Flying with Dennis! Aviation Jedi Master and Longtime Mentor.
#IFR training with Garmin GTN 750, G3X Touch, GFC 500 Digital Autopilot.
Proudly associated with ForeFlight: www.foreflight.com/flightchops
Having been working closely with Dennis for nearly a decade, I am proud to be able to recommend his services to anyone that wants to take their flying to the next level.
Our relationship started when I was a rusty VFR pilot needing to get recurrent… that lead to Dennis introducing me to tail wheel flying which changed everything about where I was headed as an aviator. Then came multi engine and IFR flying. It’s been awesome to have Dennis as a mentor all these years.
Next Level Flight Training (nlft.ca) provides personalized and professional #flighttraining for serious #generalaviation pilots. We'll help you fly with more confidence and precision to get more out of your investment. Be a better, safer pilot with Next Level Flight Training.
The next episode will cover flying couple approaches, and executing a go around using automation, while continuing to share more tools from Dennis’ and Justin’s IFR flying tool bags.
Huge thanks to all the Supporters on Patreon! The raw / uncut flight with Justin is already available to supporters, and the Flight with Dennis will be released before the second part.
Productions like this wouldn't be possible without your help and ongoing support.

FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

Thank you Steve for showing us your path to flying with excellence!! I"m so grateful of your humble spirit with showing us everything you did well plus your learning experiences along the way! I crushed my left ankle and foot falling off the roof onto a concrete patio July 7th. Three surgeries later, I"m still so happy when I see you release a new video for me and my wife Amy to see. Thank you so much!! May God overwhelm you, your staff and family with blessings!! :- )

As a builder/owner of an RV-10, I am excited to see you introduce many aviators of certified aircraft to the incredible performance and avionics that have been a part of the experimental aviation community for years. Having flown my -10 for 8 years with a similar avionics package, I am still in awe of its capabilities. The avionics make single pilot IFR operations far more safe and far less anxiety provoking. You can let the autopilot focus on the tedium while you monitor and make sure that everything is going as planned. Game changer! Keep up the good work.

I am not a pilot, I have flown a super light for 20 minutes as I got a gift from my wife for a scenic flight around Helsinki Finland. I LOVE planes alot and these videos are so interesting to me even though I don’t understand much about what is happening. But these videos are just so well done that it is just nice to watch and try to understand what is going on!

Too bad you're living in totally corrupt Finland, where they just removed the country's number 1 general aviation airport (and the country's overall nr 2 airport!!) just because of absolutely blatant corruption. And they destroyed that whole country's GA pretty much as now the capital city area has no GA airports, and overwhelmingly most people and economic activity are in that area. Too bad you have a totally corrupt president Niinisto, his friend the ex-mayor of Helsinki Pajunen who owns land near the airport, their friends they installed into the aviation authorities specifically to succeed in their corruption, and the corrupt Green party also participated including corrupt criminal Anni Sinnemaki, who made deals with Pajunen's corrupt protégé Vapaavuori and is being paid by the land owners and construction companies in plain view of everyone. Too bad there are basically no laws for politicians and the 'elite' in Finland at all, it's just a lawless wild west for them to play and steal money in.

A “Next Level” type of training is imperative and good on Dennis for providing it. Today, for many reasons, flight schools don’t teach a person how to fly, they teach them how to pass a flight test. Massive difference.

I saw the ol' safety wire pliers and that is a whole skill by itself. It's not too difficult when it's open and easy to get to everything. But in cramped quarters it's an art to get the wire on the correct side of the fastener and nice and tight and looking good. I spent a whole roll of wire just practicing before I would use it on my plane.

Been busy archiving an EAA Chapter 113 presentation I did Thursday on the RV-8 build, so didn't get to this until today. So glad I don't have to immerse myself in the IFR world you live in as I learn my aircraft. Also glad my airplane has pretty good forward visibility on the ground; even better than Bruce Bohannon's RV-8, although I'll pull a wedge cushion out for Dave's flight. My recurrency with Bruce went very well; I'm ready to fly and so is the airplane. Been in touch with Dave and hope to see you guys next week.

When you did the direct-to after the hold, you should have technically activated the next leg instead. That way your guidance would have been the published leg, rather than an arbitrary direct line
@KadenOverman

True, because the published leg has the terrain and obstruction clearance associated with it. The MSA is higher than the leg but is still good practice to activate the leg and intercept.

Great content. Regarding the “hold” staying active: when you reactivated the approach, the 750 did exactly what the approach called for in sequence. The simplest way to stop the next step from being the hold is to “delete the hold,” not reactivate the approach. Keep up the great work!

I think that head on traffic is a great example that even with all these fancy whizbang panels, when its VFR then eyes still need to be outside the cockpit! There's ALWAYS *that guy* with no ADS-B, perhaps even NORDO, who is around. Its legal, so perhaps no salt should be thrown their way, but as pilots we have to make sure not to get too reliant on gawking at our digital maps. If I recall, the majority of in-air collisions happen on perfectly clear VFR days.
@tammaramma
@tammaramma 2 года назад
Agreed. It's not the yokel without a transponder that's the problem. It's not keeping your scan going both inside and outiside the airplane. Heck, most airpspace doesen't even require a radio. Having ADS-B, etc. is a great tool, but often leads to a false sense of security. There are many places where a transponder is not required. As a CFII I see it all the time. Way too much time spent heads down in the cockpit without nary a glance outside. Dividing your attention inside and outside is a skill that must be practiced and observed.
@en0n126
@en0n126 Год назад
The panel was alerting him and showing him where the traffic was, and even then he was having difficulty locating them visually. This wasn't a very good example of why you also need eyes up. You can miss nearby traffic while flying VFR. The traffic avoidance system in the Garmin will see the traffic when you didn't. If your panel is telling you "traffic right there --->", you take steps to evade, even if you can't see them visually. That's the point of IFR. Accidents commonly happen when people stop trusting their instruments. If IFR didn't work well, you would think the majority of in-air collisions would happen in poor visibility. Instead, that's when everyone flying has IFR and are really trusting what their panel is reporting, and therefore avoiding well. Seems like it's the clear day VFR flyers who are running into each other then.

So, I haven't flow as PIC since the late 70s or early 80s. It's been a while. Also, my flying was limited from a Cessna 150 on up to about a Skylane, and the PA-28 line of fixed gear. I also, while flying in New England, was more of a coastal flyer, and we didn't fly in really cold weather. So, the reason I bring all this up is that you were talking about Temperature Compensation, and I'm wondering if you might, in the future, do a video on exactly what that is. I mean, we know density altitude changes with temperature, and engines run differently in colder temps, but you were doing to some calculations, and I don't think I ever learned to do anything like that, and maybe I didn't need to. However, I'd love to hear what all you're doing. Thanks Steve, ahead of time. CGA looks absolutely great and you have an awesome airplane to fly.

I love warbirds and back country flying, and so does Dennis… and some of those aircraft are Nordo for sure. But in the area we were operating, a transponder is required. To avoid trying to write the details myself, I googled and got this: “When operating in transponder airspace (all Canadian Class A, B, and C airspace, as well as some Class D and E airspace (CAR 601.03)), your aircraft must be equipped with a Mode C transponder (CAR 605.35). Does this confusing cluster of "electronic legos" offer a "partial panel" when the "virtual" stuff fails--and it will at some time. Generally in the middle of an approach while in the clouds.
@FlightChops
@FlightChops Год назад
There are several layers of redundancy in this technology - I’d be happy to elaborate on it but again serious question are you a pilot and do you know what a vacuum system failure in an old school six pack panel looks like? Because it’s a lot more serious (and more common) than an electronics failure which is much more obvious and less insidious.
@robertwatson818
@robertwatson818 Год назад
@@FlightChops I do. This is why partial panel is so important. My last instructor was an active duty military pilot--and he taught rotary wing and fixed wing--an amazing instructor. He told from the start he would not sign off for me to take the check ride until I could perform a VOR--circle to land--approach. This later saved me from possible harm. Every flight with him saw me practicing partial (panel--needle -ball--and airspeed) . He would go under the hood and fly around on partial panel as though it were nothing! I learned what could actually be done with a particular aircraft rather than what the manual said or others claimed. He was very strict about having place to land in mind if things went south. He no longer lies due to health reasons but has a small gunshot north of here about twenty miles. After getting out of the military he and my brother flew together for various oil companies for twenty years. My brother retired some years ago due to health reasons--20,000 hours--check airmen status with his company. In the Army he was an instructor for the Cobra Gunship and the Apache as well. For both of them the health issue was a hip replacement making it necessary to take a certain drug to relieve nerve issues. The FAA grounded them both.
@robertwatson818
@robertwatson818 Год назад
@@FlightChops I called buddy who flies in the corporate world. All their aircraft are glass cockpit with battery backup which provides a basic panel. Some further probing reveals the Airbus 320 series have had 50 failures of these devices. Fortunately this was during daylight hours and VFR conditions in every instance. United had a flight lose everything to include radios and transponders. Again in daylight and VFR conditions. I can see a need for auto backup which would give you a master caution and immediately switch to the backup mode.

It's a fair but incorrect observation that our traffic scan was compromised. This video shows ~10 mins from each flight that was over an hour long, and I focussed on the parts where we were digging into the panel, and even then, each video shows a part where we paused to work with ATC to spot traffic. I'd argue the glass is less heads down time because the data is more clear, AND it also shows traffic in a way that steam can't.

Why do pilots fly without an ADS-B transponder onboard? It seems to me to be a simple install that pays huge dividends in flight safety? I'm not a pilot, I'm a simmer who wishes he could be a pilot, I navigate this planet in a big powered wheelchair, it's a long story as to why.... I was doing this out of my pocket. Then the gas crunch hit. Rental went from $18 and hour--wet to $35 an hour literally overnight. By the end of the next month it hit $40 an hour and rising. I could no longer afford it and that was the end of my flying years. For a time I flew enough to keep my ratings but rates kept going up and I had to give up flying. If you watched this one, and enjoyed it, I invite you to tell me what better title to try. I'm open to changing it - I tested 3 in the first few hours and this one seemed to perform better. You are the first to complain about it.
