A quick note regarding leaks: I’m sure some of them are true. I haven’t read leaks in a while, as I said - I generally avoid them. The ones I refer to in this video have been circulating for quite a while and were completely untrue. I’m not here challenging anyone who got leaked info that may have been accurate, especially more recent info. I was just noting that a lot of the early stuff that I’ve seen and heard people claim for several months will be in the movie is absolutely not accurate.

Agreed. I prefer general recommendation levels like "Highly Recommended," "Recommended," "On the fence," etc. I do find review grades *in general* more helpful than none at all, as I feel we subconsciously 'rank' all films we see anyway... or at least I do.

Playing devil's advocate: what is the difference between this and 1-5 stars? Is there one?
@FestArc
@FestArc 11 месяцев назад
@@YouFightLikeACow something about numbers feels more definitive , like a right or wrong answer on a test, while scales like this come off as more opinionated. I know that's more of an illusion because the number scale is still the opinion of the person giving the score but to have a descriptive scale gives more context than a number.

@@YouFightLikeACow Yes there is a difference. 1-5 stars means different things to different people, just like letter grades. Some people see "C" or "3 stars" as OK while others see anything below a "B" or "4 stars" as "trash" or failing. Having a descriptive scale lets you know what the person ranking the movie actually means with their ranking.

@@roofdogblues7400 There is no difference between a bad movie and a film you don't like since saying it's bad is saying you don't like it. You might think other people will like it more or less than you, but that's a different story.
@roofdogblues7400
@roofdogblues7400 11 месяцев назад
@@miz4535 I disagree, since people use words in multiple ways, a word can have multiple meanings. But we are talking about a numerical rating system. There are two movies I can think of that are masterpieces according to lots of people that I would rate a 2 out of 5, because I found them boring and couldn't watch without falling asleep. If I just used an out of 5 rating and rated them a 2, you'd think I thought those movies were bad, but by every other standard of judging a movie, as professional reviewers tend to do, they're great movies, and just because I found them boring, doesn't mean you will. But if you went on my rating, you'd avoid watching them because I rated them poorly. But if I used a sliding scale that put them on the "I'm not a fan" tier, you may be more inclined to watch them for yourself, especially if you listened to or read my review. Those movies are Blade Runner and Lost in Translation.

I love the original trilogy mostly because of the filmmaking. The amount of insane stunts, great locations, amazing sets & clever vfx work still holds up. Films like Mad Max: Fury road, The raid 2, Extraction & Rurouni Kenshin: The final already showed great examples of how to apply these elements in modern filmmaking. This film almost seems like the complete opposite, lots of noticable cgi.
@CMontgomeryBurns09
@CMontgomeryBurns09 11 месяцев назад
If I may nitpick, I'd argue for Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning instead of The Final. It's the most stripped-down, the most realistic, the least cartoony, etc., as well as the most standalone of the live-action series. Takeru Satoh is like the Grim Reaper in that movie. Also, I favor The Raid (2011) over its sequel (2014) any day. I liked the latter, but it was *at minimum* half an hour too long and boasted an entire subplot with Yayan Ruhian that should've been cut.

I couldn't agree more with your critique about so many movies having to be 2 and a half hours. One of the best parts about movies from like the '80s and '90s is the run times, some amazing movies will only be like an hour and 30 minutes max including credits and you'll be like , "that was perfect you don't need anything else."

Love the sliding scale. I agree that reviews having a definite score kind of diminishes what makes enjoying films special. You’re going to enjoy different movies in different ways, so grading two movies as a B or 7/10 doesn’t mean they’re the same quality, it just means you got the same amount of enjoyment just maybe for different reasons. Idk if that makes sense, but all that to say I like the new system

I don't see why a numerical score doesn't allow this. If someone said "it's good" that's one statement about what could be many types of films, so you have to take into context the type of film. Same thing applies with a numerical score.

I love the sliding scale. The distinction between "not a fan" & "stay away" is helpful because you may not be a fan of movie/franchise which others are fans of versus movie you genuinely feel are so awful that you give a review with the warning "STAY AWAY" at all costs. The three upper tier categories give enough room to gage how positive your review actually is. :)
@miz4535
@miz4535 11 месяцев назад
Numerical scores allow this as well. Not a fan could be something like 4/10, while stay away is like 1/10. And people shouldn't just look at the score at face value anyway but listen to the review to get the context needed. Problem is some people just look at the score, which is why it's better not to have any.

@@jameswilliams-zr8co why is that interesting? Look what they did with Star Wars, Jurassic Park. There are precious few examples of this working, notable recent examples are Blade Runner 2049 and Top Gun Maverick. The people making the former were allowed to have a creative vision, but it cost the studio. The latter was a sequel to a film that's not good, and they made it years later to allow the technology to improve and to have a good script. These are exceptions but also circumstances not present for this film, where it's "board room approved" to the max and made first and foremost for money, although I'm sure Ford and Mangold are still passionate. Also, the idea of Indiana Jones and the idea of an old man who is musing on the past and becoming irrelevant are simply incompatible. They want to attach a character study to an existing brand and it just won't work because of the nature of the brand. You either make a character study, or you make something people expect from an Indiana Jones film. You can't make both. This is one of the fundamental problems with sequels: people's expectations of what it should be impact what it can be even if those ideas are good in a vacuum.

I feel the sliding scale is just a more explicit scoring scale. If I numerically rate something I consider how much I like it with 10 being amazing, 5 being ok, 1 being one of the worst things I've ever seen, and give a number based on that. No one should think too much about it, but it's good when you can see a score distribution (as opposed to one number). Then things like divisive films are clear. Beau is Afraid got mixed reviews but that was divisive and not just bland, so I watched it and ended up quite liking it. If it's a film everyone thinks is just ok (like this one) then chances are I won't go beyond just finding it ok, so I'm less interested. Similar score but different result. The only thing is everyone needs to have a sensible and somewhat consistent scale for this to work. Imdb ratings more often than not are not bell curves but decaying from 10/10 (with a spike at 1/10). Not how most distributions should look, so it is pretty much useless.

I'm so shocked at all the negative reviews about this movie. Don't believe any of these hype train bad reviews! These click thirsty influencers are just copy/pasting these review videos for cash views. None of them are qualified to review movies. I didn't want to go see it myself after watching all the bad reviews and how all the theatres were empty etc. But my wife dragged me there tonight. I was blown away at how good this movie was. Absolutely none of the negative reviews were accurate. The CGI was good, the characters were well developed, Ford's performance was just as exciting as all the other movies and he's fkn 80! Dude's body is solid muscle omfg. These influencer first reviews are not from qualified film critics, they don't know the first thing about film history or what solid writing/directing is about. This movie completely delivered on all fronts. Definitely one of the last great adventure movies we'll get. I'm no fan of Disney trust me, but this movie is not bad it's even very very good. The effect these trigger happy negative reviews have had on the movie is tragic. Just go see it yourself, trust me you'll be happy you did.

I really appreciate the sliding scale. I appreciate the reviews and I listen intently for your recommendation or not, and still will but it will feel a little more definitive.

I like the scale but could you maybe say if the fine movie is a watch in theaters or wait to stream

I like the sliding system. Sharronda from Pay or Wait has a good system and so does Double Toasted with Full Price/Matinee/Rental.

Okay. I was dreading the press screening next week, but now I’m a bit calmer. Not really looking forward to seeing this now, but a bit more at peace with it. Thanks to you Dan.

In fact your subdued speech in this video is much more pleasant than the one in other videos. Please continue this way! 😄👍

Love the sliding scale! Basically all I want to know is if someone thinks I should see it in theaters or if it can wait until streaming or if its not worth seeking out in any form. I think your sliding scale accomplishes this perfectly.
