fyi...stepper motors generate an electrical charge when you move the gantry...the faster you move the gantry the higher the voltage they generate... i suggest only moving the gantry when necessary and move it slowly. you can damage the control board back feeding voltage to it from the stepper motors.

High fives, my man!! You have a real gift of knowing your audience (or it seems that way). I thought, as I watched this, that even if I were to load up my XTool and air assist (which I don't have yet) and drove to your place to get help, I'd probably have the identical experience that I just had. Personally, I really like how you trimmed that tape...and I love how you use those "redneck hose clamps" to clean up the operational characteristics of your environment. For ME, your channel has now become my "go to" place to learn as much as possible about my "someday" XTool D1. Oh, BTW, I'm a woodworker, too...began my teaching career as a junior high Industrial Arts teacher, then was a middle school principal, and finished up with 17 years as faculty at MS State. Now, retired and woodworking out of the garage shop. Just need to scoot some things around so I can do engraving, especially on my high-end lazy susans and a few other projects. I ordered the bare bones laser, the RA2 rotary, a honeycomb and a set of legs on April 17th. My laser showed up in a couple weeks. I got the rotary 2 weeks ago, the honeycomb 3 days ago and I'm still waiting on the legs extensions. The products are top notch but their shipping schedule sucks. I already had a nozzle from another laser and I found an o-ring that took up the slack between the lens and the nozzle. Much better than the tape you're using. I think you're going to be happy with the air assist. It keeps everything nice and clean. I'm cutting 6mm MDF at 400mm/s 100% power and 5 passes and the kerf is so narrow I have to push the pieces out. It's a nice clean edge, too.

I put a drag chain on mine, so i just routed the hose thru it. I mainly got it to help with cutting, and etching more sensitive woods like bamboo.

The problem I see with the tape is, everytime you take the nozzle off to clean the lens the tape will tend to slowly unstick and start to come off.If XTool would have done their homework right the nozzle should fit on tight without any tape.They sure did cut corners on this one...Great and long video!

The biggest advantage with the air assist on engraving is it helps keep the soot off the lens. Soot buildup on the lens is the main cause of cracking, it absorbs some of the laser energy and over heats it.

Atomstack makes an air assist that looks like it will work with the xTool, for much less $$. Their honeycomb bed is cheaper as well.

My understanding was that the first D1's had one of two different sizes of laser mounting diameters. You probably have the smaller size if yours's is an older one. It seems that they only send the one size at this time. I just got mine and the size is correct.

Thank you for the video, I bought the air assist awhile back but have not installed it yet. I've only been engraving and I was under the impression it did not help much on engraving?

I just got my D1 20 watt. I also have air assist. It looks like the light shield is too small. Tube clamp, looks redundint. There is already a hole for the hose, at the top of laser. I think the nozzle looks different. New nozzle hole is smaller. I appreciate any insight you might be able to give me.

Can anyone tell me on this channel what to clean the wheels with and the guide rails because I've tried isopropyl alcohol and it just doesn't touch it at all

I wonder if a couple of O rings will work of the size of the diameter , then to slide the lens cover over?

Appears to be a poorly engineered fix on the part of xtool. I understand you do not have to do this on the new 20 watt. I wonder if you have to do this fix on the new pro 1 10 watt.

Slow your cut slightly and you may find that you only need 2 passes.

Total BS they did not engineer this better!
