Guitar cover of Incubus - NICE TO KNOW YOU (the redo!)
This was the very first song I covered on this channel a little over 3 years ago. It's a song that always makes me smile as first and foremost, I love it to pieces, but it also makes me cringe when I watch my original cover of this track back! It is a nice benchmark as I feel it shows my progress getting to grips with recording these videos and is a nice reminder that slowly but surely, I am still getting better at playing guitar.
With the knowledge I have gained, I wanted to try and get a better version of this cover and although closer than my original, I'm still not 100% happy with the phaser and delay combo. The PRS Archtop that Mike was using around this time, combined with the Mesa TremOVerb, really must contribute a ton to get the "Morning View Sound." My Ibanez is just not voiced the same way, but I have done my best. I'd love to try the PRS into Mesa one day, maybe if I ever win big on a lottery!!
Finally, this song seems a nice way to say goodbye to this pretty awful year and a nice way to say a huge thank you to everyone that continues to watch and support my channel - special shout out and thanks to all my Patreon members past and present.

Always look forward to these covers! Just like you, this song has melded into my neurochemistry in a way that makes me feel happiness, awe, nostalgia, beauty, etc. as the twinkly swells come in. I'm a bit biased as MV is my all-time favorite album, but to me this is one of the best album intros out there.

Nice one Nick! Mikey's PRS Archtop combined with his Trem-O-Verbs are really what shaped his sound. The extra thickness with the Archtop model added to his boomy sound and the cherry on top being his 13 gauge strings I believe. Incredibly unrealistic to use that heavy of a gauge long term with almost zero benefits but I do believe it contributed to the sound we know and love. What camera(s) do you use to record? Your stuff looks great

Sounds great man! Any suggestions on an alternate distortion pedal for this type of tone? The suhr and the amp sim both sound awesome but they are a little out of my price range

Thank you! The clean and dirty sound on this one was actually a plugin (in the description of the video) and not the Suhr. I haven’t used that for a while now. In terms of other pedals, you could always look at something that emulates a Mesa kind of sound as that was Mike was using during the early years 👍🏻. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the sub! In answer to your questions: 1. It's a constant listening and learning process - I love re listening to various tracks and comparing to how he plays them live to try and figure out settings etc. 2. It's an advance from Make Yourself and yes, it has a lot of mids - I would still say it's pretty high gain at times, but the pickups in his PRS Hollowbody at the time add a lot of clarity. You get this really clear but fairly distorted sound, it's pretty unique!

Thank you! For this video, it’s the clean amp on the neural dsp archetype petrucci plugin 👍🏻. Early on it was the clean channel of my Blackstar HT-5R and these days, I use my Mesa Tremoverb for clean and dirty tones. Hope that helps and thanks for watching 😊
