Inside A Chinese EV Graveyard - Uncovering The Truth In Person

Recent press reports and certain prominent RU-vidrs and Twitter accounts have been making some pretty strong accusations about Chinese EV graveyards, claiming false registrations to inflate numbers, environmental concerns, and corruption. But how much truth is there in the words? We visited one of the featured sites in person to see how much basis there was to the claims, and found there's even more to these sites than you might think.

Really appreciate you for doing actual investigation on the ground instead of making up wild speculations and spreading false information like most people tend to do. Hopefully these evs can be restored and sold to other markets for cheap or be used for scrap instead of sitting there and rotting away.

Corruption is fairly common in China, not sure if the video you saw was the same as the one I did but the ones I saw were clearly new. The truth is not so clear, more than likely there are a mix of new vehicles and those from ex car share schemes. The CCP were heavily subsidising "new energy vehicles", usually when any government do these special schemes they get abused by crooks making a fast buck, this is the reality of the world we live in. China historically had limits on the age of vehicles (same as Japan) this was not good for the environment as perfectly good serviceable vehicles got scrapped ( dumped in fields).

Look up who sponsors Inside China Auto and tell me this is a 100% independent factual report! My original comment was giving the benefit of the doubt to this report but now I am pretty sure these cars are new, making a car look old by throwing a drink bottle and a few leaves into a car doesn't mean it's old. The thousands of cars in the distance could be anything, they are too far away to tell what they are. As the CCP don't like any negative news getting out I will assume this video is NOT factual.

I've seen the other video on YT that you are referring to (although there is more than just that one) and it is a stark contrast to what you portray here. It's scary that misinformation/disinformation is allowed on this scale. Worldwide, we need a clampdown on the BS so that we get a clear indicator of the state of the planet and its resources. Waste management is more important than ever these days, and living practises need a thorough review. I'll just throw one example into the ring. Television sets. Why on earth do we need so many options? Massively oversized screens, harmful chemicals within and ultimately, they are nothing more than something you look at for an hour or two to fill a gap in your day. In Costco they have upwards of 20 different sets, all showing the same crap. This needs sorting out sooner rather than later.

Social Media are for the ego's of the publisher - not at all reporting so one grain of salt is not enough at all! On the other hand, some more openness with China would make people understand each other more - in general. Such articles would then, possibly, been quickly disregarded by clarifications like yours. @@InsideChinaAuto Whenever there are new technologies, there is usually a craze of new companies that are startups. In Chine there were 500 EV companies. Now most of them go bust, some of them are merged with other companies and fade from history. After 40 years only a handful of companies remain that have all the patents and have a known trusted brand. The surviving companies have created deflation, where they are able to mass market their product at cheaper prices [lower prices, razor thin prices, bring a greater volume of buyers, creating greater .volume of profits]. This creates deflation. We see this with tesla who, because of greater volume of slues is able to lower prices but yet have incredible profits because of greater volumes. They also get brand recognition. Thus customers desert other companies and rush to the cheaper, better tesla. Because of greater profits, tesla is able to manufacture more charging stations, have better electronics, have better software, learns more manufacturing lessons, improves manufacturing methods , all the while getting better and better. Other companies get left behind and go bust. There is nothing wrong with seeing a field of 5000 unsold cars. It is normal with new technology. In my day there were 500 computer manufacturing startups. Now there are only a handful, but the ones we have have razor thin margins but greater profits. Today we have AI startups, a veritable fleas nest of startups. They will be merged with other companies and only a few will remain. Having 490 causalities is normative and there is no shame in that.

So, if I'm understanding you correctly, this confirms that there are indeed a lot of "discarded" EVs sitting around in China due to the failure of car-sharing companies, which largely sprang up to take advantage of government subsidies. However, there aren't nearly as many as the original video (by 'serpentza') claims, and they are NOT in fact leaking chemicals all over the place. (Btw, those batteries are indeed recyclable, and will probably be "harvested" in the not-too-distant future.)

Basically right, yes, though I'm not sure what subsidies were being given out for car sharing schemes, if any, they'd be more likely for sales of cars but I'm not an expert on what subsidies there are/were. Clearly if there ever were, there aren't any anymore because nobody is rushing into this space. Bear in mind most people got into the 'sharing' game not for money but for the value of the data. It may happen elsewhere, but in China pollution and environmental negligence is on a whole different scale than anywhere else. You're dreaming if you think China will do the environmentally responsible thing. It's only about short term profits and flashy projects to entice investors. See the Tofu Dreg Real Estate projects flooding and crumbling apart . I hope I never see a Chinese vehicle in my country, especially any of their shoddy EV knockoff brands that have flooded the market and will be abandoned in a matter of months/years.

How many places through China is that replicated and what is going to happen to the cars? 2. What happens when the next big technology jump happens and all the current EV cars become obsolete. Are the "car parks" going to be 10x bigger filled with 2021/22/23 models? I guess that is a different story though.

@daddy_druid
@daddy_druid 11 месяцев назад
My thoughts exactly, "zakelwe". Still very disturbing to see these just parked up and no effort to recycle or reuse - at least for the batteries. Tells me we don't know how to recycle used/obsolete batteries yet. Not good for the strip mining operations going on around the world. What an utter waste. Shame.
@Stephen-wc8fn
@Stephen-wc8fn 11 месяцев назад
1. As in bankruptcy sales the world over, they’ll go to auction. Some might get a second life as a learner vehicle etc, but the overwhelmingly vast majority will be bought by recycle and scrap merchants. China is one of a handful of countries that recycle lithium EV batteries - I don’t think any western countries recycle batteries more than a token amount. 2. We’re going to see EV car parks growing all over the world - it’s not an especially Chinese problem. Lithium batteries are a major environmental and safety problem because they burn like a flame thrower and emit lethal skin burning fumes - check out videos of burning EV cars after a car crash for some examples.
@InsideChinaAuto
@InsideChinaAuto 11 месяцев назад
There are more of them though I'm not sure how many. Some are in the original video, No Place To Place 2, though they seem to be smaller than this and have the really really crap cars in them. Honestly the issue is not the EV part, it's the car itself. The cars in these parks, not the Neta so much as its newer, but the others were the cheapest, crappiest cars they could be, and the Chinese car industry has just gotten so much better in the last 5 years, so much more value, 100x better infotainment and interiors, the competition (there's about 70 Chinese brands) is intense so you snooze you die. The EV part of these cars is probably what an early Nissan Leaf is in Europe, but the interior is like what an original Mini is to a new one. Nobody will want them, they're not economical to fix and sell, so as one guy said, you have to hope the batteries get recycled and the cars scrapped at some point.

I see hundreds of discarded vehicles. chances are, such graveyards are all over the place.

There are hundreds, and there are more sites, filled with cars that were flaky when new and even more so now. Recycling what can be recycled is the only option as the cars are not up to the latest standards of EVs or even cars in general.

Leaving most of the claims aside from the original blogger, this highlights a potentially big issue with EV's. As with mobile phones. Technology moves at a very fast pace. The same could happen with EV's. This leads to a potential scenario whereby cars, only a few years old, become worthless and redundant as people want the latest tech, best range, quickest charging. With ICE. This tech cannot really progress now. A little bit more efficient and cleaner, but essentially it hasn't evolved.
@InsideChinaAuto
@InsideChinaAuto 11 месяцев назад
That's the issue, because EVs are developing fast currently, they had no investment for 100 years, now they have it all. There will be waste in early years, or at least leftovers cast aside, but from what I understand, batteries can be fully recycled so if these old triangles can be reshaped into squares, there's hope yet.
