Incorrupt or Not has been the question the last week as many have made the journey to Missouri to see Sister Wilhelmina and to decide if they believe she is incorruptible. Kari the Mortician poses several questions about the situation that we do not have answers to. Mummification and ideal conditions seems the logical answer but we need a but more info…
What do you think...is she or isn't she incorrupt?!

My very best friend in the world is a nun and I can promise you that the sisters will not be lying for any financial gain, these ladies give up their whole lives for the love of God and the good of others, they are truly wonderful, Why in this time of the world not caring for others and all the corrupt people who only care about money and power can’t we just believe that this beautiful person is blessed by God ?

@@KaritheMorticiani think incorrupt means that the body decompose very slowly defying the natural law... im not sure if the body is retouched but if it is then im sure that the sole reason for doing so is to make it presentable for public display... retouched has been done for other incorruptibles for this reason...

@@KaritheMortician, Thank you for the respectful & honest way with which you put forth your well thought out questions. I just saw a video in which the current Abbess of the monastery stated that a thin wax mask was created to make Sr. Wilhemina more presentable. Apparently one of her eyes had been damaged because part of the coffin's lid had collapsed & damp soil had fallen onto the face over the years rendering that rye socket a little unsightly. I am an Orthodox Christian, so I am familiar with such claims regarding incorruption. We differ from Roman Catholics in that we don't do any "touching up" with wax, or use of funerary masks. In our church tradition, a special cloth called an "Aer" covers the face, leaving only the "incorrupt" hands & feet exposed. When the body is exhumed & found still intact, it is usually just dusted off, carefully cleaned with rose water, & re "vested" with fresh clothes or clerical vestments. Usually the bodies are dark & appear desiccated.

@@KaritheMorticianIf I am not mistaken, the funeral home that takes care of the deceased religious of this convent has confirmed that she was bathed and dressed and other hygenic precautions taken for the funeral but she was not embalmed. ( Cloistered monks and nuns are not), Even if she had been, 4 years underground in a cheap pine coffin that was cracked would naturally have produced results quite different from what we see here. The Catholic process of enquiry is really quite thorough. Years and years after any "grand claim" is made, debate may still ensue until every possible venue of information is evaluated and verified to the best of human ability. There may be no pronouncement on the case for 20 or 30 years, until every method of enquiry is exhausted.

@@jeffreyalilin7314the face and hands of St. Bernardette of Lourdes are covered by a wax mask and gloves made by Pierre Imans and Co. in Paris in 1925. They were made from a photograph taken in life. This happened after her skin began to darken after being exposed to the light. God has His reasons for doing things. Many times a miracle isnt meant to last for centuries, sometimes it does, like the blood of the martyr Saint Gennaro in Naples. Sometimes signs and wonders were done by Jesus, and the faith of the weak was strengthened. Most of us recognize that the most important miracle is His Love and Sacrifice made real to His children in the Eucharist.

As a priest of almost 38 years, something like this wouldn’t either make or break my faith in the Risen Lords Jesus, Christ! Some have speculated, that when someone is very Holy, that their entry into heaven is so completely immediate that the glory of heaven galvanizes their mortal remains even as they are being separated from those remains. There have been quite a few incorruptible‘s in the Catholic Church, and in some cases like Saint Clare of Assisi, I believe they tried to preserve the preserved corpse, and then it turned them dark! In my personal opinion, incorruptibles are only a small but significant indicator of the wider body of evidence that there is life after death! To me, the ultimate reality is the apostles blood witness to the resurrection of Christ! And truly, the increasing credibility given to life after death when people are revived ever being considered clinically dead is helpful also. I appreciate the fact that ultimately, you are respectful, and admit that these are questions that need to be squarely addressed. I certainly trust that there are no financial motives for the sisters, revealing this. God bless you, and all of us who strive to know the mysteries of life! I know I found my answer in the Risen Christ!

Wanted to comment on the gravesite. You said that it was dug 2 weeks ago but I read the body was exhumed on the feast of St. Louis de Montfort which was April 28…so closer to 5 weeks ago which is still not very long. HOWEVER I happen to live in Kansas not too far from where this is and we’ve had a lot of rain in very short period of time, including some flash floods so it’s possible that the fresh dirt has washed away and if you look closely at the gravesite you can see water puddles. Also those who say this disturbing or “leave her alone”, please do not be ignorant or disrespectful of our religion. Viewing and moving the bodies of holy people to chapels is part of our 2000 year old tradition especially for those who are saints, so Sister Wilhelmina would have been very aware of this practice and would be honored. Even the bones of the man believed to be St. Peter were moved to be inside of St. Peter’s basilica in Rome.

@@colleennoelle7782 , you're right they didn't try to hide this and it's unfortunate that @Kari the Mortician thinks that they are hiding things from the public or aren't being transparent about what they've done. They also put a thin film of wax on her face, which is what they usually do to further preserve them. Putting wax is not uncommon. They did the same with the faces of Sts. Bernadette and Padre Pio. When the nuns first exhumed St. Bernadette's body and found it to be incorrupt, they didn't know any better and washed it, which resulted in some darkening of the face and hands, and after the 3rd exhumation, they put the wax. I don't think it lessens its wonder.

Hmmm. I’ve been studying human decomposition for over 11 years at this point, and I have some thoughts. I think you hit the nail on the head when you said a lot of “incorruptible” bodies are masks and facades with fabric hiding the more unseemly bits, because I am certain that is the case here. I found other images from before she was more heavily cosmetized, and you can see that her legs and feet in addition to her arms and hands are completely desiccated, her abdomen has dried out with the ribs and pelvis prominently exposed, and the face doesn’t look nearly as full. I also think that there were patches of mold, which is to be expected after four years in the ground. Post-cosmetization, it’s flagrantly obvious that her socks were stuffed, there’s loads of padding under her habit, and the exposed skin looks not only lacquered, but swollen somehow. I hate to rain on someone’s parade and believe me when I tell you I love a weirdly well-preserved corpse just as much as the next decomposition geek, but this seems to be more science than miracle. Taking a cursory look around, there seem to be some clues as to why she mummified instead of taking the more conventional route, so to speak. Starting with the big one, the soil. You had this question in your video, and I’m happy to say I have an answer. The soil in Buchanan/Clinton County, MO, is mostly loam and loess. You can actually see this if you take a closer look at the grave photos. Those two soils, for the uninitiated, are very fine and sandy, well draining, and dry. They’re the stuff that made the dust bowl the dust bowl. You really couldn’t ask for a better soil to preserve remains in, if you’re not counting sand, because both of those will not only drain quickly after rain, but also help to wick away moisture and dehydrate things. Speaking of rainfall, Gower, MO, gets about 27 inches a year. That’s sort of on the low-moderate end of the spectrum. Rain also only tends to fall heavily, like, 4-5 inches in a month, for a couple of months out of the year. With well draining soil and a grave that must’ve been in a particularly dry spot in the cemetery, the body probably wasn’t sitting in that rainwater for long. The temperature, both soil temperature and atmospheric temperature, also tend to stay pretty moderate and mild in that region of the country, without too many scorching heat waves or deep freezes. The last thing I want to speculate on is the nun herself. Reports say that she died at the age of 95, and in final photos she was on oxygen and did look like she had some sort of health complications, though I don’t dare guess what specifically. She was also a small woman from a height perspective. Assuming that she died a natural death, meaning no chemo or other drugs that would cause edema, we can assume that she likely went into the ground a bit on the dehydrated side. Add into that a burial in a full habit and veil which created a protective shield from the elements and other environmental factors like insects, and it suddenly starts to make sense as to why she is the way she is. Best guess is the right soil plus the right spot in the cemetery plus the right climate plus the right burial practice equaled one “incorruptible” but still decomposed human body. Not a miracle, just some luck and some really cool science. If people want to call that a miracle though, my secular self is not going to get in their way.

I initially thought, wow, I'm heading there to witness a miracle of an incorruptible.But I wondered why they quickly needed to cosmetize the exposed surfaces. If truly incorruptible, why not leave it alone. The question of her habit being in a non decomposing state, I found interesting. I know the Catholic church does not rush into proposing such things, and will take time to analyse all possibilities by inside and outside sources. In the meantime, I will wait and see. I pray for a true miracle, we need one at this time. Also, I don't think they should be charging for soil. This is Charleton. The site should be covered and secured pending investigation. This is what bugs me about this topic. There are a plethora of other incorruptible saints who have been beatified and the general response is that it’s a sign from a God. A miracle from God. Pundits were not chiming in and questioning things like pH of the soil, temperature, holes in the ground, etc. Now, these factors are being asked by everyone. And yes I’m going to say it regardless of who doesn’t like it, I believe these speculations and questions are coming from a racial place. Let it had been a white woman who was a nun or a little white girl and found “in corrupt” there wouldn’t be as much speculation. Guaranteed. For some reason it’s so hard to fathom that just like a white person, an African American can also be “incorrupt” as well. Is that so hard to believe?? Or is it such a grotesque thought that a black woman may be beatified and possibly made a saint in a church that was founded by Europeans?? And as far as the usage of wax, so what! Big deal. Yet again another factor that’s being called out but other white incorrupt bodies have been waxed as well. So in my opinion, give this woman the same level of dignity and respect and let her attain sainthood as she deserves without all the speculation and doubt.

@@SC-tl3px Definitely not a pity party and definitely not racism. I don’t have to assume there is prejudice for multiple reasons: one, scientifically and psychologically it’s proven that whites have an innate racial bias/prejudice. This is evidenced countless over countless times by your own Eurocentric psychologists. Therefore, anything dealing with a person of color, there is and always will be an air of doubt and over judgement. No spin there so moving on. Number 2, what I’ve explicated is evidenced right here on RU-vid in videos in regards to people who were found incorrupt. Everyone and their mother were praising God and calling it a miraculous work of God. Most pundits were not questioning science. Even when you scroll to the comment sections of those videos, most members of the RU-vid community was overjoyed to witness such an occurrence like incorruptibility. BUT! What’s the difference now???? Everyone has doubts. Now everyone is questioning the science. NOW people have more questions than answers allegedly. So it’s a simple comparison. What’s the obvious difference between Sister Lancaster and others found incorrupt?? The color of their skin. Hence, the reason this situation is getting treated with such scrutiny. Period.
@dariusdikembe1837
@dariusdikembe1837 Год назад
@@KaritheMortician I have to humbly disagree. Again, in this instance everyone has been questioning the science and the nature of her burial. Like you, I am very familiar with mortuary science and how the body decomposes. The woman’s coffin was split in half, she wasn’t embalmed, the lining of her casket was wearing away, and there were no scavengers that destroyed her body after 4 years. Just taking her not being embalmed, not buried in an outer burial container, not being surround by excessive scavengers, and being buried in forever changing climate in Missouri is enough for me to claim she is incorrupt. If pH of the soil is such a big factor in this instance, then that means we should go ahead and rip away sainthood from previous beatified persons because of the same thought process.

Here in our country (Philippines), there was once a famous female pornstar who died in 1984 then 29 years after her death, her body was exhumed in 2013 to be relocated beside her father's remains. However, upon opening the casket, relatives found her body to be in a perfect mummified state, with details on her skin still clearly visible. Similar cases have been reported in the cemetery, where saltwater sometimes seeps into underground tombs, preserving the human remains like a mummy. To make the long story short... Incorruption of the body doesn't only apply to Saints but to Sinners as well. It depends on the composition of the earth where you're burried in. Great insights on this matter Kari. 👍

I know there is nothing impossible for God, people who have been so pure in this life in their bodies, thoughts, and souls can be preserved from decomposing. I say this because people are accusing the clerical part of the church of making this up. This is not the case. Dying in the "odor of sanctity" is usually another divine sign of God's favor on His faithful servant. Some saints who died and whose bodies exuded a heavenly odor or perfume are St. Teresa of Avila, St. Therese of Lisieux (who is naturally associated with roses), St Padre Pio, St. Rita of Cascia. These odors are a special favor from God that marks a saintly person during their life or after death. Another mark is the aura of sanctity where the person acquires a wide reputation for holiness and people feel that they are in the presence of a holy person. Very sensitive, valid, and forthright points raised on incorruptibility, yet still respectful to the members of the Catholic faith. I was also wondering why they put masks and waxes to the "supposedly" incorruptible saints of God, I mean aren't they supposed to be incorruptible? I have learned that incorruptibility of saints isn't exactly absolute incorruptibility. From Bri Campbell: "In the realm of Catholicism, an incorrupt saint is one whose body experiences little, no, or delayed decomposition after death. It is believed that divine intervention has allowed a number of human bodies to forgo the normal decomposition process as a symbol of the deceased’s holiness while alive on earth, and can also be perceived as the person’s mortal remains being prepared for the resurrection of the body at the end of time." In addition, preserved bodies are divided into three categories: deliberately preserved, accidentally preserved, and incorruptible. After passing tests and declaring a saint or a holy person to be incorruptible, various ways are being done to avoid the further hastening of the body's decomposition such as wax, glass encapsulation, etc. I don't know if these make a lot of sense but I hope it sheds a bit of light on the matter. I would also like to invite everyone to watch and listen to some explanation by Fr. Mark Goring regarding the topic (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-e0m7H-JmDMM.html). A true incorruptible does not need any wax covering. However, some dead for centuries have began showing signs of decay, where a little wax here and there was purely "cosmetic"! It wasn't applied to cover up gross rot and decay. Eastern Orthodoxy has several it's said. A king who was decapitated in war and lost his right arm from around the 11th century was exhumed to be removed, where his body is still in tact and very flexible. But to be pronounced a Saint requires more than a nondecaying body, it requires miracles, real miracles, distinct from hoaxes. Which thiscase here it could be political, where it could have been demanded, etc. Where it happens. Then there's St.John of San Francisco and Shanghai. As I understand it,he wasfound deceased in a humid or moist environment where there should have been decay, but last I heard he's still intact and there's said to be miracles. Contact the Vatican as they are said to do more research to prove legitimate or hoax. They could have put antidessicants around her.

The Catholic process of inquiry is pretty thorough. I believe if her order says she was not embalmed then to the utmost of thier knowledge it is true. Since cloisterd nuns ordenarily are not that would hardly be unusual. In the case the nun was to be buried far from her convent she would be embalmed but that is seldom the case.

To what matters is the reminder that our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. Hence, our bodies should be treated with the love and fear of God in accordance with the scriptures. Any other thing is more or less a distraction to the message of the love and mercy of God.

If you wanted to scientifically comment on it - you also could have been present and examining the body. The Catholic Church will do a thorough investigation. Were you present? Did you look at the dirt? Did you examine the body? You are presenting a lot of questions. The Church has not made a ruling on this and will be doing a scientific investigation as they always do with possible miracles. They will ask these questions; they will do a scientific investigation. It seems you are implying a great deal that is a matter of speculation. Have you read about other incorruptible bodies in the Church? Perhaps this would give some thought about other incorruptible bodies which have been scientifically proven. There are believers and there are many people who believe this is a miracle. Historically the Catholic Church has done scientific investigations on Incorruptible bodies that have had different conclusions - some miracles, some not. In this case, honestly much of the Church actually has an interest in ruling against the incorruptibility of Sister Wilhelmina because of the Traditional movement she was involved in. Thank you.

I have been asked to comment and I did. There are many questions that need asked before ANY claims are made so they have already decided what they want to claim before they even think about possibilities.
@patriciabrower5527
@patriciabrower5527 Год назад
@@KaritheMortician Thank you. Those who believe in a miracle of incorruptibility are always subject to a scientific explanation. The Church always proceeds this way. People who believe at this point have their personal reasons for belief. Those who knew Sister Wilhelmina are aware, for example, that she had visions of Jesus as a child. The sisters themselves have witnessed that she was a woman of great holiness. All of these facts support people's belief in a miracle. As for "claims" only the Church can make any authorized claim for a miracle.

As there is no 'list' as to what makes a body incorrupt in the Catholic church it can complicate things. However if the body was embalmed or preserved (covered in resin etc) in anyway prior to burriel then it is not incorrupt. Any mumification would also rule it out. Also it does not have to be the whole body which survives to be declared as incorrupt eg there is one saint where only his tounge remained undecomposed but this was enough to have him declared incorrupt. This is also no longer seen as a miracle but as a 'favourable sign' it no longer makes them a saint but it might improve their chances.

Yes, the one documentary states that a mask was made for the young man Carlo. His body looks perfect, it unbelievable and the only way I am guessing is to cover all the decay, but still it’s not really incorrupt, I do not understand why they have to disturb a soul that is resting in peace, he did great things in life, he is loved and remembered for the outstanding things he did for others, so why expose him like that, it’s unpleasant and a very sad scene, just saying, it is my opinion and I am not an expert or religious authority if any kind.
@chinusingh6890
@chinusingh6890 Год назад
The body is exposed not for anything it is to help the present generation in the western world who are behind epicurianism to reflect the value in spiritual life. Yes in every era God uses someone unexpectedly as the instrument to strengthen the faith of the coming generation sometimes people only come out with negative views about it. In the history of the church always holy people were being criticized and it will continue. But I cannot understand criticism over the dead body how far justifiable, instead of criticizing the dead body if things are spoken who takes advantage of it may make some sense. Thank you.

Carlos Acutis was not incorrupt and all of the Catholic News Agencies reported accordingly. The Catholic Church is forever seeking the truth and takes much time and research, often using secular testing facilities. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XCDBekAQ-FI.html

I am a great skeptic in regard to this Kari, and I agree , there is a lot of questions to be asked. I don't know what the great fascination with this is,in particular with the Roman Catholics in this society. They seem to be grasping for some sort of proof of the resurrection, which I personally do not subscribe too.
