India's greatest loss against the West Indies -1997 

Awesome victory for the kings of cricket. Though an Indian, I salute the glorious sportsmanship and thirst for victory of my ever favourite West Indies. Very painful to see that Great West Indies has now become Waste Indies.

The match, similiar to Ind-Aus 2004-05 Mumbai 4th test.Even defending can be as thrilling and exciting as chasing!

The interesting thing about this match was when India got bowled out it rained heavily and the field was flooded for two days. If India could have hung a little long they could have earned a draw. But what a Bowling attack that was.

I remember this match. It was a shameless loss comparable to the Ignominous collapse in SA in 1996.

Thank you for suggesting this, since I've wanted to relive it again from my school days . I remember that it was the only Test game with a winner during that 1997 five test tour by India.It coincided with Brian Lara getting his first (even though temporary) try at the West Indies captaincy.The win boosted his chances at finally getting it permanently in 1998.The loss affected counterpart Tendulkar's hold on the position.

Batting on such wickets is a real test for a batsman's greatness.. and seeing great players unable to play just shows how difficult a wicket this was to bat on.. !

I had seen this match Ambrose had taken 5 wicket .top class Indian batting line up failed in overseas again.

Wow the ball that got Sidhu out , was very difficult to play in those days, today it gets hit with jump in air...what time ..changed a lot in sport.

Beating westindies in westindies in 80s and 90s was next to impossible. It was no shame for theopposition to admit it at that time.

marvelous performance by the W.I fast bowlers however the only one Indian had presented the great resistance and that was Sunil Gavaskar from commentary box...

This loss and getting bowled out for 54 vs SL in Sharjah forever haunted me as a kid .

The pitch was bad , but there were some excellent deliveries that got the batmens out.

Those days fielding was so relaxed, not much diving..no desperation to stop the 4..ppl were taking it easy compared to today

This Indian cricket team was filled with real legendary players. If the current Indian fancy cricket team would had faced this West Indies cricket team then they would have gone all out for 25 runs. or would had lost the match with one innings.

Amazing how India had 5 brilliant batsmen all come through at roughly the same time and all at roughly the same age. I don’t think we’ll see that happen again in test cricket.

The Sachin dismissal closed the debate regarding who was the batsman of his generation. It could only be a Lara. You have to win games.

It's depressing to think we might never see a West Indies side like this again. Such a loss to world cricket that they have declined so far.

I went to my tutorials in evening assuming that I will watch the highlights with india winning easily by 10 wicket only to follow by a shocker that india were bowled out for mere 81....

India had the best batting line up and see Azhar coming at 5 down.. but still could not win... on the other side, I would say WI had best bowling attack

Talk about a minefield. Ball constantly taking off like crazy from length and seaming with every delivery. Pretty much impossible to bat on. Recall watching this live as a kid and being embarrassed by India's failure to chase a paltry score of 120. Watching these highlights today though....I can at least understand why it happened.

This pitch is killer.

Very painful defeat. On a pitch that was getting terrible on each passing day,West Indies was reeling at 95/8 in the 2nd innings with a lead of just 74 runs - and all proper batsmen back in the pavilion. A target of 85-90 would have given lesser pressure and a famous win to India. But the 9th and 10th wicket pair of West Indies - Curtly Ambrose,Franklyn Rose and Mervyn Dillon - added another 45 runs(!!!) on this wicket and took the West Indian 2nd innings total to 140 - setting India a target of 120. and that turned out to be the difference. Lets get this straight. Sachin Tendulkar was a very good captain. But he always captained an ordinary side and was extremely unlucky as well. Now many fans call him bad captain. Unfortunate. In this case,the Indian bowlers failed to finish the job in the 2nd innings and let the match slip away.

This was a very tricky pitch. I had my doubts if India will be able to score 120 on this even with a very strong batting line up. A couple of friends even made fun of me for saying it. Look at the balls that got Sindh and Azharuddin. Shows the unpredictability of the pitch.

BCCI should seriously consider bringing Windies Cricket to the Indian television screens with so many channels now showing interest in cricket.
