A backpack rapper is a backhanded compliment in which they use to label lyrical rappers who usually have deep rooted content with in their lyrics that doesn't go with the norms of what people rap about now a days. Now Hip Hop/ Rap has moved far from what it originated as. And in most cases, there's nothing wrong with growth, but there are alot of songs from today's artists that does not promote self love, and appreciation of your culture. An artist such as, Big Sexy Redd is the complete opposite what hip hop should be, and it's more for what the industry wants to put out to keep you in a certain place. Which is to act wild, vile, and uncivilized.

Backpacker rap was a term in the 2000's for abstract and/or mostly conscious rappers. Examples would be Black Thought, Common, Mos Def & Talib Kweli, Pharaohe Monch, Canibus. Early Kanye tried to tap into the niche also, wearing literal backpacks on stage. Props my guy Ahmad! You got the best hip-hop reactions on RU-vid. All legendary artists and reactions!!!! Best of the best music. Can't wait to see you just be defeated when you hear Mos & Talib together on that BlackStar album!!

Hip hop got real commercial in the '00s, which really started in the late '90s with the Puffy/Shiny Suit/Jiggy/Bling Bling era... and so there began this palpable friction between the underground scene and the commercial market. Some hip hop journalist mockingly referred to these underground "lyrical miracle" rappers as "backpackers" to sorta dismiss them, because they weren't making music that was blowing up on the radio and in the clubs...

'Backpack rappers' were people who made music for independent labels and were known as 'underground' artists. The part of the backpack was many wore them to carry their notebooks of rhymes they had written, or blackbooks for graffiti for those who wrote, along with their cassette/CD players to listen to their music. It was really a whole movement because I was part of that briefly; it was a phase in my youth I went through.

Mos Def brings lyricism that is ruthless and multi-layered, at the same time he's able to put in whimsical similies and metaphors to express his more soulful perspective on music as being a baby of 70's soul. He never abandons his roots to fit the thuggish expectations we have for aggressive hiphop artist. He is a perfect balacne of the past, present and future interpretations of black music. He is truly timeless.

As a "backpacker". We carried backpacks; usually JanSports because we didn't listen to the radio so we kept our music (cassetts,CDs then later hard drives full of music) graffiti/tagger/bomber tools (paint pens, sketch books, stickers and paint cans, rubber gloves and sometimes bolt cutters ) along with our rhyme books, books and probably a Hip-Hop publication (typically The Source magazine) on us at all times.
