I was OPFOR and Mechondo cadre at North Ft. Hood for 3 months. My 1st C.O. was Mike Force in VeetNyam. His favorite ambush tactic at night was hand grenades followed by react to the enemy reaction. The bad guys most often would go to ground since they weren't sure what just hit them.

My co worker and I were just talking about his grandfather's service in Vietnam. He had a new CO who was all pumped up to take his platoon down a trail to attack an enemy position. My buddies grandfather refused to go citing the issues the trail could present. The CO said he was going to reprimand him for his refusal and continued down the trail. Long story short, that CO never got to file those reprimand papers, and only my co workers grandfather and one other survived. Lesson I learned from that, attackers like to capitalize on human laziness, and trails are kill zones.

the biggest mistake of the American army during the Vietnam War, there are several factors, first, the US military is too serious for a war where the real enemy, they are farmers, in the situation poverty, propaganda of heroic communist awareness, ... to this day the concept of socialism is still very vague, statements like parrot practicing speaking without understanding and understanding themselves. what, say so many things that do then dodged, the disease is always emulating 100% good performance, no one is bad, no one opposes ..... a lie ..... weak The second factor, Americans do not see clearly Vietnam, a country with a culture close to China, although it has been a French colony for 100 years but China's influence is great.
@peaceful8691
@peaceful8691 4 года назад
Vietnamese literature has a saying, a small piece when hungry, with a whole packet of a bag when full, ..... they live in poverty .... someone will help them what they eat, what to wear, what to study ... good for them at the beginning, they just later said that they are very easy to follow ..... and they are grateful to that person ..... there are things that cannot be compensated. cover when losing .... even the United States would give their country to them, they would not .... so America was caught up in a stream of a harmless river being misunderstood in vain. .......... America just needs to use economic aid, food, medicine ... to teach children ..... a soft power policy decision .. ... later in 1979, China stepped on the footsteps of the United States, when Vietnam was weaker, the army, and the navy in the East Sea were shot but not resisted. i only have arms and run away ..... that makes Vietnam today, inside the mind of the whole people .... is very hateful of China, that hatred is like the fire that we burn of ... burning, burning and burning forever, there is a catalyst that can explode alive ... everything around them recklessly .....
@peaceful8691
@peaceful8691 4 года назад
the third factor is that the American troops and allies are just over half a million, the communist regular army through the French trained more than 20,000 ... the remaining is to mobilize the entire population nearly 15 millions of people, young people, young girls, young people, depending on their strength .... to grow rice, to cultivate soldiers, to take care of small children growing up every day, to wait for the age of 17 to participate in military training teams .... women are assigned the work of communication, clearing roads, clearing mine and UXO engineers, composing arts, liking the military culture ..... some of the old people were local soldiers. Phuong, maintaining order and security .... No one does not join the army .... So only half a million US troops and allies fight with nearly 15 million people ... join together. .......
@peaceful8691
@peaceful8691 4 года назад
.... instead of bringing weapons of tanks and guns to Vietnam ..... it only takes a few cargo ships worth only a few tanks or planes ..... including old clothes, children, necessities, rice and flour. , milk, butter, cheese, chocolate ... school books .... drop it down in the North of Vietnam ..... just drop it a few times .... they won't watch Americans enemies ... but they started making friends, shaking hands with the Americans already ... effective immediately ....... before a military attack ... give logistics vehicles for rice, rice, food, running first ... confectionery, vodka, whiskey ..... using loudspeakers .... to sing songs about the homeland family, wife and children ....... make sure the thoughts of the soldiers will be shaken, they will wonder ..... what are they in this hell place ..... where they live far away from their homeland, their wives and children, ... there are many soldiers who go to fight but the gun is not the most important thing for them .... the most important is a picture, a painting. ... celebrate people family members ..... they were thrown into the battlefield because of political propaganda ..... like a cow running along a bunch of grass, but not necessarily that it wanted to crash everything in front of it. ...... ..... There is one cultural element of habit .... is Vietnamese .... life without profound knowledge ... so there is something strange, new ... that they are very curious ..... today the US president comes to Vietnam ... almost everyone is very excited .... they quit some personal activities .... going to the street waving, trying to see. the president's car passed even after waiting for hours ..... very curious and excited to be connected to explore the world ....., .... a burglary case, or murder .... the scene of the scene, there are only more than 10 policemen ... around there can be more than 2000 people flocking to watch, very attentive ..... rather than going to school knowledge ... recently there was a wanted criminal fleeing in a jungle area with AK 47 guns .... when the media reported ..... sợ fear .... from all over Vietnam dragged to the edge of the forest .... looking forward, curious to see how the police surrounded, fought with wanted criminals ... they wanted to see Like a live soccer match ..... everyone was excited, excited ... not showing any fear ... like a child who doesn't know anything. .. The VC were communists who went on to murder tons of people to gain and maintain a hold on Vietnam. 3. We would’ve succeeded and kept Vietnam free if congress hadn’t interfered in something that was the President’s job, but instead many good people died for no reason along with a bunch of VC who often terrorized their own people.

In the Army I've always been taught to immediately get on line and assault through a near ambush. Not to get down and throw hand grenades. This is the first time I've heard that tbh. I prefer this method to reacting to a near ambush. Its quick, violent, and greatly increases your chances of survival, if you stop or pause to fumble with some hand grenades you're gonna get smoked.

Thanks for commenting brother. That's interesting. I have seen in an Army FM where it said something like if cover is not available then immediately initiate" just like in the Marine Corps pub. Good stuff brother! Thank you and your team for taking the time to do this. I remember having to do those COA sketches in excel. First thing I thought of when I saw the title to the video was how quickly members in your squad can be combat ineffective against an enemy ambush if there is a cas. Depending on your force size. Since our task was mostly movement until contact it can be rather spicy!

One note, when looking for cover in terrain features like the depression, you could still stand a chance Mr Charles would have thought of it first and placed a surprise in it for you. If it looks to good to be true, it just might be. All this is frequently happening in fast motion with unimaginable sounds. Also, when getting into place for an ambush, see if you have a moment to improve your position so the opposition doesn't see a shape that looks familiar (like a head, helmet, MG, bright hand with weapon in front of a bush, etc.). Great video. Semper Fi

Great guide with sound tactical advice, as always. Thanks for putting this out the for free to The People 8:11 That reminds me of one of my favorite moments in an old CoD game for original XboX, playing the Red Army. Fresh off the boats crossing the Volga and armed right at the harbor, you start moving to the attack and from behind the commissar shouts "Cowards and traitors will be shot!" and walks up the line herding people (half of whom got rifles, half of whom got clips for a Mosin-Nagant, you got a clip - probably live longer!) uphill towards the Germans. If you fall behind, the commissar will give the player a game over with his Tokarev, which I approve of. The NPC you first meet behind some cover has just told you a plan to flank the machine guns, as the commissar comes close. He says "Hold on, comrade, I have to take care of the commissar first" and just casually snipes him at close range, then says "follow me" and you proceed to flank the machine gun, and the game goes on. It was a bad game, but I loved that part... "I vote we frag this commander."-StarCraft Marine

The Army infantry platoon and squad operations pamphlet AR 7-8 has react to contact as it's second battle drill. Squad/platoon attack is battle drill #1. Obviously you want to know what you are doing before reacting to contact. However it always, still to this day, as counterintuitive. Crossing a linear danger as you explained it was good. Though I would have added crossing with a crew served weapon as many leaders make the mistake of not protecting the gun and thinking that it can perform the same movements as riflemen. The react to a near ambush in the Army is like you said. We throw frags and then assault but I always disagreed with that. Though we used the SDR rule... Suppress, Deploy, Report for any contact. I taught my guys to report through suppression instead of yelling out the three D's... Direction, Distance, Description. My thought process was I could follow a team leaders tracer rounds to the objective/enemy and quickly be assertane the enemies position and composition based upon the fire we would be taking. Using the MDMP and 3-1 rule to either assault through a LPOP or hasty small team ambush or to bring the squad generally abreast and become a support by fire element while calling the platoon leader up with the 240Bs to bring the hate. I would attack a four man fire team if they were in a hasty attack or ambush but would hesitate to attempt to fight through a dug in enemy.

Man, make sure you teach the radioman yelling a “20 contact, (leg no.), wait out” automatically, otherwise nobody knows what happens in hq. no calvary will show up when the shtf. Here is our discussion on immediate action. I would say it can be summarize in Spraying Decisions Flanking Spraying An eye for an eye, spray them back, every unit have their own drills, it is not up to me to say which one is better, but one thing is always right, return fire, gain the most important 1 minute. Everyone shoot at gun smoke on the opposite side, except 2 person, the commander and radioman, they have their own job Decisions The mighty no brain officer had to decide whether it is a fight or flee in seconds, there is no right or wrong of this decision either way, because nobody knows and nobody have no information, therefore nobody shall be blame. The only thing a mighty no brain officer get blame is to make no decision. Flanking Usually the 2ic will be in the end of the patrol, there are only 2 choices, flanking drill or withdraw drill, as soon as he heard the yelling from the commander, do it! There's only 1 thing to consider, this is an ambush, you are already bunch up in column and pin down at the front, don't you think your enemy will let you have a nice easy day? Cutoff party, mines, rpg, mg post, you name it. They are all waiting for you in the most convenient access path. What are you going to do? I would say, an anti ambush drill is one of the most important drill for any 2ic to handle. Mvp pf the day.

Can't speak for marines, but as an army grunt i think that popping smoke affords you that moment to assess, establish a volume of fire which are key to making an effective response. For example, in my limited deployment experience(1 pump chump), the Taliban would lace i.e.d's in the dead-space between their ambush position and the kill zone- so bounding became quite the task because they were effectively maiming or killing our dudes. The ttp then became: always patrol with overwatch (usually a sniper and a handheld 60mm mortarman), pop smoke and hold in place until we can drop ordinance...the unlucky suckers in the killzone basically just become support by fire.
