Thank you for your sharing in this video. I am a PSW student and have started studying due to a neighbour who fell ill, I cared for her in her home till she died last week, I was debating getting into home care for those reasons but after seeing this I am thinking of either moving first to another province with less privitization or going with a long term care home instead considering how low the pay is and how much they are expecting out of you.

I think a letter to your MPP would be more appropriate since home care is under provincial jurisdiction. And I would join you in your demand that the system be overhauled. I have survived brain surgery. I'm fortunate to have home care at least four days a week (two one-hour and two 45-minute sessions) but there are so many things a personal support worker can't do.

There should be a system where PSW can be paid directly by the client, I don't get why there is a need for a middleman (agency) to snatch majority of the funding. Just create a system to pay the care provider directly.

@@Jimpopal that is why their is a middle man. People can not afford to pay for PSW privately. Hence why there is a middle man to cover the cost by OHIP. 😔🙏🏽

@@sg5720 OHIP can be structured in a way so workers can bill them directly. Doctors bill OHIP for their services directly, other healthcare workers should be allowed too

As a Bayshore employee, one time they canceled a two hour visit for me and gave me a 10 hour visit because they would get paid more. They did not care about the client that has shorter visit because it was not in their best interest. Disgusting

U as the hourly worker got 10 hrs & didnt have to commute multiple times. So the company feels they did u a solid. 🙂 Its probably easier to get 2 hrs covered vs 10 hrs!

@@dinkster1729 On the flip side there should not be a two hour visit. It doesn’t allow time to get laundry down if in an apartment building and you have to wait to get a machine. When I eventually get home care I will only have it with three or more hours. It’s much more relaxed for worker and client instead of running here or there for two hour appointments.

I hope this program blows up and all higher executives for these companies get fired and charged. Also, the Ontario government should focus less on nursing homes and more of at home care and get follow Denmark.

Just demand better care and unite the public to do the same. Once people see a better way like the Denmark system and others, we can tell government by voting in what we want and letting govt. know what they are doing is not providing better care for all. Same with Health Care again another govt. dictated business. The public must be united on what it wants. There are people who never get Home Care or go to LTC because they can afford not to use the public system. That is just 1% of the population and they are often the most influential in who is elected.

I left the field as a PSW after 10yrs. I loved my job but it was just too demoralizing. You’re used up and spit out, just like the clients. And this was before COVID hit! Now PSWs and other field staff are literally putting their lives at risk and the companies and Canadian govt you work for still don’t care about you. I switched to work behind the scenes in scheduling and the problems are exactly the same. It scares me to think what I’ll have to do to make sure I have care when I’m a senior

So much gratitude to Psw’s who do this for the clients. They receive heat from the families irritated by not getting proper care. Also the unreasonable expectations from the company’s they work for. You get into this profession because you have a heart to help people. They end up being burnt out in many cases on both ends. My heart goes out to the people needing good care. My strength and support goes out to the good hearted Psw’s working as hard as they can for the clients. Better companies will come out and hopefully the current companies get their acts together.

I worked as a PSW and suffered burnout after awhile you don't even get much support from your own agency, sometimes time is not enough while some clients/family pretend there's more time to do task but in reality you're already out of time. But yes, some workers come late and leave early while had to complete or exceed the time frame because wanted to finish my job before leaving.

Thank you for exposing this!! I'm a Psw in hospice care. A lot of my residents either had home care or came from hospital and the horror stories of care are all true!!. Psws need more money bottem line.

Whatever you do, as a Bayshore employee, do not send your love ones to this company. I could definitely say that it is the worst company I have ever seen and I work for them.

Thanks for exposing to inconsiderate companies in Ontario. How appalling, shame on these businesses and our government for allowing this kind of care to our elderly. If shame meant more in our culture they should be publicly shamed and disgusted for their treatment of PSWs and clients. I imagine these people at the top wouldn't want to receive the same kind of care when they need home care... Do unto others as you would want done unto you. My sister worked as a PSW for a bit for one of these companies. It was okay but yes, the situations presented here aren't too far off, especially the double booking and not thought out paths.

@@nahtan14 Few people want the existing system in Home Care with limitations on what they can and can't do - pushing people into Long Term Care. The reason is manifold and staffing issues is but one of them. There is a reason why people leave this field - low poor pay, lack of full time work so they work more than 2-3 jobs, better ways to care as unheeded by employers, way too many managers to workers. We know there are far less costly and superior care being given in other countries - the difference is people are unaware and settle for less than they deserve.

20:years ago at a medical conference in Toronto …a health care minister promised that more money for community care will be put in place ..this never happened … I am a caregiver to my husband ..at first about 8 years ago we had PSW coming into the home the girls and men were very good and got care that my husband needed But as soon as the private retirement homes we’re opened ..it all when down hill .. These places took away from the community home help …so the community suffers The government needs change big time …the PSW should be payed a decent..wage $23.00 dollars per hour ….the PSW are being pushed to the limit ..working long hours ..the lack of new PSW …many can not afford the $6000.00 training ..the Government needs to paid to get people ..their own cars are used ..and the gas has got higher ….but no extra money to help them …Many girls have left as the hours are long ..have no home life ..they are just burnt out …many don’t won’t to leave but the PSWs have no choice ..many don’t have a weekend off …work very day …no breaks for lunch …l have seen good caring PSWs so tired The powers that be must look after them …because if the government does not ..it will break into …

I've been with paramed for almost 3 years. Last year I was denied my vacation because according to the union agreement, I have to make my request by a certain date. Recently, I found out that our union contract expired in 2019, so maybe I could have fought for a vacation? (Anyone know?) Since starting with Paramed, they paid 42 cent a km and that hasn't changed even though EVERYTHING is going up. Anyway, according to the union, 72% of psw's will be leaving home care very soon. That should get Ford's attention!

Why does the public tolerate the poor care system when other countries (we all are people) have been doing a far superior and less costly way of caring for people as they age in place and in Home Care for more than 30 years? I have talked and posted about changes that will make a huge difference but those who get funding from govt. and news coverage are far more visible on TV, etc. They are coming around to promoting better care but if you are govt. funded even as non-profits, you aren't going to bite the hand that pays you. We know what better care is and can be here in Canada, I need public support to make it happen NOW.

Can people really not see the complexity here? How many people want to be PSW workers? Even at $100K per year? It’s tough work. Invest more? In what? Robots? Aging population? Profits vs unions & bureaucracy. Families need to step up or expect taxes to go through the roof.

Do I agree that psws need to be paid more yes do I agree closer attention needs to be paid to travel expenses but my branch of bayshore has been very fair to me and others under their employ

Paramed cancels on my father weekly. When they do show up, they walk in, give him pills and turn around and walk out, 60 seconds maximum. I have complained and told them I have it all on video. No response. I had no idea that they still get paid for a no show.

Being short staffed is literally the norm especially in home care. Also home care staff are sooo underpaid thus why some just call in sick or don’t show up. Companies refuse to hire more people bc they want to safe money. Not the health care workers fault but companies

They do in the US, but family caregivers sometimes cannot cope alone if the senior is in the late stages of dementia or Parkinson's and similar illnesses.

There's a Canadian woman on youtube who does this. Sonia L. of Truther Girls channel has a paid full-time job as the carer for her wheelchair-bound husband. He DOES live in a different flat from her, but in the same building, if that makes a legal difference.

I am a PSW who just left homecare because it is broken. I would love to go to Denmark to learn a better way. I'm at a retirement home now, but my first love is homecare. Wish I could be part of fixing our system.

Its more a failure of the Ontario government in this case, the federal government cant overstep the proveniences own health care policies (they have fought long and hard for this).

We need the exposure but this has been going on for decades - so why not demand change now and go for what other countries have been doing for decades? There is a reason why govt. is not moving in the right direction and the public is supporting them by voting for poor Home Care , equally poor Long Term Care again and again. Those of us who try to bring awareness to a better, cost effective community based care by nurses (minimal management), person-directed organized and supported care in one's home. Aging in Place needs this to work properly, optional housing with in communities is needed. Let us not time and time again put people in power who have a reason not to listen to the people.

Long Term Care beds are needed to house the people occupying acute hospital beds and who require more care than home-care can provide. Many patients require someone to help them 24/7 and cannot live alone. However, the “for profit” home-care providers are well described in this Marketplace episode.

Call them and demand a raise. I did that a few months ago and they finally gave me a raise. It was only a dollar. But it was better than nothing. I still work for them. But I am looking for another job.

Please keep exposing stories surrounding this until change happens. Home care was a real blessing until about 10 years ago. It should still be but somewhere along the line it flipped. Now it impacts so many negatively and causes so much stress in people's lives. But hey, the bottom line on these service providers is looking good! Down with profits over people. There are many waiting for placement in care facilities and not enough beds - but these aren't folks that want to be home, they are families that lack home support and are forced to put their loved ones into hospital to expedite their placement

it be a lot cheaper to get a private care,.you get to know the worker..you'll know right away in a few days if they are the right match who is good with the patient,.there are some good ones left out there, that are not mean, or are thieves,.

You need more training, $25/hr pay, pay for all work, pay for time between clients, gas cards, and paid benefits. PSWs are a treasure.

We get .45 a km, travel time, paid benifits that stop at age 65, no pension, 3$ top up is permanent, no lunch break, and I am making $20.00/hr. We are so short staffed, and have some very under qualified,uncaring PSW'S. As in the video, clients complaints are ignored.

I’m paid $21 hr plus the $3.00 enhancement and .38 cents for kms and for me I’m thinking of leaving after 20 plus years because of the staff in the office, they mistreat you if you speak up for yourself or clients and cut your hours and I’m always having pay problems and sitting in a parking lot for almost 3 hours waiting for my next client is unacceptable when there’s apparently a shortage…can’t trust the agencies at all, they are being paid regardless and would rather it that way because they don’t have to pay the PSW.

This market for homecare is ripe for disruption since the big homecare companies are in bed with the politicians and no one is paying PSW and nurses more. Just like big cabs companies that dominated the market before uber. It was ridiculous before that to lease a cab license and car in Ontario before Uber costs $100,000+ a year. PSW should set their own price and run their own home care schedules. If PSW is paid better, more people would enter the profession to work. Right now they’re being exploited by large corporations.

Right! And doctors could prescribe the total number of hours a patient needs for daily care. That prescription would be sent by the doctor to a website/app. Patients or their families would sign up and then schedule PSWs through the app. The salary would be transferred directly to the PSW from the website/app. By automating the system, millions could be saved.

Hi there… you are obviously caring and a solution focussed people who want to do right by the vulnerable people in your society. That is great. I am one of the “lucky“ people who receive three hours of home care per day. I am not an average client because I am under 50. The average client is older and their caregivers are completely overwhelmed with caring for their family member. They do not have the ability or the time to schedule on an app. The issue hair is much larger. We have all been paying into O’Hare with our taxes for decades and those dollars in Ontario are lining the pockets of for profit companies That are completely unaccountable. Big companies make big donations to political parties in order to get big contracts…This is also healthcare, so it needs to have government oversight and regulation on who can provide care and ensure the quality of training and care that people receive. The government already regulates who can drive a car through licensing so taxi drivers get covered there. Keep brainstorming and caring! But in the meantime please make it clear to your government representatives that this has to change and get out and vote😊

@@Kelly201022 Right now, I had to set up a business through the CRA to hire 2 private PSWS and deal with an accountant to do payroll, send the pay to the staff, and submit the monthly remittances. Having an app where all of this is automated would cut down on so much work for me. The schduling would be simple as my family member needs 24/7 care. We also have 3 hours a day of government PSW "help," but these people usually come when our private PSWs are there, and the company won't offer any changes. They decide the schedule based on what's convenient for them. I said why don't they send the same person to work 7 or 8 hour shifts, but they won't do this even though it would help us a lot with costs and also help their staff not have to run around from here to there.

Soooo ... you stay at home to avoid being put in a seniors warehouse like Extendicare but they found a way into the homecare business. Then they deliver useless care that forces you into one of their residences anyway? What qualifications do these workers have? Who pays for the gas and wear and tear on what looks like private vehicles?

Unfortunately there are unqualified,uncaring PSW'S working for our company. I've been with this company for 10 years, and urge clients who have had lousy PSW'S to call LHIN and complain, not the provider. There are alot of us that do go the extra mile for our clients.

Yes it is insane. My mother is a PSW but just cares so much about people. Was always helping kids ok our street that had fallen of a bike etc, she loves the people she works with to take care of, and because of a vision issue isn’t able to get a drivers license. She used to work in a few long term care but they were two good ones where they actually took care of people. Then she worked for an agency. But they would pay for travel time, and didn’t double book her. GEM I believe it was called. Yes it’s private and for profit, but it was run better to my knowledge than a lot of the giants here shown who just don’t care. She now works on the school bus as the attendant for disabled children. She always calls them “my kids” and the seniors she used to in home care for “my man” or “my lady”. Like these people were a part of her family. She would cook for them, clean their apartments, bathe them etc etc. She took so much enjoyment for caring for them, and still does with her new job. It’s a shame people look at it as a quick college course to get into something. Not because they have a passion to help.

Ralph, I am a certified PSW and the female in this story. Along with my certification, I also obtained 7 other relevant certificates to perform my duties. I can tell you that not all PSW'S are not certified which is why we have been fighting the government for years to be regulated just like nurses. Our attempts have fallen on deaf ears and the results are unqualified, inexperienced individuals caring for our Elderly. To answer your other 2 questions, I pay for the gas, the company reimburses me no where near what I spend or if gas prices go up as they have recently and I pay for the maintenance on my vehicle. Hope this helps you understand a little more. :)

@@gwenstokes9851 My question on qualifications was more about the rate of pay as it appeared to be the usual industry dodge of underpaying and de-skilling a workforce. The employees need to be qualified and compensated accordingly.

You're only doing Ontario. I can assure you, it's far worse here in Nova Scotia. Both home and long term care. Nothing will change because the government sees the sick, the disabled and seniors as useless since they can no longer work. 1 staff per floor in the night at a nursing home is the norm here.

I delt with Bayshore when my nana was living with me. They were absolutely horrible! Bayshore is all about making money and has no care for their clients. The admin staff was extremely rude and I was so so disappointed with the whole system!!! I pray that I never have to deal with them again. I complained but never got any response! It was horrible for my Nana and for me!!!!!! Home Care Ontario speaks on behalf of Bayshore???????? I'm 81 and disabled, my 76 yr. old husband is beginning to have mobility problems. He is my sole caregiver. We've decided that when we can no longer take care of each other, we'll end our lives rather than a nursing home or hit and miss home care.

Wow. I am so happy that people are finally starting to speak out. I do work for Bayshore home health and I could not believe the things they get away with. No overtime pay. No training. No three dollar raise from the government for their employees, instead deep pocketed the money

Pay attention: A day at the hospital costs $730, long term costs $210 and homecare cost $90. That means doctors and nurses can be paid better by the hospital, long term care staff can get a somewhat better pay. unfortunately homecare caregivers will be paid wages that they can't live on. Remember, the care company is being paid about a fraction of a change.

I became a PSW in Ontatio just before the turn of the last CENTURY. The pay was between $9.50 to $12.00, I had two PT jobs to make ends meet as a PSW.... No benefits! The gas was cheaper per litre and maintenance on my small two door vehicle was barely manageable. The missed visits were very common then as well, especially if a client was considered "high mantinence". The 6PM and later visits were the worst hit especially in the winter months. Care for the people that made Canada attractive for present day Canadians should not just come down to profit. I am deeply ashamed that nothing has changed in over 20 years.

I have just went through training to be CHW through Baysore I do agree with people being over booked low pay and schedule problems,communication with office staff is none existing I feel badly for clients but we do our very best to care for our clients in the time line we are given !!!

As someone who works for the government branch at bayshore as a psw.. I'll be the first to say you'll always hear about 100% of the bad things and 2% of the good. In 5 years I've never had a crazy experience like this or no anyone that has. My clients love me and bayshore. Maybe these reports are refering to bayshores private sector which is a completely other company using the same name.. also in Denmark it blows my mind that they have the staff to provide 10 hours a day to patients. In ontario the staffing shortage is only getting worse and making barely enough to pay the bills.. Gas is double and we recieve no extra compensations.

Here in USA...caregivers are not supported by insurance. My parents with dementia could use the help...but even with their very comfortable income...they can't afford to pay for in-home caregivers. In-home Caregivers are paid 30-35 dollars PER HOUR. They took out a long term care policy years ago...that isn't worth a lot in today's $$$. It only covers facility care...so they are screwed. Average rate for one person in a facility here in California costs 8000 per month...with added costs for medication and more intensive care. 8000 per month... basically covers a bed, meals and oversight. That's it. We have two parents who will need a facility eventually. When that time comes...they have to sell their home and turn it over to Medicare to have their fees paid to be in a facility. My siblings and myself cannot afford to pay that either. The system is definitely broken...with no help in sight.

I worked for Bayshore and left quick! treating people like peace work is not something I want be part of. They treat their employees just as disgusting as they treat patients too. People who sit back and say nothing will one day become part of this system and see first hand what it's like when we sit back and let the government put profit before people.

I've been trying to contact the producer of this program...probably not tech savvy enough. Sevetal years ago I wrote a book covering this topic and introduced it to 200 Ontario libraries. I got zero requests for copies. Quite frankly, nobody cares!

All these agencies are trying their best to support. Theres alot of people in need. Demanding families get their way easier. It's not fair because some of those patients can be ok with minimal support. These resources get misused & the patients in actual need get less hours. The families also need to take the responsibilities of their loved ones when possible, with agencies supplementing to prevent burn out. Luckily, I have come across bunch of families that are very thankful for the services home-care can provide (SLP, OT, PT, PSW, nursing + medical supplies) covered by OHIP! This video is not the whole truth!

Agencies make a lot of profit from this. The families shouldn't be described as demanding if they request a reasonable schedule. Having different people show up for an hour at whatever time works best for the agency is not helpful to clients or PSWs. Glad we took away the funding the agencies received and will now use that government/LHIN money to hire private PSWs, who much prefer the steady hours and reduced commute...as well as the option to bring their dog to our home.

There is no shortage of psw. There is 96,000 people with psw certificates, who took government money to train as psw but are not working in the field. There is no oversite on checking on people to ensure they actually work in the industry once they leave the private colleges offering these programs

Because hospital and nursing homes pay more but cost more to give the same care even if home care PSWs did get paid a similar wage as those in nursing homes and hospitals.

Never off on a holiday. Have to work alternate weekends. Have to be available to work morning, afternoon and evening to achieve 8 hours a day. No guaranteed hours. Reduced travel pay on time between clients. Anything else you would like to know?

Marketplace should look into homecare not just in the toronto area. In Northwestern Ontario it's even worse. The Home Care works are having to drive over 2 hours each way to get to some of their clients (from the city to a town) daily. They even try to schedule family members into the rotation to help out to reduce having the actual worker needing to show up. Manitoba isn't much better with their homecare. Even when you can go straight to their "clinic" for your wound care appointments it's not consistent and neither is the care.

I I'm a Bayshore client in Newfoundland I've been without a worker in over 2 weeks and it's really freaking bad. I have no idea what to do or who'd contact to rectify the situation. Is not just Bayshore that's understaffed it's every home care company in St John's. I don't know what to do if anyone has suggestions it'll be greatly appreciated. It's really frustrating I'm a young adult with a disability the requires Home Care three days a week and because of my Limited amount of hours I'm not enticing enough for workers to take.

There should be a system where PSWs can be paid directly, I don't get why there is a need for a middleman (agency) to snatch majority of the funding. Just create a system to pay the care provider directly.

There is..kind of. It is called Family Managed Home Care and the Central LHIN handles it. They don't encourage it as much as they should. They give a maximum of 28 hours a week but that's for those who are 100 % dependent on others. They reimburse $28 hour, which has to cover costs. Getting into the program is very time consuming. Huge 100 page information report to read, lots of forms and documents to fill out online before and every month. Meetings with administrators, etc. But, at least one can pay for some of the care needed (either as a direct employer or by hiring through an agency) and the PSWs prefer this arrangement rather than running around all over the city.

man i had to pause this the gall of a company with 32M in profit saying they need gov't money to pay their staff, paying low wages for such a demanding job, the irony of the pandemic is medical companies had their highest earnings yet in this prosperous for them's time the amount of bad news and unscrupulous practices has only increased...highlighting that it wasn't about needing money but exploiting opportunity

I think market place was not aware there is a mobile Ultrasound and X Ray service for nursing home residents which is completely neglected by the Govt , This is a very help full tool but grossly underpaid by Ministry and as s result Resident of nursing homes has to wait not days but weeks to get essential services. The myth of privatization being efficient seems to be truly proven as a myth here. When companies can they'll let customers and employees get run over by a bus to pocket some more cash.

I’m just going to say I think our district does a marvelous job with what they have to deal with. I know there is a major shortage of trained PSW’s and often the PSW’s decide for their own reasons, they don’t feel comfortable visiting certain clients. They’re leaving this occupation left and right. ITS A HARD JOB! It isn’t always the PSW’s. The businesses operators are struggling also. Pandemic has thrown the whole system in a crisis. They are having to cross all their T’s and dotting all their I’s. Communication suffers while workers try to prioritize the care. I say…. Give them all a break. Including Ford’s government. They’re also trying to catch up.

Just warehouse older people by building expensive retirement homes for, for profit companies. Instead of giving them proper, well paid people to care for them so they can enjoy their golden years!!!!!!!
