Well look who’s back with a video! My break has definitely lasted longer than I anticipated, but that’s life I suppose! As I mention in the video, I won’t be returning to a regular upload schedule - my life’s schedule just won’t allow it. But I’ll film when I can and get videos out randomly - I definitely intend to continue!
As for this video, I wanted to share my further thoughts about the Challenger after almost 2 years and over 20k miles. I love the bike, but don’t be shocked if one of these videos comes out and I have something new - maybe even something radically different! We’ll see!
In the meantime, thanks for sticking with me! You all stay safe out there, and I’ll see you when I see you! ✌️

Bikers, stop apologizing for not customizing your bike. You don’t have to add every mod or upgrade out there. You ride what you wanna ride. After market exhausts are usually hella loud. If you’re happy with your bike, I’m whatever state it’s in, than just enjoy riding. And if anyone teases you for not riding a stock bike, that’s not a person you wanna have as a friend and just keep riding. Be safe.

Throughout this year I have looked for motorcycles reviewers who are close to my height. I am slightly taller then you but I am quite a few years older. At this time I’m finding my bike becoming a bit heavier then I prefer and a bit taller then I like. So watching all you’re reviews have been very helpful for me to consider if I should purchase another brand. I had been leaning towards a goldwing with the dct, but recently an old friend stopped by with his Indian and told me to throw a leg over it. When both feet hit the ground flat I couldn’t believe it. That made me revisit you’re previous Indian videos. Many thanks for the time and effort you put into these videos to inform all us riders and many thanks from us short riders. Ride safe.
@DMVSoloRider
@DMVSoloRider Год назад
Thanks Dave, much appreciated! Not only do I find the Indians a touch lower to the ground, but I promise you they feel substantially lighter as well! I don’t know how or what Indian does when they engineer their bikes, but “low center of gravity” is spot on! My Challenger feels closer to a Scout than a Road Glide! ✌️

It’s about time you did another video! Those Challenger’s are beasts! Glad you are enjoying it and I’m the same with my new Chieftain 116. It’s as fast as I need it to be. I am putting slip on’s on as we speak because I want just a little more sound. There is an aftermarket fix for the windshield. Without it, it will happen again. Keep rolling man! Post videos on your timeframe. That’s what I do. We’ll still be here to watch when you do.

DMV, good to see you back! Physically, you and I are exact opposites. I am pushing 6' 5" 280lbs with a 33 inseam. When I got back into riding after a 45 year hiatus, I found most motorcycles to be too small. I ran across a Victory Vision Tour with ridiculously low mileage and got it for $6,000. It fit perfectly and the only modification I made was a set of Grip Puppies to widen the grips for my large palms which also killed all handlebar vibration. The bike came standard with heated grips, heated seats, for all season riding. The stock seat is perfect. What really peeves me about the changes with the Indian line is the need to have to pay for these items separately after having dropped 30 grand on the bike to begin with. It seems that the more tech you put on the bike, the more potential headaches you will encounter at some point. This has shied me away from taking a leap to the Challenger or one of the other newer Indians. Be interested on your take on this.
@DMVSoloRider
@DMVSoloRider Год назад
Good to be back, even if only intermittently! 🤣 I think for riders like us who are perhaps not the “average” rider in terms of size, it can be a real chore to make a bike work for you. And in that sense, like I said in the video, I think Indian should build their bikes in such a way that they don’t interfere with the process of “making a bike your own” - don’t interfere with customers’ ability to swap out bars, seats, pegs, etc. You certainly won’t get me arguing against a “package” approach to selling bikes - offer a “short rider” or “tall rider” package where you can swap out the stock bars/seat/pegs, etc, when you buy the bike and not have to pay separately/more. It’s certainly an approach that would distinguish Indian from HD. At the same time, let’s face it - Indian is much smaller than HD, and economically, it probably doesn’t make a lot of financial sense to create that approach in selling their bikes at this point. It’s one of those things that could really distinguish the brand and grow it, but the process of implementing it could interfere with the brands’ growth to begin with. Tough choices! Having said that, I do wish Indian would offer a broader array of options, and do more to promote a vibrant 3rd party market. Here in 2022 your options for customizing Indians is still just too limited. Having said that, and setting aside rider size, you can buy fully dressed Indians with all the bells and whistles - the Roadmaster and the Pursuit. And you’ll pay less for those bikes than you will buying base models and building them up to full dressers. They have the heated grips, heated seats, etc. But they come with stock bars and not the kind of things that make a big difference for taller or shorter people. 🤷‍♂ In the meantime, I’m pleased to report I think my handlebar situation is resolved! I don’t want to spoil it, cause you know that’s a video 🤣, but assuming everything works, having a channel and folks watching my videos may have presented me with an awesome/complete solution! Stay tuned! 🔥

What you need is a Clockwerks flip windshield if they are still making them. That'll make the air foil so you won't get any bufetting.
@DMVSoloRider
@DMVSoloRider Месяц назад
Yeah, that’s what was on my Challenger. I actually tried the larger shield they make, and that was overkill. What can I say, but I want no buffeting, but also to not have to look through the shield when it’s all the way down too. Just a challenge to work through with bikes, right? 🤣

Great to see you again. I've followed you since I found your channel last year and watched all of your videos. I'm also vertically challenged with arthritis, compressed discs and a broken L1 vertebrae. I just bought a 2022 Pursuit Limited with Burgundy and Maroon paint and I'm loving it. My problem is the same as yours, can't reach the stock handlebars comfortably and can't get the reduced reach bars until sometime after the first of the year. It's really wearing on me and stopping me from going on the kind of rides that I want to go on but they get longer every time I go out. I'd really like to know what type of audio setup you're using, it's so clear and sounds so much better than most of the other moto vloggers out there. Makes a real difference when watching videos. Anyhow I appreciate your videos and hope to see more. Have a good one.
@DMVSoloRider
@DMVSoloRider Год назад
Hey Dennis, congrats on your Pursuit! I'm actually in the process of (hopefully) solving my handlebar/reach issues on the Challenger. I already have the reduced reach bars on the challenger, but they simply don't come back far enough. I'm having custom bars made with a grand total of 5" of pullback from stock (stock wiring has 6" of spare wire, and you don't want to cut/extend the Challenger's wiring, so 5" was the most I wanted to go with). Hopefully they'll be here by next week, and I'll have them on the bike for a long trip I'm taking for Thanksgiving! Feel free to hit me up via email and I'll share details - just don't want to do that in public, because I'll spoil some good content! ;) Aside from my solution, I'm really not aware of anything other than Indian's reduced reach bars, or installing the aftermarket dash kit/risers. Some folks have said the Klock Werks Klipsch Hanger bars can be installed in reverse, and that can give you a bit more reach, but I spoke to Klock and they really couldn't promise that was the case - I wasn't eager to spend $500+ for nothing. As for my audio, thanks for the compliment! That's probably the most challenging part of doing this! I did a video showing how I rigged up my Icon Airflite for motovlogging. The important part was how I glued a clip inside the helmet to hold my mic under my mouth, but away from the interior shell of the helmet. Sometimes when you cram a mic between the interior shell and ear pad like so many do, it can create some vibration/feedback in the mic, so that was my solution. Having said that, sometimes I think my audio is sharp, and sometimes it's really muddy. I'm no audio mixing expert, so I do the best I can - it's a constant struggle to get consistent audio! But practice makes perfect, so if you're filming just keep playing around with it and you'll find a solution that works for you! DMV

Just curious about the review... i totally agree with your review. It would be helpful to state your riding conditions in those 20,000 miles. Have your ever used rain mode, rode in the rain? What temperature have you experienced in your journey? Have you started the bike when it's 35°F ? I'm not new to the challenger, but hopefully curious minded new owners or buyers are watching . I have '20 challenger DH and most new owner complaints are not covered in many review videos. Challenger is cold blood and starts, but sounds horrible on cold start on chilly 45° and colder starts. Battery or starter sound horrible in these conditions. Your ride command has been working, used on long trips? Tried navigation when, you know the way to compare to your known route. I found the Ride Command is really different and useless in some areas or states. Best bike I've ever owned, very small problems that can and will happen on all motorized vehicles.
@DMVSoloRider
@DMVSoloRider Год назад
This video was a follow-up to a much longer, more detailed review I did after 10k - check it out! I did mean to address the kind of riding I did the 2nd 10k, but completely forgot! The first 10k was all kinds of riding. The 2nd 10k was far more highway than anything else. My current set of tires have 8k on them, and there are still some of those stubbies on the sides, so I definitely haven’t been leaning it over as much as I’d like. 🤷‍♂️ Temps - I ride year round, so teens to 100s. And I agree - Challenger sounds like a dying cat on start-up! 🤣 I don’t usually have any issues actually getting it started. But I also don’t use a tender, so some of the initial reluctance to start after a week or two is probably just the battery waking up!

GPS is terrible. Bluetooth connectivity is dreadful. The Honda promise to continually update the software just didn't happen.Glad to hear you love this bike so much seriously considering trading my Goldwing in for one of these.

Regarding curved windshield… I have experimented with them more than once on my former Chief Vintage. In theory it sounds good, but in reality they don’t reduce buffeting, they just introduce a different type of buffeting (for me it was like someone was sitting behind me slapping my helmet)…That’s why I’m sticking with the stock Challenger windshield. Common sense says that the curve whips the air into an even greater vortex than a non-curve shield, so to completely avoid the buffeting you need a really tall flip windscreen… so why bother.
@DMVSoloRider
@DMVSoloRider 11 месяцев назад
Think it depends on a host of factors - rider profile, helmet type, etc. I find the flare windshield works best when I’m wearing my Ruroc. The stock shield is a perhaps a little better with my HJC. The shark nose on the challenger is superior for me compared to the bat wing on my old chieftain. Mix of factors, and so far nothing is a 100% solution for someone like me who hates looking through a windshield…except a road glide fairing. 🤣

I have this model which is challenger basic. However, I think this model has some problem on the engine liability. During the driving, valve noise so much. All the compartments are not well organized and fabricated well I think. Indian motorcycle must be improve on this matter and recall all over the world. It will take effect on the durability of the engine.
