In this video I show you how to remove the turbocharger from the 1KZ-TE engine in my Land Cruiser Prado.
This procedure may be different from the workshop manual but it worked for me. Here are the steps I took:
1) Remove the air box ducting to the turbo.
2) Drain coolant from the engine y disconnecting the hose at the bottom left of the radiator. (I didn't do this in the video but I spilt coolant everywhere!)
3) Remove the pipe between the compressor outlet and the intercooler. A good pair of water pump pliers make removing the hose clamps much easier!
4) Disconnect the boost pressure sensor, air temperature sensor and vacuum lines to the throttle body.
5) Disconnect the intercooler from the throttle body. Again water pump pliers are invaluable!
6) Undo the two bolts that mount the intercooler to its mounting brackets and remove the intercooler.
7) Remove the exhaust manifold. When I fitted the exhaust manifold after filming this video I found that it is easiest to remove the studs from the turbo flange, and keep the studs in the head (sorry I didn't get this on camera!). This way the manifold can be easily slid into position and only 3 studs in the turbo manifold need fitted again.
8) Disconnect the turbo coolant lines.
9) Disconnect the transmission dipstick
** Move to underneath the car **
10) Disconnect the down pipe from the rest of the exhaust system. It will give you most clearance if you remove the whole first section of the exhaust (as shown in video).
11) Disconnect the oil return pipe from the block.
12) Disconnect the turbo mounting bracket from the block
** Move back to the engine bay **
13) Remove the coolant pipe that runs above the turbo.
14) Remove the turbo oil feel line by loosening the banjo bolt that secures it to the block.
15) Finally the turbo can be lifted up and out.
To refit, follow the instructions in reverse.

Just had a go at this on my Gen 3 Surf... what a mission. Like Eyeflynoosa said - The Banjo bolt was a bit of a bastard but once you get a rhythm with an open spanner its alright. My 1KZ has 185XXX KM's but looks about 20 years rougher than yours lol

That banjo bolt behind was a lot of fun. but i got it all out. thanks for the upload, helped heaps

What did you do to get it off? Stuck at this part

@@35jdub there was no easy way, either from above, from below or from the side. try to jack up the car, take wheel off and use an extension bar with socket to reach it. i cant remember exactly how i got it off now. there is a double sided washer on that banjo bolt , you'll likely need a new one of those.

I have my cylinder head off so was able to just reach in and use a spanner on it. thankfully wasnt on too tight!@@eyeflynoosa

@@35jdub thats good news. my head was back on when I had to remove the turbo, which made things difficult. getting it back on was "fun" also. Putting the bracket and the oil return (banjo bolt) on the engine first then place the turbo onto them, was easiest method I found. but whatever works for you

getting it back on was also "fun" for me today. Took 5 hours total.. didn't have the car on jack stands so had to start with the oil bracket lower bolts into block (was doing it blind and by feel only), and then did the transmission dipstick mount, then the banjo bolt which took 1.5hrs by itself... then finally the lower brack bolt into the block and finally mounted exhaust back on. what a nightmare. used zipties and a 2x4 plank to work as a hoist to hold up the turbo while my dad guided it around.. sheesh@@eyeflynoosa

Gday Mate, thansk for sharing this. Appreciate it! I'm about to under go this procedure. Do you think it's possible to do this job without removing the exhaust manifold? I plan to take my turbo out with down pipe still attached (hopefully out through the bottom) and reinstall the new turbo with the downpipe attached to save the headache of getting into the back downpipe nut (you know the one).... Would be nice to not have to pull all the exhaust manifold etc off... Thoughts?

How long has Andy Murray been involved with you? Just since lockdown or does he do it on the side? :D just kidding, great video and thank you very much. I'm looking to remove the exhaust manifold on my 1kz-te to fit an EGT gauge probe so this was very helpful :)

Is the banjo bolt the side bolt on that line? Or is it on the hose side?

How'd you get the back one on the manifold where it goes to the pipe I'm not sure what I should use to get it from the top.

Hey there, was wondering did u do any prep to the head studs prior to removing them, for example soaking the head studs with a penetrative spray of some sort. Cheers
@KZJ95R
@KZJ95R 4 года назад
Hey Murphy, I didn't have to use any penetrating spray as I recently changed the head on this engine, and the studs hadn't seized in. If you're having problems getting them out a bit of penetrating spray might help - or failing that you could try heating the area around the studs on the head with a propane burner. I find heat works wonders when trying to remove seized nuts and bolts on exhaust systems. I hope this helps!

Hello Make, I got a Land Cruiser Prado who leaks oil in turbo CT12B between cold area and hot area. I saw a video that show it could be drain oil or seal´s bad. Here in Brazil is terrible to find out repair kit for it. Could you indicate which parts numbers do repais this problem? Congrats to your video.

Hey mate! Is the intercooler aftermarket ? Did you fit it yourself?
@KZJ95R
@KZJ95R 4 года назад
Hi Kristian! So the Land Cruiser I have is the Prado and is a Japanese import. The Prado was sold in Japan and Australia and came with an intercooler as standard but without diff lock. In Europe they called it the Colorado, but instead of a factory fitted intercooler they included a rear diff lock. I don't see why you couldn't fit the intercooler set up to a Colorado if you replaced the cam cover and the intake ducting. I hope this helps!
