Monroe recommends inspecting your suspension about every 50K. You might also consider inspecting your suspension if you experience problems like bottoming out when going over bumps, excessive vehicle sway on turns, excessive nose dive when coming to a stop, uneven tire wear, or if you hear abnormal noises when going over bumps. Your suspension is an important vehicle system, take care of it, and it will take care of you.

I have no issues with you doing sponsored videos at all, all for it, you deserve sponsorship but at the same time it has a bad taste that it's "interfering" with the normal schedule and that these ads sound very scripted. I wouldn't mind on other days but when you come to a Friday where it's interesting to see what repair happens next, it's a bit of a shame it's not a "proper" video. Just my thoughts on the matter

I appreciate all the tips, I have picked up a lot of good info in numerous videos. Just give some info back, those are shocks not struts. Struts act as a control arms and are able to spin they are built different. It annoys me when going to buy parts and they are labeled incorrectly so if the aftermarket can't even get the name right, what sub part starts are they made from. Done with my little rant keep up the great videos and thanks!

Northeastern US winters have not been kind to that car; that strut looks like the only reason it's not oily is because the oil leaked out long ago and was cleaned off by salty slushwater.

Eric, I think many of your viewers outside of the US would appreciate if you put in some overlay graphics showing whatever imperial measure units you are using in metric. For example miles in kilometers, pounds in kilograms or foot pounds in Newton meters or whatever... I know all Americans hate the metric system, but for us metric users it's the other way around :) anyway it would be convenient for many of us, and I think it would add some extra value to your videos. Thanks for all the good stuff!

EricTheCarGuy i have a question not related to this video. I got a 1997 honda civic i changed alternator and battery yet everytime i drive voltage drops to 12.5 but if i put it on neutral or park it goes back up to 14.3 i checked fuses, belt and what not yet voltage never seems to stay anywhere near 14 when driving so i cant even turn run my radio up without voltage dropping close to 12.1 what could be causing my voltage to drop so much while i drive yet in park and neutral stay above 14. Even with music on

After watching the video, checking my 2008 Element and deciding to start looking for new front struts, I go to Monroe's website and find - they don't make them for my vehicle. The front parts they do make for the front have no warranty!! This is like when I had a Renault R16 and had to buy Renault's $$$ parts or parts made by a company I never heard of.

Eric, any idea whats bothering my W202 merc? 80k miles on it only. First, it doesnt want to go straight steers a bit to the right. Alingment checked couple times and didnt help. Second, sidewind really can make it unstable. Scary. Also rolls quite a bit on corners. I just installed new shocks/springs, no help really. Also been wiggling tires and joints, with hand an a prybar. Everythings tight. Only my front swaybar was a little loose but i fixed it, didnt help. It otherwise is the smoothest and most solid car ever, but im really fed up going down the highway and constantly fighting the car that wants to keep going right.

When I had wheel change (from 17" to 18") on my 04 TL, an Acura dealer in North Shore of Eastern MA threw away the sticker labels that had vital info on the tire pressure & what not. A shop should return everything in the box to customers. They also damaged one of the new wheels + its tire (sidewall), which wasted my time. They tried to deny the tire damage first (were honest about the wheel damage however) but I ended up speaking to the mx mgr and they covered the cost. However, I ended up installing a new tire on L/H front only, even though I told them to replace as a pair. If it were a Honda dealer in Japan, the dealer would be apologizing like mad and would have changed the tires as a pair (or all four) and would have given me a lot more compensations. I don't know how a tech could damage a wheel like that, unless he/she was ultra careless. Or, the mx mgr was an a-hole and pushed the techs so much that they couldn't focus on their job.

Problem I have when doing work under cars is that I can't tell what's a present problem and what was a past problem - it's all dirty and nasty as hell, especially cars from the north east where it snows like hell and then they salt the shit out of the roads.

heavydiesel In almost ALL states you have a yearly inspection. Funny enough a lot of states are considering doing away with those kind of tests which I think is a big mistake. I want everyone's steering and brakes to remain in good condition, it's not just their life on the line when they're driving, it's mine, too. I live in Florida now, and actually we have no inspections.

I had my car aligned in a shop last fall and the idiot who did it broke a stud off from one of the struts, where it bolts into the tower at the top and I was not informed.I noticed this spring when I was looking the car over, preparing for safety inspection. I fixed the problem by replacing the strut because I was in a hurry and I didn't have time to take it somewhere to have the bearing plate removed to change the stud. This really grinds my gears because this dishonest idiot's mistake cost me $95, and I didn't catch it early enough to force the garage to pay for their own mistake. I had just replaced both front struts two weeks prior to the alignment. I need to find another shop to get my alignments done now. Any chance there's a video on ETCG1 about shoddy mechanics? I'd be interested in hearing what you've got to say about crappy mechanics who do stuff like this to paying customers.

I'm not gonna yell unsubscribe or anything because I realize that you need to do these videos to make your living. However I do feel that this and the previous video should not have taken the place of this week's tool review or repair video. They should have been separate uploads. I'm sorry to say that I don't watch the question/answer videos, but I love the hell out of the tool reviews and the repair videos have been awesome as far as learning and progressing as a tech. Too late to change it now unfortunately and not that you would, as it's only one person's opinion, but it sucks having to wait another 2 weeks for a tool review and a week for a good long repair video.
@ericthecarguy
@ericthecarguy 9 лет назад
promech3888 Unfortunately I didn't have a tool review for this particular week. The tool I was reviewing didn't work out and I had to come up with another solution. I was going to release both of the Monroe videos on the same day and post a tool review as normal, but as stated, it didn't work out that way. I've already got the next tool review ready to go and the review after that I'll be shooting this week. That means at least for the next month, I'll be posting tool reviews at their regular times. Hi Eric, I have an Australian built VX SS commodore - 5.7ltr V8 with a automatic transmission ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holden_Commodore_%28VX%29#Commodore_SS) I live in a highly populated inner city area & my only parking option is to park it in the street which has a slope of about 5-10 degrees. I work away & sometimes i don't start it for 2-3 weeks & there seems to be a massive load on the starter motor when starting it after an extended period. Is this due to it sitting for long periods or the angle & the fluids settling @ the low point? If it's due to fluids, would there be any difference in the direction i park it? Thanks, Love your videos & keep up the good work.
@IIGrayfoxII
@IIGrayfoxII 9 лет назад
Hamid Karzai So after not driving it for 2 or 3 weeks it takes longer for it to start(cranks for a long time) That could be a battery issue. Batteries will slowly discharge over time and yours may be dead. Also with winter coming around, it will make the battery work harder. Battery world do free health checks on batteries, doesnt hurt to get it done.

Thanks man, you're right the LS1 is extremely reliable & is by far the best engine a guy on a budget could want IMO. It's not the battery, which brings me back to my first question about parking it on a slope & if it will have any affect on it either way? Might be fuel on the low side? ( tank is not usually on empty ) car has 190,00km and a full service history & is in mint condition. Thanks for all your input guys..

You should really replace those front struts. That lower spring perch looks pretty rusty and if that gives way you're certainly going to hear it pop and the unloaded spring could be a like a bomb going off causing all kinds of damage. Bet we can look forward to an axle replacement too, slinging that green goo everywhere. You didn't address why it's important to have good CV boots and not have tears, kinda skipped right over that. I'm sure we'll hear about it later but in an overview video why not take an extra 1 min to explain that?

Unfortunately I've had nothing but bad experience with the Monroe products themselves, but a great experience with their customer service. I had a set of Monroe-Matic shocks on my Grand Cherokee (I didn't buy them, I swear!), and within 20,000 miles, they were ALL blown. The Jeep was a commuter/family vehicle, so no offroad or hard driving. Their customer service was nice though, offered to replace them all for free. I declined since they were so cheap, but also because I didn't want another set of them. Bilsteins are on there now. My second experience was with the set that were on a used vehicle I purchased. I can't remember which model shock it was, but it wasn't Monroe-Matic again. From the receipt I found, they were roughly 10,000 miles old. Two were blown. I promptly tossed them and put on a set of KYB Gas-A-Just. Another used vehicle I purchased has Monroe shocks as well, I think Sensa-Trac, iirc. I haven't really had a chance to test them out, since the tires all have flat spots, but I do plan on replacing them with OEM (AC Delco) units. From my personal experience, and from all the complaints I see on enthusiast forums, I always recommending everyone staying away from Monroe shocks. At least the economy ones, as I have no experience with the premium ones. I would highly recommend everyone use OE shocks, or a reputable brand like KYB or Bilstein.
