I have an in-tray assessment on Thursday and this has been by far the most helpful piece I have found so far. The 'matrix' you talk about is perfect! Thanks!

Thanks for posting this video Mike. It was extremely helpful. I am in a bit of a pickle here. I am looking for HR Advisor position but have never worked in one. I get through the face 2 face bit but when it comes to in-tray exercises, I don't break through. The only way I member dealing with such questions is from my Uni/degree days where we were taught to state the law, policy and procedure of the employer and the best practice. But looks like it is not working. I am obviously doing something wrong. Would you be so kind enough to show some examples as to how to attempt the HR Advisor In-Tray exercises. Any help or tips would be much appreciated. Thanks!!

I am preparing for a Ford graduate assessment center and your video has really helped me understand how in tray exercises work. I can now apply what I've learned in the video when solving the exercise. Thank you so much! Very structured and very well explained. Consider running workshops at graduate careers fairs if you haven't already. I will definitely put my name on the list :D Thank you again.

Hi Mike, thank you for making this video. I would like to know what I would need to do for a written tests and what is the purpose of this test? Why would companies have 2 interviews (one general) and one written test? It's not for an assessment centre! Thank you :)

So I had an assessment day yesterday which included an in tray exercise and after reading the scenario, I felt quite confident about it as I had been watching your videos. Scenario was that I had been off work and had come back to a pile of work that had been left for me. 2 tasks were tasks that were directly for me to do and another was for me and someone else to complete and the last one was a colleague who had to urgently print out reports for a meeting she had. So like you said in your video, I put down that I would do the 2 tasks aimed at me directly first and then the one me and somebody else had to do and left the one for my colleague last. I had my feedback today and I was unsuccessful in gaining an interview because I scored poorly on the in tray exercise so I am really confused!!

+Kay94 It's hard to make an assessment based just on your comments. I'd have to know more about the assessment criteria and the role itself... But the fundamental elements of this technique, the principals themselves, can be applied in any setting. They work. Maybe there were specific competencies that were being assessed and you didn't score high enough in those areas? Sorry, I'd like to be more helpful, but it's hard to offer advice without knowing all the facts! :)

Hi did you by chance ask them back for a feedback? Maybe they might have been able to feed you in on where it went wrong
@telodijoperez
@telodijoperez 3 года назад
It is normal... teamwork fails! you started with your tasks and left the urgent one (your colleague) for the last, You should contact your colleague first and then proceed with your tasks. In that way both would have done the tasks at the same time. You forgot your colleague!

Read Stephen Covey 7 habits of highly effective people. That is where this matrix comes from. The presenter actually mentioned that in the video. It is very well known and I’m sure there are RU-vid videos and web pages that summarize it.
