The way I took the whole "Thanos actually loves Gamora" thing (because I still refuse to believe there's anything good about their relationship) is that he genuinely 100% thinks he loves her and thinks he is doing his best with their relationship. The thing about abusive people is that the way they act is the only way they know how to "love" others. It's not actual love, it's not caring or nurturing or uplifting, but it's the only way Thanos knows how to love - cruelly, violently, delusionally. I mean just look at the way he's trying to solve the whole "overpopulation" problem. He genuinely thinks he's doing the right thing when it's absolutely the most cruel way to go about it. Same goes for his relationship with Gamora.

@@aidanzimmerman tony had pretty good arcs throughout and you could argue that caps arc all along was he was a man out of his time. no matter how much he tried to adjust, no matter what mission he took part in, he wasnt where he belonged. thor doesnt have like any development and it seems like the one he did have in ragnorok was really undone by the end of endgame. got his hair back, hamaxe, and eye. the whole gomora and peter storyline was rushed and missed a lot of points that shouldve been brought up in the stand alone gatg 3 film like peter coming back to earth or his and gamoras romance. they never kissed in the gtag films for a reason. in 2 they realized theyre both really messed up people who cant get into a relationship right now. in iw though they kiss, she says she loves him and all that gamora build up is gone when he chucked her off a cliff. worst mistake of the two films

I think Marvel does a pretty good job of exploring difficult parent-child relationships, especially in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. @oof-rr5nf

@@SpeenatchAndCheese that is how I read it as well. I am all for films exploring complicated family dynamics, but Infinity War gave me this weird feeling in my stomach because it made me feel like it was trying to say that he hurt her, he abused her, he took her entire family from her and destroyed her home and forced her to kill her siblings but he loved her so it is _understandable._ Idk. They should have spent more time, or explained it in a better way. Atleast that is how I feel. Of course I understand that abusive parents can still love you, but the message was kinda muddled. @FreshlyBakedLePain i didn’t say anything about insanity, and azula’s mental state doesn’t really have anything to do with her motivations. she’s cruel and selfish because she was raised to be that way, and she breaks down when she loses because she bought into the propaganda that she’s unbeatable and deserves to rule the world. the point of thanos’s motivation is not that he’s right, it’s just that it makes sense in his own head and he’s not just evil for the hell of it. he was already doing the genocides before he decided to go after the infinity gauntlet. his mission statement for decades or who knows how long was “kill half of everybody”. he didn’t think it through further than “this will let you do that more easily”. a character making a decision that you disagree with is not a plot hole. the movie explains his own reason for making that decision and clearly positions him as being in the wrong

peachjedi That’s sort of the point, though. Thanos is a giant middle finger to practically everything having to do with the Avengers. He breaks the rules of the universe, both canonically and thematically. In Thor: Ragnarok, Thor learns that he is not the god of hammers, that losing his eye ironically gave him even more perspective, and that Asgard is a people, not a place. But Thanos comes around, and suddenly Thor needs an EVEN BIGGER hammer, gets a robot eye, and now at least half of the people of Asgard are dead. Hell, Star Lord’s entire character arc and ethos are made totally invalid by Thanos. He keeps Peter from murdering Gamora and stopping him from getting the Soul Stone, murders Gamora anyway to get the Soul Stone, and then gets him to lash out recklessly, (something that has become Starlord’s de facto superpower) which results in the death of half of everybody. Thanos don’t give a fuck.

Schalk Coetzee 1. no evidence that the gauntlet can do that. 2. Who’s to say that resurrecting Gamorah wouldn’t lose him the soul stone?
@Schalk-Coetzee
@Schalk-Coetzee 6 лет назад
Lord Parbr - 1) Ignoring the soul stone, The time stone can change the past without affecting the holder. It has been shown to do so many times. This means he stays unaffected while time bends around him - thus going back to before she died, while still remaining his 'present self' with the stone. 2) I will ignore the fact that you are the one playing with hypotheticals here - and make another point. He clearly does not know anything about the stone. This was proven when he did not know of the test, where it was, or how to get it untill it was shown to him. Since he actually loved her according to the movie, it would make sense for him to at least try to get her back. He has no reason to think it would be taken back if he brings her back. Especially when done so with another stone. The fact that he does not even try means he never intended to bring her back, even if he had the power. It called into question the validity of him even having the stone.
@PatheticApathetic
@PatheticApathetic 6 лет назад
Schalk Coetzee 1. If he used the time stone to bring her back, that likely would have undone the entire trade. After all, the soul stone wasn’t using the time stone, Thanos was. So there’s no telling whether the soul stone would have been affected by Thanos’s reversing time. 2. The whole point of the soul stone scene was that Thanos believed that his task was more important than his own desires. It wasn’t something he wanted to do, it was something he thought he *needed* to do. As he had no reason to think that the obviously magical protection around the soul stone could be cheated, he wasn’t going to jeopardize it to save 1 person, no matter how important to him she may have been. Especially given that the stones don’t make him omniscient, so there’s no way he could choose who was going to die when he snapped his fingers. It was entirely possible that he would risk losing one of the stones to bring her back when Gamora was just going to die again anyway at the finger snap 3. Thanos’s main character flaw is that he’s myopic. He’s obsessively focused on his goal of wiping out half the life in the universe. It probably never occurred to him that the gauntlet might be able to bring her back
@Schalk-Coetzee
@Schalk-Coetzee 6 лет назад
Lord Parbr - 1) The stones have the power to affect one another and are subject to the laws the others govern over i.e. the mind stone being restored after being broken. Based on how the time stone has been used - the user can make themselves immune to the effects of time moving forwards or backwards - as well as immune to changes made in the past. So the soul stone is affected by the time stone, and is subject to its power like the mind stone was - and thus would not be able to escape that change. That is using in-universe logic. You are providing a hypothetical, and using that to justify a plot hole. 2) You are saying that he has no power over who lives and who dies, but he clearly stated that only half of each planet would be taken. Not half the universe - otherwise it might kill 100% of some planets and 0% of others. If he has the ability to not only single out every planet within the entirety of reality - including the ones he did not know about - and then kill off a perfect half of them on random, then he must have far more control over the action than you are suggesting. This is not a set power of the glove. It is not a built-in switch. The act is bound to his will. He determined the parameters. 2.1) Even if he felt he needed to, and might not have wanted to, the stone validated what he did. The stone is presented as being wise, and that it's protections are magical and complex to test the wannabe user - yet gives itself over to the person who intends to destroy half of all life. If the stone's defences are so nuanced and complex why does it not account for that? If the stone can't be cheated, but it also can't determine between right and wrong - then what was the fucking point of the test in the first place? 3) He is shown to spend ages doing nothing. He is shown taking no initiative of his own but waiting, scheming, and generally being inactive. Considering how fast he actually managed to get them on his own - the idea that he is singularly focussed on the task, and has been forever is absurd. He is presented as a brilliant madman that spends decades destroying and recruiting an army, a wealth of technology, resources and 'parenting' - only now suddenly he can't use the gauntlet to its full power. The gauntlet which he obsessed over for how long, the stones that supposedly only he can wield effectively. Years of planning and research and now suddenly he forgets what they are capable of? He can't be entirely focused on one thing, and do literally anything else for forever - and then when actually acting on the one thing he was supposedly focussed on - suddenly become inept. That is inconsistent.

I think it's a paradox to get the soul stone. If you have to sacrifice the thing/person you love the most, and you're actually willing to do it to gain power, you don't really love that person anyways. If you truly did you wouldn't be willing to sacrifice them for a magical stone. Edit: it’s of course different with Hawkeye and black widow, cause they were only willing to do it because they wanted to save the lives of billions of other people, not because they wanted anything nefarious out of it. Ya know how in Harry Potter, only someone with the desire to find the philosopher’s stone without using it to live forever or become rich, can get it. It should have been set up so that if your intentions are to use the soul stone to kill half of existence (consequently making all of existence depressed), you shouldn’t be able to get it.

It's basically him finding a really lazy and bad "solution" to a problem on one planet and then apllying it to all the others without even knowing anyting about them or thinking about the possible differences for a millisecond. I mean if we look at earth there are several things we notice right away: 1) overpopulation is not the problem, bad distrubution and imperial colonisalist greed are the reason for people starving and for most wars. if you take away half the population, the power will still be in the same peoples hands and they will keep exploiting the others. 2) if you take away half the popultation, literally everything breaks apart. it's extremely naive to think that it's all just about material resources which we just don't have enough of, when in reality our wealth comes from competant work forces reproducing it constantly. imagine how quickly the global economy would fall apart, if suddenly half the people die. imagine the chaos and the political reaction to it.

@@Johncornwell103 So your theory is that the shared grieve would bring humanity closer together? What makes you assume that would be the case? If we look at history, we can see a clear pattern: trauma, economic crisis and destabilization lead to fascism, war and madness. Look up the history of the Weimar Republic and how it turned into Nazi Germany. The humilition of losing the first world war and the allies taking away core regions of germany and austria alongside economic bondage were the slight to the german identity that Hitler exploited and the economic crisis of the 30ies was the source of desperation that really drove the Nazis rise to power forward. After the second world war the allies rebuilt Germany and Austria and basically forgave them their crimes accepting them as economic and political partners, which lead to them becoming two of the most stable and rich democracies on the planet. If we look at the profile of psychopaths and criminals it is often great trauma that lies at the core of their mental illness. Child abusers for example often got abused themselves. From what I see, trauma and grievence almost always lead to their own circular reproduction and are seldom a great recipe for things getting better. Oh and also: Sry for "bitching" about starving children, modern day slavery and senseless exploitative wars killing millions of innocent people. Also: What about climate change? A problem that could literally cause the planet becoming hostile to uninhabitable for the human race. One would think people would rally around that cause pretty quickly, but that's not whats happening at all. Also: 9/11 lead to the Iraq war, killing over a hundred thousand civilians, probably leading to increased terrorism which lead to increased destabizisation of the US. Also the patriot act was a response to 9/11, taking away civil rights and shifting the US towards a police state. Really one could argue, that all 9/11 did was causing a hysteria which allowed imperialist polititions to exploit and have the people on board for actions that would in the long run further contribute to their own destruction (not to mention the sorrow of many innocent people outside the us) Edit: A few more points that came to my mind: 1) Many people are unaware that the stated goal of Osama Bin Laden was to draw the US into so many wars that they would collapse under their weight. He thought (rightfully) that this attack would perpetuate a circle of violence and lead to inner destabilization. So the unifying trauma of 9/11 made people, blinded by their rage, literally do exactly what the terrorists wanted them to 2) You are saying the new alliance might last centuries, but look at the US right now. One could very reasonably argue, that the consequences of 9/11 are a main factor in the current unpresidented division amongst the american people, the looming threat of democracy fully ending or even outright civil war.

Sure, you know that from a meta standpoint (the fact there's time magic, franchise obligations, etc) they'd never stay dead, but people don't wanna see these characters go through that, or see the survivors deal with that kind of scenario. It's emotionally engaging because the actors sell the hell out of it and we care about the characters. Like yeah, as fans most of us know it's almost certainly not gonna be permanent, but that doesn't mean seeing them die isn't gonna be affecting.

I don't understand how it's supposed to be criticism. Either it's okay to have an emotional reaction to fiction, or it's not. There is no in between. I don't, but I don't get emotional over fiction. I watch to see how things play out. But that's me.

I absolutely loved the ending. It sold the entire movie for me. They could have ended it with an inspirational and cheesy speech full of hope and optimism e.g by Capt. America, setting up the the sequel. But instead the final shot of the movie is when Thanos is sitting on a hill, facing the camera and he smiles into the Sun. Happy and content with himself. Great Ending.

Sebastian Koil I'm guessing Chthon had the mind stone in the past and knew how to destroy it, and his nephew Agamotto had the Time Stone given to Chthon's slightly less intelligent sister Oshtur. We know Wanda ain't powered by the mind stone because she still had powers after she destroyed it, and because Kevin Feige said so. She's converting Chthonic magic (which Strange doesn't know anything about) into telekinesis.

Oh, that ending. I thought you meant the ending where all of these superheroes die and we're supposed to think that Marvel is daring to kill off all of these main characters even though we know that they are just going to come back to make more gratuitous action movies. But, no, you meant the VERY ending. That sold it for you? Was that the point at which you were convinced that his stupid reason for destroying half of all the life in the universe actually made sense?
@Mike_C-79
@Mike_C-79 6 лет назад
First off, it doesn't matter that the characters don't know that the dead will come back. I don't see how it can resonate with the audience, as it seems to have. I'm just saying that it's portrayed as if the writers are being bold by killing these characters off and trying to surprise people, but it's pointless when you know everything will be fine for Spidy and Black Panther, etc. I understand Thanos' reason for what he did. It is still stupid that he was convinced that he should do it. I can see that he might want to do that for his own planet, but the whole universe? Every planet and every sentient being is heading towards the same inevitable disaster? How does he even know this, and again, why does he care? It's not even remotely compelling, even from a psychopath's perspective. We still don't understand his motivation. That's different from his reason. Was there some kind of traumatic event that he experienced that led him to this, or is he just your run of the mill philanthropist? In the end, invincible villains are completely uninteresting, so who cares what his actual motives are?
@dobfeldman5026
@dobfeldman5026 6 лет назад
Marley James you make good points. As you acknowledge, people bought that thanos believed his own motivation, and they bought that spiderman believed he was dying. It's hard to do better than that, so maybe you just like serious nuanced movies for adults and not Marvel

I knew it was going to be okay, but I was still shook out of my mind seeing the tragedy and the saddness around people losing so many loved ones. Spiderman's death was really rough; Okoye's screams were heavy, Bucky saying "Steve" as he faded, and Cap's exhausted, distressed, and lost "...Oh god." all have imprinted themselves in my mind as utter tragedy. Yeah, we know the people will come back, but they don't. I definitely gasped.

@jerner17
@jerner17 6 лет назад
I haven't put too much thought into this but couldn't that be bad. Like water is a resource and if you double it would that cause massive flooding. And an over population of animals and insects and so on. I guess you could increase the size of the planet but idk if that would have a negative effect on our gravity or some other cosmic shit. If you look at history for example the plague in Europe wiped out about half the population and from what I remember it was sort of a good thing because it helped the poor that were still alive get out of poverty because their craft became more valuable and nobility was also affected where it helped create a middle class for the first time

Thanos in the movie reminds me of religious barbarism. Like, they have a set of beliefs that don't really make any logical sense, and they commit atrocities in the name of those beliefs, and they 1000% believe they are good and righteous and doing the right thing. He even has his own little preacher guy...
@Jarnauga
@Jarnauga 6 лет назад
His believes do make some logical sense, but only on a single population. His planet was at the point where this was the only option left, and he could not do the necessary and no one was willing to do it. So afterwards he went out and took it upon himself to do the "necessary" to every population, which is obviously insane and does not make sense. But on a single planet it can sadly be what is the only option left. Some scientists have actually pointed that out a good while ago, that it would be the only option left for us to save humanity at some point, to kill a big part of the population, if we do continue our current path. So, that is most likely where they got the idea in the first place. Either that, or an old Star Trek episode from the original series called "Khodos".

It's happily drinking from a mug with a straw until 7:00, when Jenny just takes it away during the jump cut, and it just looks sad that it's drink was taken away for the rest of the video. Gotta admit, Spider-Man’s death was heart wrenching for me. Tom Holland deserves serious props for that scene, because he ripped my heart out. Even knowing a lot of these deaths will be reversed did not help. I loved Infinity War, and my theater was utterly silent by the time the movie ended. I’ve never been in a theater that felt so much like a funeral. I even saw this woman getting a comforting hug from her male partner after we exited the bathroom. People were really upset, and I was right there with them. It was kind of a cool experience in a way, just being so in the moment and sharing heartache with strangers. Still, always love your videos, even though I think Infinity War is my favorite Marvel movie so far.
