This is an install and review of the Assan AG61 Model Taxiing Rectifying Gyro (aka front steering wheel gyro) used on the steerable nose wheel of RC airplanes, particularly EDF jets or any such plane that requires a long distance to take off. It keeps the front wheel pointing in the desired direction and the plane travelling straight and true down the runway. I installed it on the 80mm Freewing Avanti S EDF jet, but it can be used on any plane with a steerable nose wheel. I purchased at:
www.rc-castle.com/index.php?r...
I include 2' before' takeoffs from my archives without the gyro and two takeoffs with the recently installed gyro as well as a landing.
I thought it was worth every penny. (I paid for it; this isn't a sponsored video.)
Thanks

I ordered four of these for 4 problem child planes/EDF’s. I hope it fits. Not much room in the FL P-38 battery compartment and zero room near the flight controller and receiver.

As you can see, the unit is really tiny so you won't need much room to mount it. Good luck!

Hi Eric, nice video. Let me ask you a question, please. Right before landing when the retracts are down how the rudder behaves (it is on Y cable with a nose steering whell)? I guess the gyro tries to move it to keep direction. How does it feel?

Thank you for video but can that be used on a spectrum AS3X/ safe receiver? I’m thinking it may work since it doesn’t effect the rudder... correct?
@6SRC_YT
@6SRC_YT 3 года назад
It should work with that Spektrum Rx since the Assan steering gyro is connected to the front steering servo only and the rudder is separate and independent.

A lot of videos out on this. Yours was the only one I found that actually gave instructions on what connected where. THANK YOU!! I do have a question. Since this is Y-harnessed to your rudder, if you are using a gyro for your control surfaces, won't this interfere with that when landing? You will have 2 gyros operating at the same time.
@6SRC_YT

Thanks Jayson. When I bought it the first time I looked for a video and asked in the forums and everyone said it’s easy. Well may be after you’ve done it a few times, so I created this how- to for everyone, and now it is easy! The Y harness goes into the Rx and one side to rudder and the other to the Assan “Turning In”. Any gyro signal from the Rx helps the Rudder but doesn’t interfere with the Assan. Since the Assan is primarily functioning on take off traveling straight there isn’t any rudder gyro input to interfere. You won’t notice any issues.

Mike, sorry to bother you again. Bought a steering gyro for every tricycle landing gear plane or EDF I own. It's been a few weeks since I did the first 3 edf's, I've got the Arrows T-28 on the table at the moment. Everything is working for the steering gyro, front wheel is retracting, but when I tested the retracts, only the front wheel retracted. Then I noticed how stupid I am. Neither rear retracts are plugged in to the gear channel. (Gear Out has the front gear) What did I forget? Where do the Rear Gear plug in?
@6SRC_YT
@6SRC_YT 3 года назад
On the "Gear Out" you'll connect the front gear retract and the mains retracts (use a Y cable if necessary.

Eric, I'm a bit confused with the position of the nose wheel when checking orientation of it when gyro is activated. When the nose of the plane is turned to the right does the nose wheel turn to the left and vice versa? My gyro when activated turns the nose wheel in the direction of the turn and when I run it on the road during testing the plane wanders instead of going straight. I'm pretty sure I have everything plugged in according to the video. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

@@6SRC_YT "It will steer in direction it's facing when it's activated. You really can't lower gear on sidelines and taxi out say perpendicular to your takeoff line" Is this really true? If so I must carry my Avanti to the starting position with gear up and then lower the gear and place is in start position. Next walk to the pilot area and take off. I really thougt it was a "head and hold" funktion.
@leifpernstig3200
@leifpernstig3200 4 года назад
@@6SRC_YT I think it would be possible to work around this by adding an extra switch combined with gear up/down in OpenTx logical switch(es). This way one could taxi to takeoff position first and then initiate gyro from Tx.

I have one in my Avanti too...works great! I installed one in my F-86..it initialized properly, the rudder and nose gear work correctly, and it disables when the gear retracts. The problem is that the correction is moving in the wrong direction. If the nose moves to the left, the gyro corrects to the left....it should correct to the right. Anyone else have this issue? Thx.

Hi Raymond, did you ever fix this? I had the same problem and couldn't fix it so I ended up removing the Assan and it now lives in a drawer. Id like to use it. Any tips ? Thanks E
@raymondyuhasz47
@raymondyuhasz47 Год назад
@@eoinj3929 Hi Eoin, I did eventually fix it. It required two or three calibration attempts, but I did get it to work. You have to have the gear down, rapidly move the rudder stick at least 10 or 12 times left to right, but then stop all the way to the left and hold. It should reinitialize and then work correctly. You may have to do it a few times for it to take. I think I had to do it 3 times.
