The small Eastern European country of Georgia is becoming an international destination for surrogacy, a push that's driven by the war in Ukraine and increasing interest in surrogacy worldwide. But even as demand for surrogates skyrockets, the country is divided on what this industry means for Georgian women.

Not to mention getting the proper legal documents to get them out of Ukraine and back into their home countries. They all eventually got their babies but it took some longer than others not for lack of trying. When covid hit Ukraine shut its borders and the same thing happened. Oh man…. Couples old enough to be GRAND parents are parenting infants… The biology of parenting extends beyond gestation and giving birth. One needs ENERGY to RAISE the child: sleepless nights, carry them in our arms, pick them up, set them down, prop them up on a slide, toss and catch in the air, run with them and after them as they enter the toddlerhood and beyond. Parenthood is a blissful and physically demanding labor……. unless the intended older parents continue to outsource the parenting to …. nannies for more $€£¥

I have several issues with surrogacy beyond what was mentioned here. Surrogate pregnancies are inherently higher risk than regular pregnancies because the child is not biologically the surrogate's. Furthermore, consider how babies are being taken from the only person they know, which is extremely stressful to the child; and research shows that lots of stress in the first year can have long term impacts, including impacting the development of the areas of the brain that help control stress. Surrogacy is harmful for women and harmful for babies. As much as I am sympathetic to people wanting biological children, and to the poor women who make money from surrogacy, the harm surrogacy causes women and children cannot be overlooked. Frankly, surrogacy should be illegal. If you want a child that badly, adopt.

I'd be curious to know how the environment the surrogate lives in impacts the development of the fetus. An analysis of the whole nature vs nurture thing in a way. It may not be their biological child but the environmental factors of where they live, especially if in poverty, must have some impact. What about if the surrogate is constantly stressed and anxious because of living in poverty? What kinds of contaminants are they exposed to and what about nutrition of the surrogate?

These are definitely all relevant factors, humans are a product of their environment. Nutrition, pollution and the physical wellbeing of the surrogate all have a big impact, besides the external environment which she is living in. Thats why, if done properly, the surrogate mother should optimally live with the family for that period in order to optimally control these factors and provide the best care for the developing child. Research shows that at a certain age of the fetus external sounds even have a significant impact on the brain development. There is no nature vs nurture debate, both are equally relevant. Genetics and epigenetics, which already contain a multigenerational blueprint of the environment and life choices build upon the environment which is being provided for the developing child.

@@venusproject8202 @venusproject8202 I understand what you're describing though for surrogates mothers the notion they live with the family awaiting the child would be in most circumstances a complete upheaval moving country, often a new language and even if not that any pregnant woman living as a gooseberry under a couples control especially if they're economically vulnerable would find the situation overwhelming. On top of needing to part with the child in one year they'd change living arrangements three times. Adopted children often never hear or feel their adoptive parents from the womb. I've known biological parents that have had domestic fights, smoked, drank far too much and in one case that child's now a doctor and in the other the child's slightly slower in learning but my point is we cant police women's actions like nutrition etc to any major extent for 9 whole months. Perhaps if you paid a surrogate 2 million euros they might feign going along with it and smile but internally it's still imprisoning them. It's a hell no from me anyways.

Surrogacy remains a weird one for me... On the one hand I 100% support anyone who can't have biological children through giving birth having children. On the flip side the majority of surrogacy stories we often see are 1) Hollywood and famous people using surrogacy, when there doesn't actually seem like anything biologically is 'wrong'. 2) Quite a few cases I've seen have been couples who already have children, 'adding' the child born through surrogacy to their family 😒Adopt! It seems like surrogacy is an option for anyone who doesn't want to deal with the assumed 'issues' of adopted children to be honest... Or the future possibility of the child wanting to know their biological family. Another 'excuse' people seem to use is that 'adoption is too expensive'. But so should surrogacy! If surrogacy were better regulated nationally and globally then it should be expensive 👩🏼‍⚖👨🏼‍⚖🧑🏼‍⚖ I really am interested and it'll be fascinating to watch, when the generations born from surrogates grow up if they will want to connect with their gestation carriers🤔

The only iffy thing about surrogacy is the idea of wealthy women, not wanting to mess up their body is so they have an impoverished person do it for them. Other than that it seems like a beautiful option for families who need help building their families due to not being able to carry or whatever. - Ethically one should adopt if they can’t have a biological child. However, we don’t live in a perfect world. I understand the desire to pass down your own genes; a primitive desire. - also, if a family already has passed their genes down to a biological child and want a second child but cannot conceive, they should adopt. Surrogacy becomes less ethical the second it’s no longer about passing down ur genes and strictly about wanting all ur kin to have ur DNA. My opinions only, I don’t feel that I’m qualified to be the person to tell others what to do… but this is my opinion as of now.

You are wrong, wealthy women are not the ones having impoverished women do this. Kim Kardashian, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Chrissy tiegen all used regulated US surrogacy. @Lucky77772
@Lucky77772 10 месяцев назад
With adoption, there can be a lot of uncertainty. For example, psychopathy is genetic, and sociopathy has some genetic influences but is more due to nurture. Obviously, prisons have a higher proportion of both psychopathy and sociopathy, all though most in prison are neither. Sociopathy is more prevalent than psychopathy. So let's say both parents or one parent has gone to prison for an egregious or very violent crime and they have psychopathy..the kid can carry those genes. I believe it is called the warrior gene. Anyways, adoption agencies in some instances, have glossed over important information, whether it be behavioral disorders, genetic disorders, ailments, developing disorders, etc. A parent may be less equipped to deal with such if the kid is not their own offspring. They may feel less obligation to do so. Such is down to evolutionary biology. One will feel more commitment and in some cases invest in more resources if the child is their own offspring. Don't get me wrong some adoptive parents are up to the task, but it is not all sunshine and rainbows. An adoptive parent not up to the task is not a bad person. In that case a surrogate mother to carry their child might be a better option. On the flipside a parent may carry a serious disorder whether mental illness such as schizophrenia which is 80 percent genetic or they may have some other genetic disorder ..or in some cases they may be more likely to endure a high risk pregnancy. In such a case parents may opt to adopt. Now there are many options to have kids, i.e. for a lesbian couple, one may opt to get pregnant through a sperm donor. I think these are all viable options and depends on one's circumstances. Of course there are many kids that need to be adopted out, so when a parent who already has kids opts for surrogacy instead of adoption I can see some issue, but I also understand it in some case scenarios. One emerging trend I agree with in some cases, but not others is genetic engineering in terms of pregnancy. Unfortunately, it will only be the rich that benefit from this. Genetic engineering can be great as it can elimate the genes for certain diseases such as Tay Sacs, but genetic engineering is horrible when used to make designer babies. By such I refer to parents choosing to have their babies have blue eyes. It reinforces biased european based beauty norms (that stem from racism and colonisation/ imperialism) and it is shallow and superficial . Such parents are narcissistic and only care about appearances. Parents can also make their kids more athletic for example, with gene altering technology. In an essence, they want the perfect kid, but a perfect human doesn't exist. Our quirks and imperfections are what make us human. It is what makes life interesting. I think the moments of those quirks and idiosyncrasies are precious. A parent shouldn't love their kid based on how they excel in sports. They should love them for them. They should mold their kid to have good character. Not only that, but some genes overlap. For example, the gene for red hair can decrease pain tolerance and make it more difficult for one to respond to anesthesia and pain medication. Likewise the gene that reduces the chance of getting malaria is tied to sickle cell disease. Sorry for the rant, but there are so many angles to this

I have a son by a surrogate mother. The egg donor is a different woman to the surrogate. I agree the surrogate often does not receive enough. Mine received 10000 Euros fee from the agency and about 350 Euros a month living costs for 9 months. I have paid her 3k more, which she asked for, and I am paying 500 Euros a week as nanny until I can get him home. British law is stupid. You're supposed not to pay them, but you are supposed not to exploit them. I have to pay £24000 to a surrogacy lawyer for a parental order. That is more money to take away the surrogate's legal right as parent than she got for bearing him. These lawyers get paid £100's an hour. My surrogate asked for €70 a day to nanny the child. Many of these surrogates are divorcees in their 30s, who have had children of their own. They may not have the best options, but they are old enough to make their own decisions. There are less honourable ways of making money in my opinion.

The only type of surrogacy that is mostly moral would be if the surrogate is American(maybe some other developed countries) since there are regulations. She must be at least 20-21, needs a job(so she won't agree due to desperation), good medical care, and good pay. It's ridiculous how one of the surrogates in the video received only 500$. Because they can't officially be paid only reimbursed for expenses they are often promised gifts by the IPs who once the baby is born don't bother to give the gift. I know one surrogate who carried for an gay Italian couple who was promised once the baby was born they would pay for her and her family to visit Italy for a month. They never bothered to keep that promise. Commercial surrogacy is the best option. The Georgian surrogates at least know what they will be paid and have agreed to it.

i can understand both sides of this. i was briefly tempted to surrogacy, but i didnt. Now at 40 sans a child ... My main concern is that the money for surrogacy is simply a stop-gap. It is not invested into improving life outcomes. it needs to be more, but i also understand that to the average person, getting your hands on 10k+ is challenging at best. I still hope to have the opportunity to decide to have a child or not before my biological clock runs out, but it is 'calming' to know there are alternative ways to have a child if thats the decision i end up making. I never before had the finances, partner or the stability to raise a child. The last ten-ish years of ME/CFS has meant the decision to have a child and pursue romance has been put on hold while i focus on recovery.

Having a child is a very personal territory and it is okay to choose a choice for yourself. Don’t let society pressure you. For everyone in this video saying this is a terrible thing (and how the Antichrist is going to be born!!!), the question is a simple one: how do YOU propose that these women make money? Let's face it, if you're born in some countries, you just have zero chance of making a life. If you're born in Afghanistan, for example, you have basically no options. If I were a woman born in Georgia, I'd be doing the same thing.
@Belovedselah

You can't convince me that this is an acceptable way to make money. If earning enough money for a better quality of life is all it takes to justify this, then you may as well condone prostitution, drug trafficking, and pretty much anything else in between. It's all motivated by a desire to make a better life at all costs. Instead of supporting a system of exploitation, which are just bandaids on a gushing wound, we need to deal with the real problem which is economic exploitation. The societies that don't support their people with decent jobs because of their failed policies are societies that have failed their people.
