Innovation or Replication: What Leads to Success?

This question was floating around in my head for a number of weeks. I was curious about long-running video game series and the decisions that developers make with them. How do developers know when it's time to innovate? How many developers get away with selling virtually the same game time and time again?

Very interesting video, those charts are interesting but I have something to add to the Final Fantasy bit. I think the sales come from interest of the average consumer vs the avid fans who will play any game in the franchise, not to mention some of the earlier entries initially never came outside Japan or even the US. For example with Final Fantasy III it's a very popular and beloved entry in the series and sold the most during it's release back in the day as it launched alongside many other beloved Famicom RPG like Fire Emblem and Dragon Quest IV so it was part of a really hype period. In addition Final Fantasy always changed things up because that's something they like to do with every game as it was stated in an interview leading up to XVI's release, it's far more of an artistic decision than if it worked or not so the sales more reflect how many were interested in playing that rather than innovation. I think with Zelda it's the most interesting because one can make the argument that Breath of the Wild is the real return of the series to popularity since Ocarina of time because of the sales and how they got over the stagnation. It's also worth mentioning that gaming was a lot less popular and mainstream in the 80s and early 90s, it was a lot more of a niche hobby back then so the sales reflect some of that (less with Pokemon but that was a lightning in the bottle situation), so people weren't really hyper focused on innovating or stagnating when it comes to game design unless it's something groundbreaking.

FF3 did sell well initially, but the remarkable thing about it is that it outsold the other early games with its re-releases. The overseas market latched onto the game more than the Japanese market. Part of it could be timing, like with FF3 being the first DS release. I didn't note every detail about every game's different releases since the FF section was intended to be brief, but I'm curious to go back and look at the breakdown for Pixel Remaster sales too. Steam vs mobile also tells interesting stories about the games. Yeah, a takeaway is that gaming is definitely becoming more popular as the years go by. It'll be interesting to see where the hobby goes from here. I wonder if we'll see more mergers and acquisitions; if any new companies can break into the hardware market; which series will continue to sell well and which ones will stumble.

so many interesting charts here. you did some good research on making them. i agree with you on how some games copy others but still make it really good. i always thought that FF9 did not sell as well as the other around that time because it was released at the end of the PS1 life and PS2 was right around the corner and FFX was not far off so i would imagine peopled skipped it back then because they were hyped for the PS2. but FF8 being pulverizing does not help either. i can say that Majora's Mask sales could also be that you had to own the expansion pack to play it, me and a lot of other people i knew never had one back then so we could not even rent the game where OOT had no expansions needed

Thanks man! Yeah, there are a lot of things to wonder about. I tried looking for more concrete evidence/info on things like spending habits, but I wasn't impressed by some of the info that I found. Good point about the expansion pack for MM! That makes me think that a lot of people probably didn't want to play Skyward Sword because it needed different hardware (motion controls) than what was normal for Zelda. It really makes no sense for ZELDA to sell that little when the Wii was so popular.

@@TheLegendofLeo forgot about skyward sword needing the motion plus to play. although at least some versions of the game came with one.

Unless it's Painkiller, Innovate. Painkiller? Keep replicating it, it's perfect as it is... either that or leave it be, it's sacred. Pokemon died after XD Gale Of Darkness for me, Colosseum and XD was the innovation I wanted for the series... and they got abandoned in favor for replicating the older games, which were fun at the time but I got bored with the formula. Meanwhile Painkiller has 6 expansions and a remake, I played them all and enjoyed playing each one, the gameplay never gets old, what kept them fresh and interesting were the new levels added as well as new enemies and some new weapons. I don't think changing the formula was Final Fantasy's biggest problem, the biggest problem with Final Fantasy was the fact that the original director left the company. Ultimately though, I think the question we really need to ask is "How have games been affected by their respective eras of release?" Games like Pokemon Colosseum would never exist today if it wasn't for the 2000's heavily emphasizing edge and I miss that. When Valkyrie Profile 2 innovated, people hated it and the game fell under the radar because of it... but I was all for the changes and absolutely adored the game's new direction, can't say the same for Valkyrie Elysium but the reason for that isn't merely due to the innovation, rather the fact that it was outsourced to another development company, which drasically changed everything to the point that it wasn't even remotely recognizable. Valkyrie Profile 2 was recognizable, it still maintained the core aspects of the first game, those being the core idea of the game's combat and the side scrolling levels, while getting rid of all the problems that the original game had, the "Valkyrie Simulation" bullshit with the non-linear approach to progression where 99.99999999999999999999999% of paths lead to what might as well be a game over screen, which meant that only 1 path was viable, which went against the whole non-linear approach but finding that path was borderline impossible due to how cryptic the game is about it. It was a mess but sadly people were more taken by it than 2 generally speaking and they were upset when 2 removed all that in favor of more traditional progression and removal of einherjar cutscenes in favor of an actual story, something that was lacking in the original Valkyrie Profile. As an advocate for Valkyrie Profile 2 and as someone who is sick and tired of hearing its naysayers constantly beat the dead horse, I can safely say that I'm on team innovation... just don't touch Painkiller it's sacred. I think when games absolutely nail the formula, they should be left be. I think some franchises should just end and stop getting released entirely. Painkiller and Onimusha being two examples of this, leave them be, maybe re-release them on modern systems then leave them alone. Don't ruin something that is perfected, particularly if they are narrative driven experiences. I think game companies need to stop leaning on brand names and start making new IPs. I think this paints a clear picture of how I feel about gaming nowadays, I'm absolutely sick of modern gaming.

I'm curious--have you played any good Painkiller clones? Or you don't even seek them out since you're content with what you have? I hear how you feel. I can understand companies' trepidation when the money won't come from a single, new release though. Credit to Nintendo for at least bringing back more of their older IPs like Pikmin, taking Metroid more seriously, and continuing with Fire Emblem. But man, if you read some of the mission statements in Nintendo's financial reports... Let's just say that I know why they made a lot of questionable decisions in Scarlet and Violet. They're not exactly operating as independently as it seems, and that outside direction is pointing to catering to modern audiences in all of the ways that you can imagine.

@@TheLegendofLeo The only Painkiller clone ever made was Dreamkiller by Mindware, which is impossible to play now. So no I haven't played any Painkiller clones, the closest thing to Painkiller gameplay wise is Serious Sam and Quake, I don't like those games, the closest thematically would bee Darkwatch but that game plays more like Halo. Painkiller is the one and only First Person Shooter that I can honestly say that I love and I played every Painkiller game and while they vary in quality, I've enjoyed playing all of them because the core gameplay is top notch... just a shame the eggtooth games have such ameteur level design but it's hard to ruin Painkiller for me so long as you don't change the core mechanics and don't add stuff like ADS/Reloading/Sprinting or Remove bunnyhopping.

So the real conclusion is there is no conclusion! Haha With Pokémon, the innovation tends to come with the programming for new hardware. Gen 1 to 2 expanded the color palate. 2 to 3 increased the bit rate. 3 to 4 added wifi capabilities. 4 to 5 enhanced the wifi capabilities and added visual depth / enhanced combat animations. 5 to 6 made home wifi more accessible (for me anyway). It also was the first mainline game to sport full 3D visuals. After that, the distinctions become murky. Is Sun and Moon really a 7th gen? Only because of an enhanced roster. I don’t see how sword and shield utilize switch hardware to provide a unique experience aside from perhaps the open area or dlc. It feels like Game Freak lost their mojo by that point. Holistically and conceptually though, Pokémon has been an innovative series. The difficulty is that it has had to continue innovating to maintain progress and oftentimes it’s questionable. Rather than “false innovation” I’d refer to these moves as “lackluster innovation.” Per the third entries ie Yellow Crystal, if you adjust for ratios since the originals come in pairs, they actually have nearly equivalent sales. I appreciated seeing this data - I wasn’t aware how strong the original titles sold comparatively. It makes me wonder if the series can ever be as phenomenal as it was when it first hit. There’s a reason it’s our generation that really got hit with the poke fever and not more current generations!

Ahhhhhhh, no, that can't be the conclusion!! (But you're kind of right. I didn't think that this little assignment would necessitate so many more layers of research into so many other ingredients for success, but it's inevitable with how complex releasing a game is.) I see what you're describing. It's hard for me to make a case for Sun & Moon as well. The areas were more complex than X & Y's at times, but it's not like exploration felt significantly different. Ride Pokémon were their innovation, I suppose. Interesting point about the third entries' sales! An astute observation, as expected of you. You haven't played Scarlet or Violet yet, right? I won't spoil them when I discuss them in my next ranking video. I don't think that Nintendo will ever recreate the Poké mania of old--not strictly through Pokémon games anyway. Maybe if they do Mario Kart and Pokémon crossovers...

@@TheLegendofLeo ohh feel free to spoil away - I can’t imagine there being one thing spoil-worthy in Scarlet and Violet and on the chance there is, maybe it entices me to play. You know, a lot of the early Pokémon spin-offs were far more innovative from a gameplay standpoint. But as spin-offs are frequently fated, they didn’t push units. Arceus is an interesting exception, I’m not sure how exactly it achieved the market success it did but I’m glad it did. You can infer conclusions based on the sample size, however, the data is skewed towards RPGs. It’s not a bad thing - they are three series I like and am happy to see the data for. To get information on gaming industry trends as a whole, its probably best to look at breakthrough titles like Dark Souls or Breath of the Wild and measure as best one can how innovative or replicative they are.

@@Majora_T I know! Mystery Dungeon, Stadium, Snap, etc. Stadium probably has the most potential for being a successful series. Wouldn't people love a Pokémon version of Mario Party to play with their friends? Arceus felt like it captured elements of Pokémon Snap. Hopefully we get more Legends games with the kinks ironed out. Like I said to Tea, if I make more videos like this then I'll examine different series. Mario would be one, and yeah, maybe the Souls series. There's a very low likelihood of something like this happening again anytime soon though 😅

Honestly, i was underwhelmed by BOTW. You can be innovative while maintaining its core structure. Taking away the things i liked about it soured me quite a bit. The physics playground is not why i play Zelda. I play for the dungeons, the tools, the feel of progress that allows you to unlock more of the world. I stopped after a 20 hours into TOTK, feels like a massive waste of time. I feel games are too saturated nowaday and quality is on the decline. I feel botw and totk could have been another series and not zelda.
@TheLegendofLeo
@TheLegendofLeo 7 месяцев назад
I can imagine a Zelda game set in the traditional ways, but with some modern items and puzzles. Magnesis and Cryonis are abilities that would fit right in with the older games. It's too bad that TotK didn't appeal to you. The little touches like familiar enemies, caves in the style of grottoes, and being able to create ice platforms brought me right back to OoT.

@@TheLegendofLeoi prefer a tool that does that than an ipad. I like acquiring abilities throughout the game, not given in the beginning. Ocarinas grottoes feel like you are in another world, a strange place with eerie ambient music. These games...its just another place, you just walk in and out. Check out the five hour retrospective story guide i did on ocarina. I know im in the minority on this and i dont hate it. It just feels like typical open world with zelda mechanics instead of a large zelda world with massive dungeons and impactful items. Items in these new games are not unfortunately 😢

@@Nerdporeal Yeah, I remember a bit of disappointment setting in when I realised that I had all of BotW's abilities at the start of the game. It obviously didn't affect me in the long-term, but I can see that bothering people who want the experience that you're describing. You are in the minority, but you're definitely not alone! I think a quarter of my friends prefer the older games over BotW+TotK.
