Dr. Stone explains what motivates men who commit serial sexual homicide and whether or not they are born evil.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MICHAEL STONE:
Michael Stone is professor of clinical psychiatry at the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. From 2006 to 2008, Stone hosted the series Most Evil on the Discovery Channel, for which he developed a "Gradations of Evil Scale" to rank homicides from 1 to 22 based on their level of evil. He has written 10 books, including The Anatomy of Evil.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TRANSCRIPT:
Question: What is it like inside the mind of a serial killer?
Michael Stone: Well, men who commit Serial Sexual Homicide, which is what the public usually is referring to when they talk about serial killers as opposed to nurses and doctors that kill patients in hospitals, “Angels of Death,” etc. The serial killer, like Ted Bundy and John Wayne Gacy, and David Parker Ray, and those people, almost all of them, more than 90% meet criteria, hard criteria for psychopathy. Almost all of them are sadists. Meaning that they meet criteria for sadistic personality as it had been described in the official psychiatric manual, where there’s enjoyment of the suffering of others as a key quality, and a love of control and domination of others, etc. Half of them are loners, men that can’t make long relationships with others. So in effect, some of them use serial killing as a way of having a one-night stand where they rape the woman and then kill her to destroy evidence; dump their body along the road or whatever, like Ed Kemper out in California. And then go on to the next because they are incapable of sustained romantic, intimate relationship.
Some of them, seeking revenge-revenge is a motive in some of them, like Debarr Labon in Texas who had been brutalized by his father and his mother... so they're constantly getting back at the parents who abused them or neglected them. That would probably be true of Leonard Lake that had this torture place he built in a remote area of California.
And another motive... killing a specific parent over and over, but not actually killing the parent. For example, when I interviewed Tommy Lynn Sells on death row in Texas, he had been neglected, abused, neglected again by his mother, never knew his father; terrible, terrible childhood. And he went around killing about 70 people, most of them women. And when I asked him, I said, “Tommy, you know, it sounds to me like maybe these women were like symbols or duplicates of your mother. Did you ever have a thought about, you know, killing your mom?” And he told me, ”Anyone touch a hair of her head, I’ll kill them in a minute. You only got one mom.”
So that was a very important point that I see over and over in these men. They have the same kind of loyalty and love of a parent even if the parent was abusive and horrible, that you can whip and hurt and yell and scream at a child, but if you’re the mom or you’re the dad, there still going to love you. They may hate you as well, but they’re going to love you. So, he never touched a hair of his mother’s head, instead he did symbolically get back at her through these other murders.
Question: Are serial killers born or created?
Michael Stone: Important question because there’s no one simple answer. There are a few serial killers, six or seven in my very large series, who were adopted at birth into normal homes, never abused, never neglected. But who, from adolescence on became violent and then in their 20’s embarked onto the career of serial sexual homicide that you can only ascribe to some genetic flaw along the lines of deficits in the amygdala or the prefrontal cortex that I had spoken about. Gerald Stano would be an example of such a person who killed 40 women and was finally executed in San Quentin.
There are other men who were raised in fairly good homes, or even rather normal homes, but who suffered a head injury that affected these key areas in the frontal lobe, such as Richard Starett in Georgia. He was raised in a wealthy home. He went around killing 10 women after he had married and had a daughter...

There are several reasons why people commit acts of violence. In the case of serial killers, factors such as sexual abuse, mental illness, and brain injury/trauma have been known to contribute to psychopathic and deviant behaviors. I find it utterly fascinating the minds of serial killers and people with deviant behaviors. I would love to be able to delve into their minds and see what makes them tick, to see what makes them different from "normal" people.

"There are several reasons why people commit acts of violence. It is no coincidence when this practice became the "norm" in the first half of 20th century and two decades later, we have more serial killers than we can handle.

When he said some men were ‘adopted’ and never abused but they still turned into killers. I think the issue is with adoption itself. The fact that he was separated from his birth mother is enough to turn him into a serial killer. Sometimes separation can be traumatizing even to new borns. Edit: Let me just clarify this 4 year old comment. I meant adoption COULD cause trauma, not that adoption in itself is bad. The process of separation MAY cause trauma, and they glossed over that in this video.

I thought also that could be a reason, with also the genes. People forget, how important bonding is, oxitocin, breastfeeding, and holding a baby on your skin and when they are born, sleeping with them in contact with your body. And during the day, the same. In a babybag. Gentle baby massages. And just be gentle with gentle eyes looking at them. And bottle feeding is totally not the same as having total body contact, while breast feeding. At least 19 months. Life is so delicate. Babies are so delicate. I see people, changing dipers in a emotionless rough clinical way, giving the bottle, holding the baby the same way. Babies feel everything. Even the voice, how you speak to them, the words, how you look to them... Taking the baby away should be the last option. But seldom it turns out to be positive. So adopting babies, little todlers and so on is not positive. Sad. Very, sad.😪

This brings to mind Charles Whitman, who killed his wife and mother before killing fourteen more people, and wounding over thirty others. He left a note that requested an autopsy after his death to determine if there were a physiological reason for his acts. At autopsy, a brain tumor was found that might possibly have contributed to his actions.

Charles Whitman suddenly decided to shoot a bunch of people all at once. The tumor was probably effecting the same part of the brain that is defective in psychopaths. It's similar to the railroad worker in the nineteenth century who injured his brain and basically turned into a different person.

I have a theory that alot of serial killers are suscetible to becoming sociopaths and in their adolescense, abuse and trauma can make them see the world differentely and angry. And at that point, something changes in their brain which makes them desire power as they didn't have growing up. They no longer care about anything and their abuse reflects what they do to their individuals. So in short as the joker said, "madness is like gravity".

But Ed Kemper did kill his mother after killing his grandparents and numerous female college students. He stated in the interview that his mother was a primary source of abuse. Psychopaths born with different brain structure and function and childhood abuse and neglect can increase of likelihood of them becoming a killer. Though not always. even if a psychopath was raised in an average family there is a still a risk for them to become one. Abuse studies, abnormal psychology has to be introduced in schools.

Just my thoughts...the part of the brain that has sympathy is damaged . Many suffer abuse ,but don't kill. The one thing I seen them all say is they don't have that thing that makes them care or feel ...like other people. Can a person be abused enough to kill ... I say yes ,but I think again there is damage to brain. Can a person see and be exposed enough to violent acts to become serial killers? I think so just because they become numb to seeing it. I think this is area we should look in brain ,for potential serial killers part that would have sympathies ... Is that area damaged or different looking.

Take two siblings and put them both through identical severe childhood trauma and it's statistically more likely that neither will become serial killers because they're so rare....takes a special combo of DNA plus trauma to even get the slim chance to create a monster. Its just not common , thank God.

@alflayla5 Social and cultural factors actually change the physical development of the brain. Because boys and girls are socialized and enculturated differently, gender differences can result. So then if a man and a woman are subjected to the same type of trauma, their responses may be the same or may be different depending on how strongly they were socialized in their gender role.

You could've hated it do much that you remember the feelings that it gave you....now if you have empathy, being able to imagine how someone else might feel....you're capable of breaking that cycle. I've done that with my father and subsequently my son...its not easy fighting nurture nor nature.

Celine M I definitely see your point. And yes, you and many others who are in 'predator vs. prey cycle' mindset, are similar with serial killers. When I was a kid, I used to think like that. Unfortunately (or fortunately) I didn't had anyone smaller than me, because generally I was always the smallest. But when I was 26 I had a turning point that this is all wrong. So I stop doing or think like that. Since then, if someone abuses me, I take a stand against the abuser, NOT to take on innocent people. It's hard, but I chose not be a coward. No matter how big the abuser is, wrong is wrong. We are born to love each other. So you see, serial killers are coward inside.

Hey doc! What should someone who feels strongly about acting out a serial killing fantasy, but not to rape, just to kill as many humans as possible, do about it??? Been to top psyc centers, hospitalized over and over, had shock treatment threatened but they never follow through. No meds on the market can help. Am I destined to be bad? Is there no chance I can stop thinking about it until I do it?????

Question: do psychopaths know there is something wrong with them? In other words do they figure out they don’t feel the same way as other normal humans?
@ardi1606
@ardi1606 Год назад
They do. They lack empathy, not intelligence.
@ScooterFarts
@ScooterFarts 8 месяцев назад
Yes. Insane people don't have the capacity to become serial killers as they lack the capacity to formulate or evade detection.
@ScooterFarts
@ScooterFarts 8 месяцев назад
@ardi1606 Not all lack empathy. Empathy can also be controlled or filtered. Especially if the mind is in a near constant state of flight or fight, rage etc. PTSD for example. It is a variable and based on the person and circumstances rather then the actual act alone.

So we know the brain of a killer is damaged but by law we give them death penalty because they know what they did was wrong.
@markc7955

That’s what I’m wondering. If you get hit on head today and start fantasising about rape I’d that your fault. Should you go to jail for that. Scary you could change like that through no fault of your own.

Typically they are said to Not care about others emotions or cant feel for them , but care for there own emotions such as enjoyment and whatnot. They dont meant emotions are dulled like depression (everything is grey and unvibraint) they mean their care for others is heavily dulled

@alflayla5 Very true. When social and cultural factors come in, things get very complicated and difficult to analyze. Brain injuries can have some very strange effects though. A personality is much more fragile than one might imagine. A brain injury can cause a perfectly normal and functional person to develop bizarre and abnormal behaviors or to experience an extreme shift in personality. There was a good article on the topic in Slate magazine a few months ago called "Naughty by Nature".

Surely females suffer many similar circumstances and injuries. Are there hypothesis as to why we do not see as many female serial killers amongst the general population? Makes me think the etiology cannot be as simple as psychological and/or neurological trauma.

@bigahhdude2714

You have to find enjoyment to be called a serial killer so a contract killer is just a killer they don’t personally have feelings towards it and most likely wouldn’t do it if it wasn’t for hire

What they need to be doing is taking MRI of all these serial killers brains and comparing them to normal people's brains ... Also their DNA. I noticed something on some serial killers ... I have looked at face features and body size. I think some of them might have acromegley. Which may be another area they need to look hormones which change personality ,caused by brain tumors.
