I do agree that one of the main problems with this movie and the last one is the fact that Harrison Ford is quite literally a senior citizen, so they can't really maintain the same fun action and momentum that the original trilogy excelled at.
Had the same feelings too while watching this film. I'm not mad though. I prefer to see Harrison Ford played the character Indy that gets old and weaker and less adventurous, fitting of his age, instead of acting young (which has a very high chance of making the character cringy). In 4th movie (and even more so in 5th ones) Indy already showing signs that he is no longer the way he used to be, which is understandable. Characters grow old as time goes by. That is a sign of universe continuity. Plus, it opens up an opportunity for the newer characters to take some of the spotlight from Indy and grew their character for the possibility of the future film. For example, Indy's son (played by Shia La Boeuf) is introduced as an independent, young buck with a set of skills and full of energy. His character can perfectly fill in the shoe of Indy. Unfortunately, Indy was still taking the lead throughout the movie, thus making it hard for Indy's son to be the replacement character for the franchise. The same happened for this 5th movie. At this point, Indy is way too old. I see him more of a grumpy old man instead of charismatic and wise character. He refuses to be adventurous. The only reason he is in this adventure is to solve the problem that Wombat has created for him. Speaking of which, Wombat is another new character introduced into the franchise, and she has all the capability to fill in the role of Indy. In fact, I believe that she is the lead character for this movie, while Indy is just there for the ride. She is more actively involved throughout the adventure like solving the clues, break up a fight against the villain, and shown to be more knowledgeable in this movie. The ending is to me. But it is not an impactful one, especially since this could be the last one of the franchise. I would rate the end of the 4th movie higher than this 5th one. It did not give much satisfaction to me. But hey, at least Indy did make it back home and not stranded somewhere in ancient era. God, I was praying so hard in the theater when Indy told Wombat to leave him be in the ancient time. That was a bad move by Indy. Again, showcasing of how Indy has already given up in his life and is ready to abandon his legacy.
Only complaint I really could have was the fact that there was no explanation on how the hell voller survived that pole to the face at the beginning and then came back with no severe damage to his face at all
That’s so true. If you take a hit from a steel pole on a train going at terminal velocity, your skull is caved in, you are dead. That being said, I like how serious of a villain he was and he rlly made you hate him, which added a lot in my opinion
I actually kind of disagree, I think Harrison did a good job acting in the movie when he talked about his friend dieing I genuinely felt his pain, it was far more the direction of the scene and dialog rather than the delivery from the actors
Yeah, I think the purpose of the scene was just to show how uncaring and closed off Wombat is, the way Charlie was mad at the way they joked after a major character death was the exact same anger I saw in Indy after hearing them joke. She's like Indy himself but without a lot of the warmth and empathy. The movie is essentially her growing that.
@@KillZoneHart1 That's because John Williams wasn't the composer. He just wrote the score and let his student compose the score, that's why it sounds a little off sometimes.
@@MrMcMuffinJr1999 hans zimmer has nothing on john Williams. Zimmer makes soulless trash while Williams makes symphonic masterpieces to rival those of the late romantics.
A big point in favour of this movie is that Harrison Ford felt like he had more energy and life than he did with Crystal Skull, despite being like 10+ years older
I honestly think that the first 20 minutes of the movie is objectively better than the entirety of kingdom of crystal skull in every conceivable way. It’s a shame that this movie didn’t get better after the first 20 minutes.
Respect for not just shitting on the movie like every other big name reviewer. While the film definitely could've done some things better I didn't think it was the dumpster fire that many were saying. Like you said, not a bad film. As a huge Indy fan I enjoyed it overall. The man with the hat could've had a far worse send off.
I thought the conflict between Indy and Helena was explained by Indy promising Helena's father he would destroy the Dial while Helena just wants to get a cash grab.
Indy claims it belonged in a museum. I think he didn't have any specific intentiins for it other than keeping it out of the hands of those who would misuse it and clear his name
@@caesar_19yeah it didn’t really explain why he kept it. Also their conflict came from him being her godfather but not being there for her when her dad died.
Charlies probably spot on about Harrison Ford not being overly excited about reprising his role. For an actor who had two major franchises under his belt, even before movie franchises were really a thing - hes probably sick to death of being pushed to reprise roles from 40 years ago, and each time he agrees its him who has to face all the flak of "hes too old for it", not the directors, writers or producers who keep insisting he come back.
I don't know, I agree the writing overall wasn't amazing but Indy is actually one of Harrison's favorite characters and he reportedly had a pretty large say in the direction they took him in this movie. I definitely didn't get the sense that he was phoning it in just for the paycheck like I did with his performance in The Force Awakens. I thought his performance in DoD was one of the strongest parts of the movie and really carried the mediocre writing.
Imma be honest I actually liked watching kingdom of the crystal skull, because growing up we used to play that movie in our Chrysler minivan while on long trips so I have a lot of fond memories associated with it, I also remember being absolutely deafened by that THX intro everytime before it started
Well, a lot of the first half of Crystal Skull is good. Ignoring the boring FBI stuff and that stupid fridge scene, the scenes with Indy and Mutt were classic.
Been watching Indy since I was a kid, and the movie was great I thought. The scene of Indy speaking to Archimedes felt like the franchise had really come full circle. Also people saying Indy looked bad in fight scenes were wrong. Thus I was surprised when there was little of Indy being old and more of him leaping into action.
Finally watched the movie on Disney Plus despite reservations given some of the opinions I heard and didn't want to waste my time. Pleasantly surprised by this movie, now I feel bad I didn't go to see in theaters
I’ve noticed a large part of the stiffness is people not treating character deaths seriously anymore. They set up these relationships and then kill a character, as a writer it’s your job to take that seriously and understand that while grief may not hit everyone the same, having none at all makes the movie insanely less human.
@@katsu890it isn’t a Hollywood trope, it’s a reality trope. You might not have to deal with it in our Modern age, but parents have their kids die in war, they get divorced. There are a lot less broken people in 2023 but you’re still watching a period film.
If I'm gonna be honest I dont see that in this movie. I liked how Indy grounded Helena and Teddy by making them aware that his friend was in fact just murdered in front of them. I dont think the movie skipped over it any more than older movies do. For example, in A New Hope, a movie that is constantly praised for good reason, when Obi-Wan dies the characters are sad at first and we even get a short scene showing Luke's grief similar to Indy when they escape the Nazis, however the movie doesn't longer too long on Obi-Wan's death because there is still more that needs to be done. In Dial of Destiny, I dont think the character death is glossed over, but the movie doesn't linger on it too long as it still has more story to tell while staying true to the Indiana Jones feeling.
I actually loved the movie. I came in with super low expectations bcs of all the reviews, but it blew me away. The god-daughter wasn't as annoying as people are claiming she was, the action and CGI was great, and most importantly the story was classic Indiana Jones (just with a bit more fantasy). I fully understand why people hated it (time travel) but I thought it fit perfectly. I feel bad for people that didn't enjoy it, but thankfully I loved it and it's an extra Indiana movie I can watch on repeat.
ikr, especially about the god-daughter character? She didn't have all the answers, she relied on other people in tight spots, she was a career criminal con artist so yeah, she needed to play it super-cool from time to time, but she changed in the end.
god daughter actually being a con artist was a twist I actually wasn't expecting. I went in thinking she was essentially gonna be an Indiana Jones fangirl and whatnot but their connection and her being a light foil was nice.
I had the exact same experience basically. It was honestly a solid film. Nothing absolutely game changing, but I think people just like to go into stuff hating it before they see it.
This was just a depressing sad film . Seeing Indy lose everything he loves and then become a bitter old man who lost his passion for life and adventure felt like an awful way to treat one of my childhood heroes. I feel it wasn’t right to do that to him after he got such a nice ending…twice now
The whole point of the movie is his final redemption. I hate people who have this idea that their favorite characters must always be the same. Life happens. Sometimes shit is sad. At the end of the movie Indy has his final redemption and has "returned".... It's not that hard to analyze it....
@@gio1369I guess it’s interesting from a story perspective. I just don’t understand why they have to take what was essentially a closed book and then reopen it. It just seems cruel to strip something good from Indy, especially as they basically made him suicidal by the end.
@@gio1369cool. I'm absolutely sick of this story line. It's boring and played out and in every fucking new sequel movie out there. It may have been "subversive" at one point but at this point it's just flat out annoying. Yes we get it. People don't age with grace, people can fall off, doubt, regret, all that shit is fine. But I'm not watching an Indy film to see the heroic character I've come to love get his balls kicked in for 2 hours. I didn't like it with Luke, I didnt like it with Joel. Not every character has to be broken down, not every idea has to be subverted. Sometimes and I know this is hard, but SOMETIMES I just want a god damn sequel with a god damn character I like doing god damn fun in character things.
It was amazing tho, it had an explanation that made sense using the overall lore in the movie for the artifact, no plot holes, even when the ending is bizzare af, it’s still relative and makes sense with the movie
@@LordodragonssAll of the character development leading up to that point was completely ignored. While I think Indy's quiet retirement with his wife is... fine I guess, every other character seems to just forget every motive they had up to that point. Wombat has an ego death for absolutley no reason after spending the entire movie being motivated by money alone. it was like they got to the part where they meet archimedes and then realized they only had 5 minutes of screentime left and rushed the ending
crystal skull is actually my favorite movie of the series and one that means a lot to me since it's the one me and my grandpa would watch together, Still not so sure why it's so hated.
Not only survives it, but survives it without a single scratch! I thought when they revealed he was alive he’d have at least a nasty disfigured face from that event, but no he’s perfectly in tact and healthy.
@@EstusFlasked It’s surprising that almost nobody talks about that There were a ton of ways they could have gotten him to fall off the train and potentially survive without resorting to something that’s arguably more fatal than his actual death
Trains only go about 50 mph and probably slower in the 1940s because of the limitations of steam locomotives. The part of the water tower he struck is not a fixed piece, it's a boom flexibly attached to the tower, so it would have given way somewhat. It's definitely survivable. He would have broken a LOT of bones, but he has 20 years to recover between that scene and when we next see him.
Then Nathan Drake was translated so poorly in hollywood that even Tom Holland was like "my bad". All he had to do was be lighthearted and witty, which you'd think he has plenty of experience with, but instead he said he focused more on making his biceps pop.
I actually saw a marathon of the Indiana Jones movies on the Paramount channel while in Vegas with my dad. I really felt DoD was just a 2hr 45min compilation of Jones being bullied on all fronts and I wasn’t a fan of it LOL
It felt like they just used Indy as a step to get PWB the spotlight...but her character didn't deserve it at all. We're supposed to root for her but the character is a terrible person. But like...why make Indy in such a bad way? He's supposed to be the hero, not the punching bag.
@@blackjackjesterBecause the entire point of these new movies is to change the male lead to a female and then continuously ridicule the male the entire movie.

The other only takes a desire to make a product. Which do you think cheapskate suits will go with??? The expensive, risky option, or the cheap one that only more astute customers would even directly notice?
Tbh I didn’t think the ending was that bad, at least compared to how wild the ending of every Indiana Jones movie gets like opening a box that literally contains god.
I love Indiana Jones...awesome character! I'll never forget leaving the theater after Raiders of the Lost Ark knowing that I had just seen something special, something inspiring. Wasn't blown away by Tempe of Doom but loved the ending, and for me Last Crusade was a return to form...loved it almost as much as the original. I was stoked like a bonfire to see Crystal Skull and tbh it got off to a good start. Wheels began to come off with LeBouf swinging through the treetops and the ending left me flat. I would really like to see DoD because I love the character so much, but with the personnel currently in charge of story and lore I'm not certain my heart can bear to see it
It's really not bad. There were some cool nods to the previous movies and the Nazi plot line had a similar vibe to Last Crusade. If you're a casual fan, you'll like it. If you're cynical and desperate to tear it apart, you won't. Simple as that.
@@SirBoomNPew not really qualified to tear it apart, nor do I wish to...haven't seen it yet. Like I said, love Indiana Jones...just don't trust the current team in charge of the franchise. They've shown their ineptitude in multiple instances

I thought Dial of Destiny was a solid final entry in the Indiana Jones series. Probably 3rd or 4th best Indy film (contending with Temple of Doom for the #3 spot).
3:04 I'm about to see this movie today, and I gotta say: John Williams is THE MAN! He is my absolute favorite composer of all time, and almost everything he does is an absolute banger!
My favorite part of the movie is probably the entire Plane section/time travel because it’s actually really good man my heart was beating the entire time because it was so engaging Indiana dropping the bomb that Archimedes didn’t know about continental drift Voller beginning to have second thoughts, and as the pilots countdown to enter the portal tensions rise it has genuinely good acting from of course Ford and Mikkelsen then when they enter the portal and see Cicely they think that it actually worked but then the clouds get out of the way and you see the old architecture of the town then Roman battleships it’s genuinely a good scene the Romans thinking that they are dragons as they fire ballistas and it’s just so cool I enjoyed it But yeah the first 20 minutes were amazing it was classic Indiana Jones everyone liked the CGI on Ford was really good too but than one of my gripes how on earth did Voller survive that pole to the face and even if he could survive, how was there no sign of injury years later, would’ve thought there would be a huge gash or scar or any indication that he got hit by it, just lazy writing right there
I agree with what you said on the time travel and I found the paradox with Archimedes and Voller with the watch, propellers, and dial really cool. I do think it was kind of lazy how Voller survived that hit to the face though. If someone were to survive that, they would have HUGE brain damage to the point where they should basically be considered dead. He should of at least had some appearance of injury.
Or instead of being hit in the head by the sign, maybe he could’ve been hit in the head by the gun Basil saved Indy with and then Voller would fall off the train. That could MAYBE solve that plot hole.
The movie has really great scenes sometimes, the plane, the horse on the train tracks, Indy mourning his son, but it's just that, really cool scenes in a lazy written, undercooked movie.
@@adonailr9667 Couldn't have said it better myself. I don't hate Dial of Destiny but my opinions are mixed. It's a solid 6/10 movie for me; has the potential that could have been tapped into more.
Yeah, the middle portion of the movie was kind of hit or miss for me depending on the scene but the beginning and ending were sick. There are very few things I love in a movie like a good 'oh fuck' moment from a villain when they realize too late that they've royally screwed up. The Indiana Jones movies always deliver, and the extended reaction we get from Mikkelson throughout the entire climax might be my favorite one of all. Mikkelson's character in general is probably my favorite villain from the series.
When you say you giggled at the end I don't know if you're talkin about the last shot or not but how it closes out like a Looney Tunes cartoon had me rolling
It also seemed to lack the near death close calls. Aside from the opening, every time he was in danger of death it was on the whim of a guy with a gun who didn't even want him dead yet rather than a trap to solve or a crashing plane to escape
As an Indiana Jones fan for many years, I wasn't expecting a masterpiece, especially after Crystal Skull, I came more for the cameos and the actors I loved more than anything. Nothing bad to say about the movie, I'd rather people watch and judge themselves. It was a fun experience
I always enjoyed Indiana Jones movies because how cool it is to mix history and adventure as well as action and the last two movies even tho they were more based on action felt great to me. Its more humoritic because... Disney but it's still largely enjoyable. It felt great to see Harrison Ford but it's a shame the son of Jones just died during war. How the son of Jones just die
I never got the backlash Kingdom of the Crystal Skull got. It has the same vibe, developed Indy as a character, and it’s certainly no less silly and unrealistic as the last ones. I think religious people just got offended by it. Only downsides to it is that Indiana is older and not hot anymore.
I just saw it and I'd probably give it a 70-80. Its a good sendoff for everyone involved and even if it was off in a lot of places, I felt like it was still fun.
I watched it with my girlfriend because she’s a huge fan of Indiana Jones and I’m a sorta fan. The theater was EMPTY other than us lol. The best part of the movie was when we decided to make out in the empty theater through the second third💀
South Park once joked that Indy was assaulted with the Crystal Skull. This film was like digging up his grave and parading his corpse with a mickey mouse hat
About his friend dying, the same exact thing happens in Temple of doom where one of his friends, a kid even gets shot because he was playing hardball with the gangsters and it’s never mentioned after that and people make jokes right after
I am so sick of writers/producers/directors who don’t give a crap about the source material absolutely running poplar franchises into the ground. If you don’t like something, leave it TF alone.
And im kind of sick of Moists biases even tho I have loved him for years and been neutral over some bad takes. I know he tries to be apolitical and all, but this movie has nothing good in it, he says it himself but has the gall to give it 60%. As soon as it has some socialist speech in it like "thats capitalism" when it comes to stealing, Charlie gives it automatically 10% more, while a movie with similar action, but realistic world like Sound of Freedom automatically becomes "meh" and gets like 50%. He reports far more on some insane maga hat guys that got drunk in public over a democrat driving over a 17yr old for POSSIBLY having a maga hat (it was a red hat, the nad admitted it all to police). Idk what it is but apolitical or centrists try to Act enlightened all the time even tho insanity on one side is clearly bigger to the point the whole Europe has to combat american social media leaking over there. I have plenty of insane mage people myself and am a center-liberal myself by my countries standards, but holy fuck the left is batshit insane in america.

i saw kingdom of the crystal skull with my grandpa in 2008 and that day is one of my favorite memories. maybe i'm blinded by nostalgia, but i dont get what's so bad about kingdom of the crystal skull. I think it's far better than temple of doom.
Hey Charlie, congrats on getting another comic out there. Have you heard of Dark Doctor Ikuru? it's a manga series that started serialization like half a year ago or so and the premise is very similar to Plagueseeker.
This movie was my first Indiana jones movie and I loved it. I actually liked how there wasn't any emotional impact in any of the scenes because it meant that I could just relax and not have to stress about all the different characters.
You have to watch the other 4. If you liked this one (which is ok I did too) you will fall in love with the first 3. Even Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is better than it gets credit for. It has its moments, but expectations at the time were far too high.
As a die hard Indy fan I loved it. Watching it with my dad was an awesome experience, it’s not perfect like the trilogy but I was just happy for another adventure:)

I don't like how the ending for this movie never explained how he was unframed from murder and a character that has been missing from Indy's life conveniently returns because 'the old Indy is back'. Everything after that cut to black gag felt like they didn't know how to end the movie at all so they tried to give as much fanservice to finish it up.
Tbh it doesn't make any sense to make an Indiana Jones movie with an old Indiana Jones. He drinks from the Holy Grail at the end of The Last Crusade, and, if memory serves right, the Grail is said to grant eternal life. If Indy now has eternal life, he should look the same now as he did in The Last Crusade.
I love the part where Indiana Jones says "Let's dial up this destiny a little bit" and the entire audience explodes with the combined power of 30 tons of trinitrotoluene.
I for one really liked the movie. It was fun to watch the plot unfold and the race against time. I also liked the beginning scene alot. I agree with the unnecessarily long chase scene, but even that was fun to watch. The only thing I didn't see a lot of point in the german scientist and his crew shooting a bunch of people for not a whole lot of reason.
i laughed so fucking hard when they said shoot the dragons lmao it was so goofy but i loved it to be honest. dont even know if they meant that scene to be funny
I gotta say, the only movie I am looking forward to right now is mission impossible 7. They’ve managed to keep it good. Tom Cruise killed it in Top Gun 2
Me watching this review before watching the movies and stopping where he says “major spoilers” as to not get spoiled, but overhearing the part about one of Indie’s friends dying. I legit thought Sallah was gonna die going into this because of this review.
I just saw it in 4DX and it was one of the best moviegoing experiences I ever had. I went in with rockbottom expectations after the initial reactions but I was blown away. I was seriously mouthing "oh shit" multiple times. I didn't do a lot of research before this movie so the whole time travel thing took me completely by surprise, I was really trying to figure out how they would get out of that situation. I was literally (thanks to the moving chairs) on the edge of my seat. Am I on a buzz high right now? Mayhaps, it will probably change when I see it again later down the road, or not. I just know that, for now, I highly enjoyed this movie. People literally applauded at the end of the movie. The only people I've seen complain are internet trolls who haven't touched grass in years in their drafty parent's basement, the general audience who, yknow, don't dissect these movies like frogs and just enjoy them for what they are, are the ones who count. Everyone needs to take a breather and realise: it's just a movie in a franchise that has had saturday morning cartoon nazi's, zombie knights, aliens and weird cults, it's not that deep. But god forbid you like a movie just for what it is, or you're "paid" by Disney lmao.
Dude same I went with my girl and her family and also seen it in 4DX at Regal owned Warren Theater. At the end we all clapped as well as the theater. I loved it!!!
I love reading this, I felt the same way, I genuinely left the theater elated that it was such a *fun god damn movie* , and despite everyone and their mother screaming “ah Disney ruins everything and it’s terrible (but also please don’t look at the fact that the movie is at 80% positively rated by audiences)”, them being all proven wrong and the fact that it was genuinely, a fun adventure movie, an amazing return to the franchise I’ve loved since I was a kid, just made me so fucking *happy* . Why so many people think it’s “cool” to hate things I will never understand. It’s a shame that being upset by media created to make you happy isn’t even seen as a bad thing anymore. I genuinely pity these people, not in a patronizing way, but it just seems like such a… such a miserable way to go about life.
I wish in the last half of your moist meters you would do a spoiler section. I don’t plan to watch this but would like to know what they fail to execute on
