Hey CA B, great question mate, because we are using it as a surfactant- any shampoo could be used, baby shampoo is recommended because its is relatively clear, neutral pH, and doesn’t negatively impact the adhesives in the film like a detergent may. Best of luck🤙 Kent
This is a great video with lots of useful information. It's great to have an Australian voice too ! Very friendly and comforting ! Thank you for taking time with all the tips.
Thank you soo much for this fantastic video I'm a single mum, trying to insulate my window getting ready for colder months in the uk and watching your video has given me confidence to do it myself!! Thank you again!!
I live in Southern California the summers are brutal 🥵so I’m tinting this spring , Thank you so much I really appreciate how you used the suggestions ! 👍🏽🤓
Hey Kent, I just looked up how to install window tint and found your videos. Now subscribed as well, as I need more diy inspiration. Good work mate... Love the tips on this video... Saw your first vid initially, this is more helpful.
When I installed mine a few years ago, I didn’t even realize that there was a removable film so I ended up putting it on with the tint side facing the window and the removable film facing towards the inside of the room. It still stayed on there and sealed properly, and when I wanted to remove it, it came off with no issues. I’m sure that it was not intended to be installed this way, but it seems like film still worked just fine. Just another idea on getting tinting that is easier to remove since you mentioned that in your video. Anyway, thanks for the great videos! I’m going to install some more soon so I wanted to brush up on how to do it when I came across your videos. Great content!
Love how you explain things. Very easy to follow, good info and to the point. Feel like I have a good chance at getting this right now 😂 lets give it a go 😁
Thank you, Kent! Thank you for sharing your experience, your knowledge, your tips, and for leaving up the other video of your first install (and it's mistakes)! Really very helpful! Thank you!
I was ready to give up on installation. Couldn't wrap my mind around reaching underneath to remove the coating. The 'backwards' tip - GENIUS!!! Using that tip, the film went up easily. I am encouraged to take on a couple more windows. Thank you!!!
Tape to split is awesome! Also, if you roll up the tint inside out, separate just the too & spray the sticky side a bit & roll back up (tighter) the backing sticks to the outside film & just pulls off. I don't know how to explain it well, but it's a game-changer!
Great video. Almost every other video talks about doing the reverse roll method which seems a bit daunting for a beginner. I like your method of sticking the film to another window and completely removing the liner before placing the film onto the target window. Seems a lot more forgiving. Don’t think I’ll attempt it without some help though! Cheers.
Hey Malcolm, thanks for the lovely comment mate, very kind. I have never done a window in two pieces and would love to know if it could be done.. the nice straight machined edges should sit nicely together, and the edges around all my installed window films are sitting nice and flat so.. go for it and let us know how you get on. 🤙Kent
Hi Kent. Thanks for the shout out! So glad it actually works - I must have seen it somewhere (obviously!)...would you believe I still haven't tried to do it myself, it's on 'the list'
Great video! Have a question... A local store has the roll sizes of 17.5 x 78.7 or 23.6 x 78.7. If My window is 45 inch tall 58 inch wide, which size roll of window film should I get? Thank you!
Hey Aussie, it was 15-30% VLT from memory, high number lets more light in (25% is very common) There is a link to the product I used here.. www.polyfilm.com.au/home-and-office-window-tinting And I prefer the silver colour, I feel the blue looks dated/discoloured Cheers. Kent
Do you spray the windows with the shampoo and water to stick it down? Sorry if it sounds dumb just keeping myself right and wondering if it leaves streaky marks. Great video. Thanks in advance.
Hey Patricia, the shampoo/water mix is mainly there to help with repositioning and then removing bubbles with a squeegee. I’ve never attempted window tinting without it - but have found if I don’t spray enough then the film sticks straight away and is not forgiving at all. Best of luck, Kent
Hey Vanessa, I’m guessing you are in Oz used off your question (Bunnings) If so try these guys, this is what I used in this video www.polyfilm.com.au/home-and-office-window-tinting its mirror tint, minimal light lost, and good privacy and UV protection for carpets etc… or elsewhere in the world this is the same product amzn.to/3m7OJ1O best of luck, Kent
Top video Kent, just wondering if you have any trouble with birds flying into the windows? I’ve been looking at ultraviolet window decals that are supposed to prevent window collisions, but I’m not sure if they work behind the mirror film, or if they only work behind the regular tint..
Hey Tamara, I only know from my limited experience, prior to tinting we had one collision, and since the mirror tint went on we’ve had one in a couple of years.. so, not sure if that means anything 💁🏻♂️ good luck mate, Kent
Hey Judy, I went with Polyfilm brand in Ausy (no affiliation) www.polyfilm.com.au/home-and-office-window-tinting Or if you prefer buying from Amazon here is a link to similar products; Reflective window film for daytime privacy amzn.to/3m7OJ1O Best of luck👍 Kent
Hey Tina, yeah this particular film I used is a permanent one, if you want to check out a temporary / removable type, have a look at his vid.. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sUwbOa0K9vA.html Cheers, Kent
Any thoughts on rolling the tint onto a cardboard tube (maybe a little more narrow than the window) and unrolling the film as I spray the window and separate the tint backing?
Hey Kate, 15-30% VLT from memory - reducing glare but still allows light. there is a link to the product I used here.. www.polyfilm.com.au/home-and-office-window-tinting The higher VLT percentage = more light transmission . Best of luck, Kent
Hey Michael, I’m not sure about that as I haven’t had to do it. You are probably right though as a little heat can relax polyester (PET) products. Best of luck mate. Kent
Hey Hoagnes, great question.. I don’t know enough about window film and its heat transfer to answer, my guess would be minimal extra as it’s only a thin layer of polyethylene. A noticeable difference locking heat from the sun though 👌 let us know what you find out. Cheers, Kent
Staring at the sliding doors I need to do... any tips for the larger 'glass' please? Need to get the inside house temp much lower than 39 deg this year!
Hey Kenneth, I scored this beauty from the hardware store.. I was tired of cheap ones that stopped spraying or working properly and leaking just to be thrown away and needing replacement. A few extra bucks and it’s still going 👌 cheers, Kent
Hey kinggabriel, definitely have the card between the blade and the gasket (rubber seal) I learnt the hard way and cut too many slices off my rubbers😬. All the best mate. Kent
Hey mate, that's a great question, stay tuned to this channel as I have a video coming up with a measured temperature difference showing before and after. ru-vid.com/show-UCYgHdCyiwS9Oy6Lp2r74POQ thanks, Kent
Hey SkidRenz, I would buy a non-adhesive or static cling type of film, they look just the same when installed but can peel off really easily when you don't want it anymore. see this vid ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sUwbOa0K9vA.html cheers, Kent
I'm soooooo confused, in my paper instructions nowhere (or in your video) does it say anything about soapy water , paper instructions don't say anything about scraping windows...only says spray with water and apply to window, peel film...im frustrated...even your instructions don't explain it well
Hey mate, yeah you can but bear in mind that the adhesive on the permanent films can interact with the plastic and become bubbled, and actually create a permanent bond, leaving you unable to remove the film in the future.. maybe look at other options like static cling film. Here’s a link 😉 amzn.to/3UFoYpT cheers, Kent
Can this be applied from outside as well or will it have the opposite affect if applied from outside? The reason I ask is that I have mosquito/fly net installed on the inside of the window.
Hey hilmoonr, yeah you can, because I’m a bit clumsy I got one without any sharp edges or metal trim. It’s actually more firm than the typical window ones which I’ve found helps with application too. Best of luck mate.
Hey Casey, measure the space between verticals timber window sills (this would be glass plus aluminium/timber window frame), hope that makes sense. Kent
Can another type of soap be used instead of baby shampoo. I don't want to have to buy it and never use it again (I have no babies). I have tons of other shampoos, though.
Hey again, it's neither actually Vanessa, it's the '15% VLT Silver Mirror Reflective Glass Window Film' from 'Polyfilm' www.polyfilm.com.au/home-and-office-window-tinting its handy that you get to see how it looks after install hey (videoclip @ 7:30) Kent
Hey Karen, make sure you always have a sharp blade, and when trimming film to window size after install, don’t start your cut at the edge, rather work from the centre 👍 best of luck, Kent
I really struggled with the edges of the glass. Even though there wasn’t any parts pushing against the edges. Somehow the water just wouldn’t leave the edges.
The sticking to another window to remove the film didn't work for me. I had to tape to a wall, remove a little, tape up the backing with strong tape and then pull it off. 😢
why not put film on the outside? does it make a difference. my skylights need film and to put film on the inside would be much more difficult. Great video I am new subscriber
I install the film , the part I don’t understand is why at night you can’t see the outside from inside is supposed to block the view from the outside , the daytime is fine , it blocks the view from the outside to inside , and I install the film just like the video, anybody can help me with this issues ?
Hey mate, unfortunately there is no film on the market that you can see out of during the day but blocks the view into the house when it’s dark out and lights are on. Kent
Hey Mike, if that’s a problem you’ve come across that’s a great tip! I haven’t had any misfortune with that.. but there’s a first for everything I guess 🤔 Cheers mate, Kent
@@Eddie-ud4bb I believe this person meant that you shouldn't install the film while the sun is shining directly on the window. Try to do it early in the day or when it's cloudy so the glass won't be hot from the sun. I'm about to embark on this project myself on 10 panes of glass with a southern exposure, and my plan is to get an early start and do as many as I can before it gets too hot. This project may take a few days to complete... :)
