In this video I teardown and inspect a CT12B turbocharger from the 1KZ-TE engine in my Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. I measure the play in the shaft and test the seals for leaks.
Note: I was incorrectly calling the "compressor" the "turbine" in this video! It is called the compressor on the intake side, and the turbine on the exhaust side!

Hey mate, I just started on a 1kzte that I'm using for a project Hilux and also upon lengthy engine inspection prior to start up I noticed radial play in the compressor side of the turbo. I realised that this is normal and when the motor is running the oil pressure centralises the clearance there. So all good.

Your check method for an oil leak is not correct. The turbo stops oil from getting past the piston ring seals by the turbo running. The high pressure exhaust on the turbine side and the high pressure air on the compressor side keep the oil in.Also there is a displacement ring inside that by spinning directs any oil past the piston rings to the drain side. The problem is your outflow is restricted by crud allowing high pressure oil to build up on the drain side which is more than the pressure outside the core.If you fill up a new turbo with oil,it will leak out when not turning.

And also, the up and down play will be taken up by oil pressure, the main concern is when there is in and out play, so he’s testing procedures were not really correct

I know this is a late message. I have a question if you have time. I am noticing a puff of smoke from the exhaust after idling and taking off at traffic lights. My thoughts are that the turbo seals may be on their way out. Your comment makes me think the low pressure on the compressor side at idle is allowing oil into the exhaust which is ejected out when applying throttle. Is this a reasonable thought? I’ve just done injectors and a decarb of the intake and am still getting this puff of smoke. Occasional noticeable smoke under load when looking in the headlights of cars behind me at night also.

Hi Mike, where can I get a genuine turbo? My 96 Prado is giving me some issues as well. My turbo was oiling as well.. and I don't have a local Toyota dealer who can assist with sourcing parts.

Hi Ishmael, I got mine on eBay but you could also try your local breakers yard. I would also join a local Land Cruiser Owners page on Facebook and ask whether anyone has one for sale, or knows of where you might be able to get one. I hope this helps!
