Musk oxen are not the only charismatic creatures perfectly suited to the wind-blasted, tundra of the Alaskan Arctic. Meet Joel Berger, Wildlife Conservation Society senior scientist, Colorado State University professor - as well as expert on hoofed mammals. In addition to gathering photos to track how fast musk oxen are growing, Berger conducts a seemingly hazardous test: He dresses up as a grizzly bear, approaches the herd, and gauges their reactions. Berger uses this unusual technique to find out whether the presence of more male oxen makes the herd safer from bears.

Any animal that's as tall as I am is incredibly fascinating. Muskoxen, horses, elephants, donkeys, honestly anything larger than like 5'5" is just always so big and foreign and beautiful

Muskoxen are actually surprisingly small. :-) And consider that a lot of that is fluff. Donkeys aren't very big, either. www.alaska.org/photos/gallery3/var/albums/anchorage-photos/anchorage-tours/Musk-Ox-Farm/Musk-Ox-Farm-05.jpg

While hunting is not 'my thing', so I view it as more of an outsider, I can't imagine much challenge in hunting animals that curious, and with an instinct to clump, rather than run. One could practically walk within spearing range...

This gives me an idea: what if homini realized the same thing that standing and fighting is more effective than scattering for their life? And as this behavior flourished they not only began fighting off as a single entity but instead turned aggressive and attacked the predator instead and if a predator would manage to kill one of the attackers they wouldn't let the fight end but lash out in an act of revenge denying a kill. This would explain our hostile and vengeful nature compared to other species.

I guess you'd have to approach downwind as a grizzly or caribou, as an ape smells like neither.

The Muskox (Ovibos moschatus) is the only extant member of the genus Ovibos, it is one of the only two extant members of the tribe Ovibovini, the other being the Takin (Budorcas taxicolor), which is found only in Central Asia, Ovibovini is one of the three tribes that now belong to a new subfamily called Ovibovinae, the others being the tribes Hemitragini (Tahrs) and Naemorhedini (Gorals, Serows, Chamoises, and Mountain Goat), Ovibovinae is a subfamily of bovids that lives mostly in cold-climate habitats, it is actually known that Ovibovinae is most closely related to the subfamilies Hippotraginae (Grazing Antelope) and Alcelaphinae (Hartebeest, Wildebeests, Hirola, and Tsessebees).

Aren't grizzlies hibernating in the winter time? That would confuse me if I was a muskox. Anywho nice video and beautiful creatures!

I can not understand why people feel like laughing (in a PUT-DOWN attitude) when observing a willing effort by someone to suffer extreme cold (or whatever circumstance may be required) to study and gain unknown facts or statistics. It is a SAD human frailty and non empathetic characteristic and It leaves a bad taste in my mouth to read such comments. I have learned about an animal that i had never heard of....let alone had the privilege to watch being recorded. Just want to say Thank you to these brave souls researching for the good of mankind's knowledge and future.

Oh look! A lone elk with a floating head, five legs, dressed in outdoor gear, walking like it's crippled, and smelling an awful lot like that weird bear thing that was following us around last week. Is this really scientific?

What do they eat? When do they sleep? Do they migrate or have a territory? How do they choose a mate? How often do they give birth? You dressing up in costumes doesn't tell me anything about them. As a matter of fact, you asked a whole lot more questions than you answered.

I know it has been two years since you commented, but wanted to reply: I’m not a hunter, but since humankind has altered and messed up the ecology of the planet, there are species and ecological situations that hunting can help rebalance, until we get our priorities straight, and take swift action to slow global warming.
