We were fortunate enough to have a tour inside Avro Vulcan ZM594 at the Newark Air Museum.
The Vulcan was famous for theFalklands War and for conducting Operation Black Buck, the longest bombing raids in history at the time during the Falklands War. The raids, at almost 6,600 nautical miles (12,200 km) and 16 hours for the round trip, were the longest-ranged bombing raids in history at that time. It even involved putting together and rejuvenating the Vulcan from near retirement by finding parts which were used as ashtrays. Also a £5 calculator bought from a market help calculate the long journey. The objective of the Black Buck missions were to attack Port Stanley Airport and its associated defences. Destroying the runway at the Airport would stop the Argentines from using the runway, giving Britain the advantage.
Precision bombing wasn’t actually what the Vulcan was built for. You see, dropping nuclear bombs didn’t need to much pin point accuracy.
The Vulcan made up part of the British V-bombers which took the realm of being the guardian during the Cold War. Designer of the Vulcan Roy Chadwick didn’t live to see to see the Vulcan fly as he was tragically killed in plane crash in 1947
It hosted a crew of 5 and powered by 4 x Bristol Siddeley Olympus 201 or 301 jet engines, giving the Vulcan a max speed of 644 mph with a max range of 4,603 miles.
Avro Vulcan XM594 was flown to the former RAF Winthorpe airfield from RAF Waddington on Monday 7th February 1983. At the time XM594 was the only Vulcan aircraft disposed of by the RAF that was flown into a non-licensed airfield.
RAF Bases that the Vulcan was based: Akritori, Coningsby, Cottesmore, Finningley, Scampton and Waddington

Done this tour at NAM. It was really inspiring to hear from ex-crew. One of the few Vulcans to go inside at a low cost. East Midlands Aeropark is a good one too.

Nice tour Ted, thank you. My enduring memories of the Vulcan was from as a kid living up north in Scotland, along Speyside, the Vulcans (and other aeroplanes) used to use the chimney of the distillery I lived at as a waypoint - many times we'd hear them and I'd look up to have the planes come over just skimming the hills. The shape and sound of the Vulcan, at such close quarters in active training can't ever be forgotten.

Good old Vulcan. I love these videos Nikos. Proper look into the monster, the absolute brutal but beautiful soaring Vulcan.. wish we could still see one fly. Thank goodness for museums like Newark. XM594 standing in all her glory. RAF Stalwart and that famous howl and roar will go down in history. How did it fly, it is hugh as. Well done Ted, Nikos for this..Please can we see more like this? Thank you for taking the time and effort to make this. Legends both of you. Watched 4th Nov 2023 No:- 584

I've never been a Vulcan fan. A big metal triangle. Something of a 'death trap for some of the aircrew during an emergency too. However, it did play an important role during the Cold War, and as a 'recruiter' for the 1960s RAF. A very interesting and well produced video boss and Nikos. 👍

Oiii oiiii Gazza Was shocked to learn about that there were only 2 ejection seats but knowing the sinister and main objective of the aircraft, very controversial that. I guess carrying all those nukes and bailing out made little difference? Thank you for your comments Gazza and was given the tour by a Vulcan Pilot 😎

Agree in terms of the death trap though. But if you are on a nuclear mission I guess what are you landing on to 😩
@gazza2933
@gazza2933 Год назад
@@typhoon123 It has happened on routine flights. Though an ejection seat won't always come to your rescue. I know Waddington and Scampton well and I was around when the anti flash (white ) version was at Coningsby for a while. Yes they always looked spectacular but just not one of my favourite aircraft.
@gazza2933
@gazza2933 Год назад
@@TedConingsby Boss. Yes been quite a lot of Vulcan 'mishaps' on routine flights over the UK. Sadly fatal ones too. In the early days it wasn't possible to eject safely at lower levels. Now of course it is possible to make a safe ejection from an aircraft whilst on the ground.

Very nice, Ted. Who doesn't love the Vulcan? It's just a shame they had to retire this old lady from flyable status. I've heard how some British planes will provide an escape for the pilot and co-pilot, but not for the other crew members, described as a system of "lords" and "serfs". 😉
