Caitlin is Steve's stepdaughter by marriage. His wife is her biological mother - her biological father (who was Black) died when she was very young. Steve has helped raise her since she was 5 years old.

She probably doesn’t experience the world or is seen as a mixed raced person. She would have to tell me she was biracial.

I was wondering while listening to the father talking about himself being racist why he would have had a child with a black women. He did not. The young lady's father is black but he died years ago and Ramey married her white mother and has raised her since she was 5 years old. I had to do my own research to get that info.

Unfortunately children have no control over this. They are impressed upon by their parents, environment, neighborhood, neighbors, school, other children/colleagues, teachers, strangers etc and never really stops into adulthood where we can’t always control our environment especially in the 40 hour + workplace. The racism and sexism against biracial females never ceased to exist in any institution or environment.

Yup I endured racism from my darkskin mother and caucasian father. However my mother started to have a little empathy for me when she saw how black and white bullied me all through school and life.

As the product of an interracial/intercultural marriage and presently in my forties I am going to speak my truth. Raising us to know ALL of ourselves is extremely important. People like to tell us what we should or should not identify as and which parent we should pick. It is traumatizing. I have light skin and I am ambiguous looking. I get mistaken for every light skin culture and ethnicity under the sun. My father was half Nigerian and half Indigenous and my mum was born and raised in Scotland. I also have a Bengali great grandparent on dad's side I look like neither of them. It had been a sore spot for me growing up but now I embrace it. I love all of me and the cultures that made who I am.

How is it that your sympathy immediately goes to the abuser in the situation? Furthermore, you and wife's cultural differences are not the same. If you come from a place with more racial homogeny and don't understand the dynamics here then you really shouldn't speak on it.

His racism, by his own admission, would make sense with her comment. It seems you want to know how white people are doing what the OP said by existing. As a black male who does not identify with any party politically, I find this topic to be very delicate. It requires a balanced perspective, and most people I encounter don't seem to get it quite right. You are not guilty of anything by being white. You are not guilty of anything by merely existing. Not sure if this is what the OP was saying, but if it was, then I don't agree with it. I don't expect you to become a civil rights activist just because you're white. What I do think is reasonable is that you acknowledge the truth of history, the truth of what people experience, and hold everyone accountable equally, even your own people when that becomes necessary. If people were to do this and value truth even if it goes against "narratives", their feelings, or whatever, this world would be a much better place and people would get along a lot better.

Your attitude could be part of the problem. Chile, you should watch some of the videos where people respond to: "tell me why you think your White parent should not have a child that's a person of color." The responses are both sad and eye opening. Hopefully this father and daughter can work through and overcome his racism. Kudos to him for even acknowledging it and seeking help.
