John Franklin Candy (October 31, 1950 - March 4, 1994 was a Canadian actor and comedian known mainly for his work in Hollywood films. Candy rose to fame as a member of the Toronto branch of the Second City and its related Second City Television series, and through his appearances in such comedy films as Stripes, Splash, Cool Runnings, Summer Rental, Home Alone, The Great Outdoors, Spaceballs, and Uncle Buck, as well as more dramatic roles in Only the Lonely and JFK. One of his most renowned onscreen performances was as Del Griffith, the talkative shower-curtain ring salesman in the John Hughes comedy Planes, Trains and Automobiles. In addition to his work as an actor, Candy was a co-owner of the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League from 1991 until his death, and the team won the 1991 Grey Cup under his ownership.

Several actors and directors have come out after working with him saying he was nicest man they've ever worked with. He always treated the kids on set as if they were his own kids and that really helped him get into character for Uncle Buck.

I met John Candy during the filming of Blessing Brothers in Chicago. I met him when I was signing in to work as an extra. I introduced myself to him, and he really took notice when I told him I was dating a former cast associate of his at The Second City . Every time we ran into each other during that time, he always greeted me with a hug and was always glad to see me. He treated me like he had known me for years. He introduced me to Carrie Fisher and others at the theatre. I was driving when I heard of his passing over the radio. I pulled over and wept for I don’t know how long. RIP, John. You are in our heats❤️

When John died I was devastated, I cried and mourned like I lost a favorite Uncle. He was such a warm and naturally funny person that you couldn't help but love him. Uncle Buck was one of my favorites. Planes, Trains and Automobiles, no matter how many times I watch it, I laugh and cry as much as the first time I saw it. I first saw him on SCTV, it's where I first saw Andrea Martin, Martin Short, really too many to name here. Its unbelievable how much comedic brilliance in one place. This brought back so much joy, Scott! Thanks for taking me along and reminding me of the good old days and a tribute to a great man.

You can recognize him by that rumbling laugh alone! I don't know anyone who doesn't like John Candy and a smile just comes to you thinking about him. What a treat that you were able to go in to the house and I can imagine the parties & laughter. So many talented people partying together must have been a blast as you know they'd feed off of each other's energy & some serious joke contests, no doubt. Uncle Buck has to be my favorite. Great video, Scott🎥🎬📽😍💖💜

I bought the Planes, Trains and Automobiles movie for my husband because he quotes it all the time. He knows every scene and laughs way ahead of time...never gets old for him. I also bought him a tee shirt with a plane, train and automobile that reads "those aren't pillows." My favorite is "Cool Runnings." A friend and I were lined up to see one of the star wars flicks, (early 80s), outside the old odeon in Newmarket. I see John candy walking across the street, i yell "there's john candy", and he starts looking around panicked, and says " WHERE, WHERE". He came across the street, shook hands, and asked a few questions, like what movie we were seeing......the odeon only played one! Funny.

East York was home to some of the tiniest houses in the city, like 500- 600 sq ft. The house next to Candy's boyhood home looks like it was part of teeny tiny housing development centered in East York for returning WW1 veterans. Candy was a Neil McNeil HS Alumnus. It was the local all boys Catholic HS for kids in East York & South Scarborough. Cool to see the other Candy bros.

One of my favorite characters John Candy did was Barf from "Space Balls". "I'm half man half dog. I'm my own best friend!!!" "The Great Outdoors" is another total classic. The scene where the bear knocks over the door onto John Candy and stands on top of him and the door, had me laughing my guts out. I loved every single one of his movies and always knew each show he was in would be great. I was SO sad when he died and I will Always remember him. Hey Scott, having fun watching your videos as I'm a new subscriber. I was also a student at his high school in Scarbs when it was still a private boys school (later turned public but still Catholic). I believe it was the Fall of '84 when I was in typing class (yes, the old typewriter!) on the 3rd floor facing the back of the school overlooking the sportsfield. My classmates were asking why I was laughing. I told them it was because of John Candy; they didn't believe me. I typed the exercise quickly, so was waiting for the rest of the class to finish. Then he singled me out and started making funny faces, goofing off behind the door's small window. My teacher opened the door and there he was, hiding in the hallway. He teased me for ratting him out lol He spent the remaining half hour of our class talking with us. He was nice & down-to-earth 🙂 Thanks, really enjoying your videos! 💯

I remember hearing the news of his passing, when I was at work. An address was noted where you could send a sympathy card and I sent one and I received a Thank you from his widow Rose. How nice was that. Oh so Canadian. She responded. He is so missed, by his fans, that his absence must have been enormous with the family. I do wish that these Canadian gems, would choose to be laid to rest in their homeland.

“Who’s Harry Crumb?” Is like one of my ALL time favorite movies! “You say you from NY?” No!, I work in NY, I’m from Budapest! (Oh! Hungary?) No, I had a falafel before I came over! Too funny! 😂😂😂

Thank you for putting this together, John Candy is also my favorite actor and Planes, Trains and Automobiles my favorite movie. I personally feel John Candy at least deserved an Oscar nomination. I can't wait to see more of your work. Thank you again and may the spirit of John Candy live forever.
