de tenacidad, de inspiración y de amor a los demás. Saludos para todo el pueblo canadiense que fue donde nació este gran joven.
thanks to Steve Nash for keeping Terry's memory alive with the younger people.. for us of Terry's age we will always remember that spirit and determination.. can't think of a bigger hero in my lifetime...
Thank you for posting this and thank you to ESPN for making it. Terry Fox is the greatest Canadian that ever lived. I cried the day he died and his memory still makes me cry today.
I'm new to Vancouver, but I felt such awe for what this young man was able to accomplish. He is an incredible human being, inspiration and personal hero. We should all strive for that pure inner strength and integrity Terry had.
As the sayings goes from one of my fav movies "The Sandlot" : "Heroes get remembered, but legends never die" Terry was both. And so much more, words cant describe. As an American I salute you with honors Terry.
His is probably the purest canadian story we will ever see, we will never forget him, in my opinion his story is a national treasure. Terry fox is evidence that god not only gifts individuals but entire nations too, god bless him and all those who have and are suffering From cancer.
I was six years and living in Ontario when Terry began his run home. His actions not only moved me as a child, but help mold me into the man I am today. A Canadian hero is almost an understatement of what he is. Thank you Terry for teaching the world to simply, never give up and fight for what you believe in. I know I am forever grateful.
My Dad met Terry Fox on his Marathon of Hope when Terry came through our home town of Petitcodiac,NB.My Dad organised a reception for Terry on behalf of the Canadian Cancer Society and had him over at the house.Years later,I met Terry's parents,Betty and Rollie in Toronto when they retraced Terry's run.Terry was and always will be one of Canada's greatest heroes, one who's memory will never fade...."Somewhere,the hurting must stop." (Terry Fox 1958-1981)
Hi Ron! My name is Cami, and I'm a reporter with CTV Atlantic. I'd love to talk to you about your family's connection to Terry! Would it be alright if I could ask you a few questions? You can reach me at Cami.Kepke@Bellmedia.ca !
Trust me after seeing it tonight on ESPN I will NEVER forget about him...there are some ppl in this world who are just special and Terry Fox truly was one of them. In-cre-di-ble.
Wow. Terry Fox was and still is an inspiration to all who know his story. I will forever remember what he has done for not only cancer research, but in showing love to others he did not even know. Thank you, Terry!
Terry Fox will always be one my personal heroes. Even more so after watching this video! I'm well proud that I'm able to take part in the Terry Fox runs here (3rd year in a row!) and help spread the word! It's 2012, it's time we beat cancer's bloody bum! R.I.P. Terry Fox! Had you in mind today!
As sad as it is in terms of the cause he was fighting for, dying when and how he did was the best that could have happened for it. In the middle of the run so that in a way the marathon of hope is never over, and we are finishing it for him each year
I survived cancer almost 10 years ago, and I believe that it was partly because of Terry Fox. But more than that, Terry was able to do what only a small few can: he inspired us. I wonder if we will ever see the likes of him again.
I was 7 years old when this happened I still remember it......still brings tears to my eyes .... I aso remember when Steve Fonyo finished the run .......I respect both men but I definitely think the run was different thru Terry's eyes....I will never forget....
This is an excellent video about an amazing man. Terry Fox is an inspiration to us all. What a guy! He has my eternal respect and admiration....thank you and God bless you Terry
Many of my fellow Americans recognized Terry from the two posters I drew (gasp!) in 1981 and 1984. I think it's time to draw Terry again, this time with the new technology. My rendition of Terry in a headshot lacks any details, which came off a newspaper picture back in 1981. Now I can draw him with so many details, especially his nice set of freckles. Anyway, I did raise awareness, and I cited You Tube, the CBC broadcast, and my own site. Terry remains my first hero born after me.
I read the comments before I watched the vid. I definetly didnt think I would tear up but then again that was before I watched the vid... We have the olympics on our door step and hero's like this throughout our country. I AM PROUD TO BE CANADIAN!
Awesome guy, running and never stopping. It gives us a lesson no matter what don't let anything stop you from running to what you want and never give up. Though he knew it was inevitable to survive his cancer, he still raised more than what he wanted to. 1 million to 12 million. Pretty awesome leap.
God does this man make me proud! What an inspiration to us all.I remember Terry Fox from an episode of "Real People" in I think 1980.A man I wish I could be more like.May God hold you in his arms Terry!Thank you for everything you did.You still inspire me to this day.
A true Canadian icon. an inspirational and motivator. it goes to show you if one men can do it on one leg and with an illness. imagine what a two legged g healthy person can do.
I was three years old at the time and remember him well. A true Canadian hero. Too bad there aren't more Terry Fox's in the world. It would be a better place if there was. Gone but never forgotten.
He was a super human . Having cancer myself and watching this make me so proud of him and how strong he was . This day today he would have been 60 years old. A man to look up to is an understatement. He died way to young ... How I hate cancer . My hero he will ever be. Thanks for all of your strength and determination Terry Fox. Truly an Inspiration to Canada and the world.
Really inspired for Terry fox story. I have changed in life to watch Terry fox life. He is a very strong person. Salute to Terry fox. Everyone one to watch fox story.
when i watched this video i acually cried my eyes out its just so sad that he had to die at such young age and hes such a great person he deserves to be remembered for ever!
