"Soccer" as a word (as well as the game) originates in England. It was a contraction of "Association rules football". The word died in England and the commonwealth but survives in America. American football was rugby and had the rugby rule that blockers must not run ahead of the ball carrier. Americans persistently cheated on the rule saying, "I don't have eyes in the back of my head." Finally there was a season in which 2 college players were killed. The President, Theodore Roosevelt, who was himself a big fan of fitness and weightlifting, called the coaches to the White House and demanded new rules. One that was tried a rule that the quarterback had to move 5 yards right or left before crossing the line of scrimmage. Because at that time it was 5 yards for a first down the field had chalk lines marking it off like a grid iron. That's why in American slang the football field is sometimes called the "grid iron". The solution was the forward pass. A physics professor asked a player if he could spin the ball as he threw and found it was easy. After that the rugby ball flew like a bullet.

These sorts of plays happen all the time in American football. The real excitement comes from being able to hear the action and feel the impact of men weighing more than 300 pounds and wearing armor slamming into each other at high speeds. This is a game where most players rarely survive more than 6 or 7 seasons. By the time they get a chance at the pro league they have been playing football since Pee Wee leagues (about 7 years old). All of that impact gets harder as they move up to Secondary school, and college. It is brutal. And it is the most challenging thing I have ever done. I loved the game even when my time to play came to an end.

If they lose the ball, before they cross the goal line it's a fumble. If they've already crossed the goal line, it's a touchdown which is worth 6 points. BTW, Americans didn't invent the word soccer. The formal name for soccer is Association Football, the British created the word as an abbreviation for Association. All the football codes descend from Medieval football, which had varying rules, many of which allowed the use of hands to some degree. Countries that have a more popular form of football, such as Gridiron Football in both the U.S. and Canada likely call the more popular code football, and the Association code soccer. Association just happens to be more popular on a global bases than other codes like Irish, Australian, Gridiron, and Rugby.

These guys have been playing since they are 6yrs old. There’s 20 thousand plus players in college football. Maybe 100make it into the nfl every year. Best of the best
