I started learning how to fly back in 2006-2007 and I kept crashing which were expensive lessons, and ultimately led to my ex-wife and I having a lot of static that had never existed before. Now, like you, I fly only planes with a gyro even with the skill. I think at the intermediate to advanced skill level there is a need for confirmation of skill driven by an urge to prove oneself. When you get older, it's not so important.
And aside from safety, it also makes models look a lot larger and more realistic than they otherwise would. For those caring about their models looking as much as possible like the real thing, a gyro is really a must. Nothing ruins the scale impression like a beautiful model with tons of nice scale details being tossed around like a leaf. And no pilot in the world can remedy that.
Couldn’t have said it better myself, I learned to fly without a gyro or before they were even available, but I love them now, the power steering comparison was spot on, James I love your straight forward logical approach 👍👊✌️
Well said James!!! Gyro changed my life, it’s way more beautiful when it’s windy, trajectory is straight and level and not bumpy, it’s not cheating at all just more scale and realistic !
I concur, I also believe in the use of a gyro. If you don't have it you can't use it, but it is there if you need it. If I am flying something and I am trying to get comfortable with it then I am going to use it until my confidence tells me otherwise. Some guys make it seem like if anyone finds out they have used stabilization they will lose their man card 😀😀😀
Brilliant intro lol Great video from start to end. Have in fact been planning to do a video on gyros (as well as one on CG) myself - where I will most likely go into a little more detail as well. But love that you did this level headed, feel good version - the community needs that.
Thanks for the run through. As a newbie I am thankful for a little bit of help from getting in trouble as I progress in my flying skills. Whether a $200 or $500 and higher plane, that's a lot of money to lose when a gyro could have helped you save the plane. Thanks again.
If a gyro is cheating how come almost every Aircraft in the military inventory uses them? Anything that helps control and smooth flight is a help, not a cheat . If a person decides they are better off with out one that is there personal choice.
Auto level doesn't only have to be used as a trainer feature for beginners either. We all have those moments where we get disorientated. The auto level can be used as an "oh shit" switch as well. So therefore gyros are a great safety feature. My favourite gyro is the hobby eagle A3 Super 3 and it saves me money on expensive receivers because I can control everything through the gyro using the S.bus feature. It's great. And for flying scale in wind it really helps improve the scale look. A full size wouldn't get bounced around in wind unless it was so windy that no sensible pilot wouldn't fly in it. Tornado in the back ground for example lol
I'm a beginner at RC flight, but a real pilot that fly's real Cessna's. The same philosophy up there can be applied to RC flight, fly smarter..not harder. As far as I'm concerned, any gadget that helps avoid crashes and damage to your aircraft, use it.
I learned to fly with the Admiral RX600SP with Stability Plus gyro, I have learned for a year and now I only use gyro and sometimes when I lose orientation I activate the stabilizer. They taught us all to do mathematical operations mentally, and they all use a calculator, why not use technology to make life easier for us. WELCOME GYRO.
I fly using a Admiral 600 in Warbirds. Admiral 10ch w/Blue Eagle gyro. And I don’t feel cheated out of anything it’s me and my planes and MY way of flying right now. I like bringing MY planes and jets home. That’s MY story and IM sticking to it 😳 Can’t stand Pilots saying that.....
Been in and out of rc's for the last 40 years but all land-based. Always wanted to give flying a go, but didn't want to invest so much money only to crash it on it's maiden flight. With the advent of gyros, I'm finally edging closer to biting the bullet. I've got my eye on the Flightline P-51D 850mm since it's a bit simpler with no rudder (but can be added later), and the price is right.
I've been flying model aircraft now for 35 years and I've never used a gyro. But this year of 2021, I'm going to try one out just for the fun of it to see how it goes. I hope its not too complicated in setting up. All my receivers are Futaba 2.4, so hope I can buy a gyro that will go with Futaba.
I have a Hirobo Sceadu Evolution .50 shuttle. Is there a Gyro unit out there that will make my chopper self level? any information anyone can help me with I would so kindly appreciate it.. my receiver is a radio link AT9Spro.
My father as a commercial airline Captain and military pilot flew with gyros in his planes and never once complained that he wasn't flying by the seat of his pants. His comment was they just kept his butt in line with where he wanted to go!. Flew private and military warbirds also on the side and would always use a gyro if one was available. If good enough for my professional pilot dad then also good enough for me as a r.c. pilot!.
My local hobby shop has that exact fuselage cover for the huey in the background. Still in its original box with original price tag. Been there so long the plastic box turned yellow lol
It’s great when you turn up at the field and everyone is standing or sitting down there waiting for the wind to drop and I walk straight out flick gyro on and up it goes gyro off fly around gyro on and land 😀
Every plane with a Spektrum (AS3X type) receiver pre-installed has the basic gyro built into it, and if you bind Safe-select mode you have control limits for beginners. I don't hear any clamor about that! With a gyro you can buy a low $ receiver and have the same trainer mode and AS3X style stabilization. I get my gyros on ebay for 10 to 15 bucks and I don't have to pony up the $$$ for Spektrum receivers.
I’ve never had any luck with the admiral, but have the hobby eagle and I’ve been too scared to fly with it since I’ve had the admiral destroy 3 of my planes
Love the Gyro explanation 👍 it is a perfect illustration, 100% agree 👍 thanks James. More about why we need RC Gyros can be found here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oHI4mno7lNQ.html
All ten of my EDF’s have Spektrum AR636 receivers that I reprogrammed with AS3X and SAFE modes. They allow me to fly in gusty winds or poor visibility when other pilots are grounded..
We have a few dinosaurs in our club that moan all the time about new pilots using gyros and most of them have beaten up old planes that have been repaired over and over again, a gyro doesn’t take of or land fly circuits it’s just there to smooth out the flute when needed
James !!! We need a update video on the Gen2 Lemon 7chan gyro. I don’t think it has auto level on it. I might have to return it and wait till the Admiral 600 is back in stock.
In my opinion, it is a device that provides a comfort of flight if not the guarantee of not crashing too quickly his model ...cheating ? no, I don't think so...
I just mounted the A3 Super 3 in my F-4 Phantom. I have it in along the sidewall with the receiver on the opposite sidewall. Just tell the Gyro it's in the upright position
I have the A3pro V2. Do you have to run a Y wire for the ailerons? I would like to have both wing servos on their own wire. Because I would like to add Flaperons & still have a Gyro. Can I do this with a Gyro? The plane I want to do this on is a Hobbyking Crusader (Ugly Stick).
Radios have nothing to do with gyros. A gyro sits in the middle of your receiver and your servos. Your receiver wires that normally connect to your servos connect to the gyro, and then the wires from the gyro now go to the servo. Make sense?
One think I’m struggling to get my head round. In normal mode if I adjust throttle, down for example, will the plane descend or will the gyro try to maintain it’s current attitude/height!
gyro is off most often .... i dont trust it.... i use it only for recovery level to be able to prevent a crash in harsh situations...from 7 planes only one has a gyro..but maybe will put in one i a scoende plane soon...esp the expensive models...
I have been searching for an answer and I am hoping someone out there can help me. I have a beautiful older nitro shuttle helicopter. Can I put this Gyro wanted to self level it? It has a tail Gyro on it now but wanted to make it self level. It does have a fly bar. Can someone tell me if they make a Gyro? I can put on this helicopter so it will have soft level? Any information I can get? I would so kindly appreciate it. Thank you so very much.
It will help, but also a lot of shakiness comes to the type of camera and how that camera is mounted. The plane could be flying smooth but the camera could be loose with velcro and wobbling, or the camera doesn't have any internal anti-shake like a go pro. A gyro will 100% make wind less of factor when set up correctly, but there are many factors that go into to properly mounting a camera on an rc plane.
Hi this is Carter from Grayson Georgia to my question is having a gyro in your plane the same as asx3 that Spectrum sales with all their new receivers and can you please tell me what is the difference
Most gyros only smooth out the bumps in rough air (like AS3X). Some gyros also have heading hold which keeps your plane in the attitude it was in when you centered the sticks (most Spektrum AS3X receivers have it). And some gyros have bank/pitch limiting and self-leveling (like Spektrum's AS3X/SAFE receivers).
Currently the A3Pro from Hobby Eagle is out of stock, but at MotionRC.com we sell the A3-L and A3 Super 3 with the latter offering the same functionality but being easier set up as you can use a computer or programming card rather then the light patterns to set up.
It's like flipping a switch on to get your drunk self to walk straight....down a boulevard.....in front of the popo. Who wouldn't need that!! AirHammer out!!
Back in the 70's even R/C helicopters fly fine without any gyro. it doesn't fly well but it flies. Now we're putting gyros in model planes. Was at the flying field last weekend and one guy has a Radian Pro with a flight board that can auto return to home and auto land for him. What's the point of flying an R/C then? Come on people.
