Your right on the money when you spoke about the image of you representing your company. I work for a automotive glass shop and we were offering a mobile service to our customers which has since been fazed out anyways when were offering that service I was running one of the mobile vans myself. I made my van up myself the way I wanted and always kept it clean and organized. One day I was sent to a customers hose to install his windshield and the first thing he said was let me see your van inside that will determine if you can work on my car , at first I was like what but then it made sense he went on to tell me if it’s clean that would mean you take some pride in your work anyways just a story to share and your to right in saying about organizing van or work car

The first time I saw these things, I thought to myself, "what's the big deal about a torsion box?" But when you slowly see that this master has thought about everything, you know you should listen and learn from him. Impressive product and a more impressive person.

Ron...im 45 yrs old. Its too late to make my bid, but if I were in my 20's I would sell everything but my tools and truck, seek you out, and force upon you the task of apprenticing me. I would worship at the Paulk alter of woodworking so that somebody would be able to carry on in your stead after the world loses you. You my friend are a master. I am humbled.

A great quote from you about lean that summarizes it all: "If you don't have time to be cleaned up, and lean, and efficient, that should be a signal to you, right there, to stop and think. You would have the time if you were set up, and organized, and lean."

Seeing the Festool Vac set up on the kart is what sold me on that plan beyond just the bench, because I already run a Vac under my bench. I have a portable hand tool bench I'll put one of these under just because this Kart is a perfect solution to a bench one can't easily make mobile due to the 15 degree angle of the legs.

the system itself is great....organised and neat and everything....but that type of a system will never work in Italy...where i live...in the little towns and everything....we usually have to go up 2 or 3 floors to go to a jobsite...we don't have the luxury to get on a jobsite and just setup in the driveway or whatever..we have to go so slim it's unbelieveble...great content as always

Hey Ron. I just wanted to say that I really enjoy your videos. Your organization and thought out process is something that I have always wanted. I just started a small woodworking business out of my one car garage. I am semi retired so I have the luxury of doing custom builds for people. I have been setting my garage shop up and after building a few things I have reorganized a couple of times. Due to limited space I built carts for all of my equipment and everything is mobile. Ive been working on a few projects this week and it has been an absolute pleasure to work with everything being organized. I clean my shop every day at the end of the day and plan my days work for what I feel I need to accomplish. Being organized and staying organized is key as well as keeping your shop clean which is also a safety item in my book. Great vids and I am sure I will get some of your plans soon as my business grows. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and thought out processes.

Wonderful thought process on the mobility being added into the smart total station and benches. I don't quite have the space in my trailer to put that system, as I use 2 MFT tables, and the Festool Kapex saw and stand to mimic you a bit. It works for me, but if I re-do my trailer for a 4th time ( I always lean it out with more ideas from you and others,) this system is making its way in on the next incarnation. Love your content, you make me love what I do with your insight and ideas to always better my craft. Have a great day Ron!

Cool Ron. This might be a good compromise for me for DYI projects that I do in my Driveway or remodeling work inside my house. There’s a lot of versatility in that design were I just need a bench in a room or next to a deck. Being able to break it down and move it in manageable pieces really helps out as well as the wheels. I use a solid door as my table but it sucks moving that up and down stairs and around corners. Keeps up the good work

Great setup. I use the original 4x8 workbench and really like it. I would like to step up to the new system, BUT storage is the problem. I currently stand both pieces of the work bench on end and lean against the garage wall for storage. I would not have room for the new system.

You may not have all the tools, neither did I 3 years ago but the plans make this a no brainer, especially since we can watch Ron build it first. One wouldn't necessarily need a track saw and parallel guides, but it sure is easier and more accurate with those.

I rarely get to set up in the garage, Drive ways are usually sloped here or I am on dirt. I am sure places like Nevada and Texas are vast swaths of flat land with concrete on it.
@TheSmartWoodshop
@TheSmartWoodshop 3 года назад
I work on sloped driveways often. Mostly when it is sunny and I just want to be outside with fresh air. Now with my benches on wheels, I can roll them out to work and back in at the end of the day. Slopes don't affect the use of the benches as a level surface isn't critical. Even garage floors are sloped for drainage. When I am doing a new home or complete remodel, the finish tools are most often inside. It wouldn't be very efficient to be installing cabinets or trim and walking outside for every cut. I guess some regions may have disparate methods, but I have worked in Washington State and Virginia. I also tour construction sites across the US and Canada and haven't seen any big differences. Also note, I have been the general contractor on 100% of my jobs for over 20 years. I don't work for other contractors. If I were offering my services to another contractor, I would charge more if they required me to set up my tools a great distance from the work. 😎

I love these videos. But I have to be way more lean then this. Most places I go can’t fit a trailer. I’ve been messing around fitting out an Explorer. To many condos and gated communities to have a trailer but at 6’5” working on the ground is not acceptable. I’ve got it all in the back and truck isn’t helpful in Florida because it rains at the drop of a hat. Love that I can flip the hatch up and be out of the rain if needed. Looking to upgrade to expedition soon. Just need a bit more space and I thing I’m good. Taking notes all the time. Thanks Ron.

Hi Chris, I call them "Sacrificial Strips." I have shown or talked about them hundreds of times to the point it feels very repetitive, but the question still comes up. The sacrificial strips are 18mm (3/4") strips of plywood. They can be any width and length.
