Unboxing Arrow Video's monumental "Inside the Mind of Coffin Joe" Blu-ray set.
I have some material included in this set, so Arrow sent me two complimentary boxes. They did not ask me to do a review. I'm not sure they even know I have a RU-vid show. This is not really a "review" of the content in the set. It's just an unboxing video, and an excuse to spend more time talking about Coffin Joe, my thoughts on his work and legacy, and my recollections of participating in Embodiment of Evil. Initially, I was not going to post a video on this blu-ray set. But after watching dozens of other RU-vidrs offering their thoughts, I thought I should give mine.
At 31 minutes into the video, I mix up the names of Mojica's biographer André Barcinski and his producer Paulo Sacramento. Both men were incredibly important figures in the final decades of Mojica's life. Barcinski wrote the biography Maldito (Damned) and directed the documentary based on the book. Sacramento produced Embodiment of Evil and helped Mojica lift that project out of purgatory and carry it to completion. I have added subtitles noting the mistake.

Apparently, they tried. The producer wouldn't negotiate with them. It's ridiculous. It reminds me of Susan Hart and the AIP films she owns.

Well, the Coffin Joe set I already have is pretty good quality, but I actually don't have a copy of two of the movies in that set, so maybe I'll use that as an excuse to get it. Great review. I just have always felt Coffin Joe is one of the greatest horror movie creations of all time, and I hope new generations of fans will come to see that with the release of sets like these.

I'm glad the set is getting a lot of buzz. I hope people use this opportunity to sample Coffin Joe. I recommend you buy this set, regardless of what other set you already have. I have several DVD and VHS editions of these films, but this set is still indispensable.

Thanks for the video Mr. Castile! Anyone can do an unboxing but not many other people have the close relationship with Senor Marins that you had. This makes your unboxing really something special! It's a great boxed set, Arrow Video knocked it out of the park with this one. I too loved the reproduction of the business card for his funeral home!

Thank you! I don't want to oversell my relationship with Mojica. Obviously, his family members, friends, colleagues and students in Brazil were far closer to him than an American fan could ever be. I was lucky to have met him, worked with him on one project, and kept in touch with him online. The boxed set is a surreal object, much like Mojica's surreal body of work. It is uncanny that it even exists. I'm very happy to have these diabolical little boxes sitting in my house, and to know there are thousands more sitting in homes around the world. Mojica will never die.

It is an exciting set, I hope to one day get one, Bless You Mojica - what you created was as Iconic as the classic Monsters of Universal - slowly he is taking the position he deserves, as I have said before, I have no doubt he saw you as his Heir to the Character - no one understands the character as deeply as you do, any new Coffin Joe interpretation without you would be a waste of time.

Thank you. I wouldn't say no one understands him as I do, but I'm certainly a big fan. I don't think you can have authentic Coffin Joe without Mojica's involvement, any more than you can have authentic Star Wars without George Lucas, authentic Beatles without all four members, authentic Holmes without Doyle, or authentic James Bond films without someone named Broccoli producing them.

Glad you reviewed this! I was afraid you would pass on the subject since it is not toy related but given your passion for the character and your personal contribution to its legacy, I’m happy to see you dive into the set! Still hope you make a documentary or short someday utilizing all of the anecdotes from your written accounts years ago when you traveled to film.

I wasn't sure if I should cover it, as it did seem beyond the scope of this channel. But when I received the sets, I found the objects themselves so charming that I felt I could almost approach them as toys. It's a Coffin Joe box of fun. You can enjoy the set without actually watching the films. The box design and the artwork is so cool, the book is wonderful, the poster is fun...you can spend an evening "playing" with it without ever popping a disc in a player.

I hope they release another volume of Mojica's films, Bloody Exorcism, The Curse, Perversion, etc. There's so much more movies that needed to be in blu-ray discs!

There's definitely enough for a second volume. If Severin can release their Christopher Lee Eurocrypt boxed sets and Peter Cushing Curiosities set, then Arrow can release something similar for Mojica. It could include Trilogy of Terror, Exorcismo Negro, Perversion, A Praga, My Destiny in Your Hands, The Prophet of Hunger, perhaps episodes of his 2000's talk show. Ideally, it would include Demons and Marvels, but I know there are rights issues due to the music. That didn't stop the film from appearing in two Brazilian boxed sets. And of course, there are tons of unlicensed music cues in all the Coffin Joe films. I guess they're a little more conspicuous in Demons and Marvels.

Going through this set right now and I'm totally blown away from these transfers. Your flashback scene in Embodiment of Evil is fantastic btw. Has there been any further rumblings about the Elijah Wood remake? Sounds like a Herculean and unnecessary task to me.

Thank you! I haven't heard any rumblings. We probably won't hear anything until cameras roll. I hope someone involved has a genuine, ferocious vision for this project. I hope someone is driven to make it, do or die. Otherwise, it won't have integrity or authenticity. I cannot imagine how an English-speaking, American Coffin Joe will work. There is one director who has a relationship with Elijah Wood's company that I would trust to do this right - and that director is Panos Cosmatos. If I heard that he were directing, I would be cautiously optimistic.

The poster of a estranha hospedaria dos prazeres was painted by José Luis Benizio, Brazil 's greatest illustrator and pin up artist, he also painted the Inferno carnal and Exorcismo negro poster, you can find more of his art on line. I've never seen this censored version

Buy the set! If you don't have a TV and blu-ray player, buy them! This set is a good excuse to equip yourself! I don't have a 4K player or TV. But if this set were 4K only, I would have finally broken down and bought the gear in order to view this set.

I enjoyed the Coffin Joe boxset, I watched all the films. A few of the films have a very hippy vibe to them, the Finnis Hominis character is wild, he played it well. his Coffin Joe character is incredible. I wonder if more of his other films would get released one day. Thanks for sharing this unboxing, I thought about you when this boxset got released.

Thank you! Mojica's 60s/70s films have a strong hippy horror element. You can see something similar in US and UK horror from the same period, but there is a key difference. The US and UK films were made mostly by people who were not part of the hippy culture, but were trying to appeal to that culture in order to stay relevant and exploit that audience. Mojica's films actually come from within that culture They are part of it. They are not made by older movie executives standing on the outside looking in, giving us their interpretation. They are organically born from that social movement, at least the unique version of it that existed in Brazil.

I am sure that is Mojica from At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul! Since you have been hosting horror films for 50 years, and worked with all the greats back in the day, it is time for a boxed set of your film and TV material with your iconic face on the front.

People have talked about the parallels between the two characters. I don't know if Wes Craven had any knowledge of Coffin Joe. It's possible. But I suspect it was more coincidental than intentional. You can find characters with long talons in silent films, Nosferatu being a famous example. You can find characters that seem to exist in a dream world, or in people's imagination, and then seem to enter the real world. The Testament of Dr. Mabuse, for instance.

Lots of these unboxing videos are people that have never seen any of his films, nor that Portuguese is the written and spoken language, the name spoken wrong is still something I forget time to time. My fiancé speaks Zulu and Shona, I also have a habit of making it sound Spanish, either way, great opportunity to learn new things

I understand why/how they are mispronouncing his name, but it still makes me wince. I thought it would be nice to have one unboxing video where his name is pronounced as accurately as an English-speaking American can muster. Now that I've watched several of the bonus features in this set, I realize that most of the commentators have no idea how to pronounce his name...even though it's spoken aloud in the trailers and in Awakening of the Beast.
