We re-join the train at Solan for a high speed trip to Shimla, seeing the line from the driving cab. Enjoy some amazing mountain scenery on our way to the old summer capital.
Hi Ivan, This music is 'Village Groove' from 'Jewelbeat'. RU-vid does not allow me post the link, but it is given in the credits at the end of the video. Tim.
Hi, the music at 17.00 is from Jewelbeat and it is called 'Worldly Feelings'. Type 'Jewelbeat Royalty Free Music' into Google. RU-vid does not allow me to give the Web address, but it is given in the credits at the end of the video. I hope this helps. Tim.
Great video. Thank you so much for sharing. This railway was a great feat for its time but its very hard to find any written history about it which is a pity.
Hi, thank you for commenting, I too have tried to find books about this line without much success. This link gives a little information about the line en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalka%E2%80%93Shimla_Railway . If you know of any books covering the building of the line, please let me know......Tim.
Well that was fun Tim! First time I ve seen that one. I presume it was steam hauled in Raj days. Amazing how the fauna changes as get to higher altitude. London to Brighton in 4 minutes ??? Huh!! J P
Hi John, it was operated with steam locos in the days of the Raj, one of the locos is still active and hauls special trains occasionally. London to Brighton in a preserved "Brighton Belle train" may happen soon, but I don't think the old lady will manage the trip in 4 minutes.
Thanks for replying Tim. I was being facetious comparing it to the London to Brighton film in the 1950s! It was one of the interludes shown on television in those days, to give them time to move the cameras from one studio to another. They were bulky things wheeled about on trolleys and not many of them!! I d love to ride The Belle again one day! John
Thanks John, I didn't know short films were shown to allow time to move cameras around the studios. It makes sense now you mention it .... better than watching adverts Tim.
Good video. Only one problem. The speed-up reminds me of Lionel toy trains. Running much too fast, with abrupt stops and starts. Interesting none the less.
Hi, I once saw a large Lionel railway setup at the Bluebell Railway in England, the trains really did have just two speeds, Flat and stopped, just like this sped up Indian rail trip :-)
Hi Tim Yes its a great trip i did it in May 2012. When did you film this? It is great to see it from the drivers view and I did it return too. Really enjoy being in the drivers seat. Its a 6 hour journey in one direction and is great to see it 5 times faster, loved it!!!!!!!
Hi Byran, I am pleased you enjoyed the videos, they were taken in March 2013. Travelling from Kalka to Shimla by train has to be one of the worlds most memorable experiences.
Yes to me it was too! can remember every one of those 103 tunells too! love to do more in India too! have a very close indian friend good for translation.
Hi, thank you for your comment. The music at 19.45 is "Ritual Dances" from Jewelbeat. RU-vid does not allow me to give you the link. Type "Jewelbeat royalty free music" into Google, that should take you to their site, then type in "Ritual dances" to find the track. I hope this helps. Tim.
Water dripping in some of the tunnels did cause a few problems, I was in the passenger in one of the carriages and the driver was very helpful, it was just unfortunate one or two drips hit the windscreen in front of the camera. That's life, but I was just to grateful to the railway for helping me in the first place.
