Will the Mopar T/A Cold Air Intake fit on a 2019 and up Scat Pack with the old Hellcat style hood that has the heat extractors? I've had mixed answers but seen pictures of a couple floating around online showing it could be done, but no videos. So I decided to pull the trigger and buy the kit to find out for myself. I've had the kit since before my 1320 was even built, and finally got the time to get it installed.
Quick warning, this install did NOT go smooth lol. Which in turn made editing this video not that smooth either! If you're only interested in certain parts of the video, here's some times for you to jump around, just make sure to watch the end where I find out how cold the cold air is.

Great video! I enjoyed your logical thinking regarding the hood duct. I’ll have to go with just the Hellcat lower box and tube. Thanks for your research. I’m sorry you spent the money ! Hopefully your channel grows and you can more than recoup the cost. Thanks again and good luck. I’m a new sub!

Thank you! The hellcat lower box and tube is definitely the way to go. It's not the first time I overspent on something, and it won't be the last, but at least the front scoop takes in air now. It makes my younger self who has always wanted a fully functional hood scoop feel better. Thank you for the support and well wishes! If I can start recouping some of the cost through this channel it'll definitely make it easier trying to justify everything I do to the wife! lol

I got the T/A intake kit back in late 2017 when they first come out and could buy one. Installed it on my 2015 Challenger SRT392. The SRT hoods should have come truly functional from the factory. And I feel the 2017 T/A and after, should have come with a true functional T/A hood like back in 1970. Great job, it can be a pain getting that headlight intake tube in there. I opened the passenger side inside headlight also and put a rubber 45 degree tube in there to vent off heat and also let in cooler air.

That headlight tube was a pain, then after I got it in I learned there's a shorter version thats made to fit the 19s and up better.. I agree they should have made all the SRT hoods functional with it. Thanks for watching!

I did a custom mod on the SRT Helcat upper. Required machining out of a larger pipe coupling and epoxy and a connecting male tube. Will do an epoxy of another fitting for the factory crankcase vent tube. Will be selling these to go onto the stock hellcat lower. Benefit over the glued plug is that no chance of ingesting a piece of plastic into the throttle area. Also the connection tube is about .25 inch smaller than the hellcat tube and .25 inch larger than the stock 392 female input tube. This prototype will be changed in measurement and will come urethane liner coated or coated with aluminum particle coating for heat rejection. Any interests let me know. I have been a hot rodder and fabricator for over 40 years. My modded SRT top will be a big improvement over the restrictive 5.7 top on these 6.4s. That's the issue with the 392. Lack of intake flow with the 5.7 filter and box setup. Go full Hellcat with a Heat coated top. Will look into ceramic or metabolized coating for the full setup if I can get enough initial interest to strike a deal on the coating process. Catch can is a prototype also . Will be bead blasted and come with a CNC bracket or 3d Printed plastic bracket and vacuum tube hookup for real time autometer vac gauge. Like to see my gauge stand alone continually to train me for optimum driving habits due to 7 buck a gallon premium now. And right headlight intake plenum cooling tube with custom beaded bracket to come soon. 3 necessary mods for efficiency to get the most out of the 392. Let me know..Unable to load pics . Check out my F.B. for post of the mods.

I had the same problem with the headlight tube being too long when I installed the hellcat airbox. The correct inlet tube is 68322216AA which is for the 6.2, it fits perfectly. It seems the TA cold air kit is blocking off your compartment cooling air, and one of the extractors. So your engine compartment is getting even hotter, which heats up your intake system. I will stick with the Hellcat airbox and tube, with a K&N filter, this combo works great, and engine compartment stays cooler.
@Scavenger1320
@Scavenger1320 3 года назад
Yeah, one heat extractor is 98% blocked off, but older Scats and newer Hellcats don't have any heat extractors at all. I wrapped most of it with a heat barrier and that actually helped bring the temps down. I have a vid on that too. But yeah, for most people I would go with the lower box with headlight tube only route.

Did the same thing to my Scat and have noticed the dame issue so i'll be interested in what you do. I have an idea as well and it's probably the same thing. The weirdness is it did improve my throttle response but I tried the Hellcat lower box first anyway and that helped out the most there. The intake tube just improved it a little more. I am thinking of taking mine back off and just keeping the HC lower box with a HC filter. FYI, the reason you had to fight so much with the headlight tube is the 2019+ is shorter. This is to accommodate the light tubes they added inside the headlights. There is a shorter Mopar tube for this and it is made like the AFE one thicker plastic and smooth on the side. The funny thing is when they did this for the T/A's they could have resolved the entire problem by simply adding an engine cover over the intake. That would have prevented the heat and the intake would be more worth it. Lastly, playing with flow I don't think it really adds that much. Glad I got mine through a friend and didn't spend a mint for it.
@Scavenger1320
@Scavenger1320 3 года назад
thanks for all the info! You'd definitely think Mopar would have done something about the heat. Last night I was cruising steady at 70 for an hour in 50 degree weather and it did get down to 3 degrees above once in while, but mostly still hovered around 5 above. That doesn't help with drag racing though. I actually ordered that shorter Mopar tube the other day. I should have it in a couple days and will then take everything apart, and add my heat barrier. I'm aiming to have it all done and video up by next weekend. Unfortunately it doesn't look like I'll get another 80 degree day soon to make an even comparison but it should be close enough

wow, that install looked like a huge pain in the butt. Doesn't look like it is worth the money and the pain to do this over just the Hellcat airbox and tube (which I did in my install on my 1320, video posted) The only plus the Mopar TA set up may offer is the conical filter should flow more air than a drop in panel K&N filter, which I have. But probably not much to justify the expense and labor. I'd say the $150 for the hellcat airbox and tube seems like quite a bargain. Thanks for the great video and review. Steve
@Scavenger1320
@Scavenger1320 3 года назад
Yeah, I agree, based on what I'm seeing with mine and the cost, I would tell anyone else to just stick with the Hellcat box and tube, this kit isn't worth it and is actually worse when IATs are concerned. BUT, I'm stubborn, lol, and I can't get myself past having a truly functional front hood scoop. So next week I'm going to take it all apart again and add in a customization that I hope will solve the high IATs. I just watched that video of yours again, I'm jealous how much easier you got your lower box in, but you have a different tube than me too. I actually just ordered that one so I'll see the difference between it and the 2 that I have.

I just bought the same car a month ago, a 2020, 1320, hellraisin. Had 7800 miles on it. I need to learn the modes at this point. Your shifts seem snappier under heavy throttle. My car is basically stock. It was a trade at a Mercedes dealer. Believe it or not, the car is my daily driver.
@Scavenger1320
@Scavenger1320 2 года назад
Nice, then we make up 2 of the 41 hellraisins that year! All I do is put it in Drag mode, which is setup with "Drag" on all the settings. And I believe it, but even more unbelievable, by some people at least, mine is my daily driver too! I just don't drive a lot since I work from home mostly, but it still gets on the road when I do drive somewhere.

@@Scavenger1320 My commute is 21 miles each way. I was using my wife's Subaru Ascent before this. It's not a bad car, but it's boring and has some quirks with the CVT and how the throttle management works. I haven't smiled like I had in a long time when I test drove the Scat. Reminds me of a Camaro, I had, a 1983 with a 400 SBC. The Challenger is a heavier car though, more power too, but the vibe is there. It's been a long time.

There's really no reason for me to put it back on, plus I'd have to modify it to fit around the hood duct of this cai.

@Scavenger1320
@Scavenger1320 2 года назад
I believe there is some improvement, especially on the back half of a 1/4 mile, but I don't have any solid proof or tests on it yet. My car has always seemed to pull a little bit harder at the top end when I've had another Scat in the next lane. Some of that is obviously due to the weight difference though too. I'm hoping to find out for sure in January. If I get a good cool weekend with negative DA I'm going to head down to Houston to reset my personal best and I'll be taking the original stock intake with me. My goal is to break a 10.99 with a 100% stock motor/trans/tune. So first I'll see what I can do with my car as-is with the T/A cai, then afterward I'll swap the stock intake back on and try again.

I’m waiting on my 21 TA 392 scatpack wide body to get built from the factory and it’s unbearable the wait!!! But my question is does this cai add more hp and tq to the stock 485hp and 475tq? I’m figuring with that enclosure and two air intakes feeding the air into the cai there has to be some gains. Idk why dodge didn’t put it in a dyno and give us the gains. Does anyone know the gains if any it gets??
@Scavenger1320
@Scavenger1320 2 года назад
The waiting does suck doesn't it, but it'll all be worth it once you have those keys in your hands! Whether these gain any performance is unfortunately hotly debated and no one really has any good real numbers. A lot of people say CAIs do nothing. I think it does make a difference, even if it's only a little. At least your car will already come with this intake so you're not shelling out over 600 bucks for it. It would have been nice if Dodge did some testing, but I guess they didn't want to confuse people if they started offering 3 different scat pack options with different power numbers. I'm including the Shaker scats since they have a different CAI too that draws air in from on top of the hood. Problem with a lot of peoples dyno numbers is they do them on different days, which throws in all sorts of other variables. Plus a dyno is stationary so it's not getting the full effect of the car going down a track or road. I do want to do my own testing though. If I ever get a good TnT day or private rental at the track I'm going to try and swap intakes in between runs to see what data I can gather.

@@Scavenger1320 hey thanks for the quick reply. That’ll be the best day of my life when those keys are in my hand 😂. I’m guessing since mopar engineered it for the TA scatpack they must of run tests. My best guess would be like anywhere from 6-15hp to crank. Especially since the hot air from the engine is blocked from the cai and there is two air intakes going to the cai. But who knows. Also did the cai make the exhaust louder or deeper?
@Scavenger1320
@Scavenger1320 2 года назад
@@JL-rx7ou I honestly couldn't tell any difference in sound. One thing to note though is I found that the intake duct that draws air from the hood scoop sits directly over the engine and the plastic gets HOT, almost too hot to even touch. Since the duct opening is flat, narrow and kind of spread out, it actually heats up the air as its passing through. I ended up getting an adhesive heat barrier wrap from Thermo-tec and that helps insulate the duct from the engine heat. I put out a separate vid on that too.

@Scavenger1320

I ended up wrapping it in some thermo-tec adhesive heat wrap. Worked pretty good. I actually still need to apply a little more but I made a vid on that too. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hj4S3I7amEc.html

Are you considering converting it to a shaker? because shaker's CAI take cold air through a totally different path
@Scavenger1320
@Scavenger1320 3 года назад
Honestly no, although I do really like the Shaker hood. They both draw air from the top of the hood and dump it into the air-box. Personally, I think this one is a little more direct, but whatever difference there would be between the 2 would most likely be negligible. Plus the cost of a new hood, painting it, and the shaker kit itself would be way too high for what would probably be no difference in performance. I also like the fact that there aren't many truly functional hellcat hoods out there, so it kind of becomes a talking point.

I was changing my air filter on my '17 Charger SRT and I broke one of the tabs on the OEM filter box cover. I could use yours...do you still have it? Sell it to me bro...or better yet, give it to me. Ill pay for shipping to SoCal...thanks.

I know you already installed the CAI. But I was told it wouldn't make a difference in H P or gas mileage. Would like to know if there is a difference.
@Scavenger1320
@Scavenger1320 3 года назад
I can't make any claims about how much they help, but I do know that the reason the Hellcats got 10 more HP in 2019 is because of the new dual snorkel hood that fed it more air than what they previously got through just the lower box. So that tells me that CAI's are capable of adding some power. How much is another question. Unfortunately I don't have any good testing with this, BUT, I do plan on working out a deal with a local shop that has a dyno so that I can do some of my own testing. If that works out I hope to do some runs to compare stock vs. this CAI. I might also try some 1/4 mile track testing too if there's a test-n-tune that isn't too busy.

I haven't noticed any down shift issues like you're describing but I'll keep an ear on it. With no trunk trim and the rear seat pulled out most of the time I hear just about everything going on back there. Thanks for watching!

i have chips on mine, i think its from vibration cause that insert is not secured tight
@Scavenger1320
@Scavenger1320 3 года назад
might be. at least its hidden behind the insert so you can't see it. and since it's aluminum i'm not worried about rust. still sucks its there though. sounds like it might be a common issue if you found chips on yours too.

@Scavenger1320 2 года назад
If you mean changing to this T/A intake then no, unless you just want a truly functional front hood scoop. For the price there's other options that protect against engine bay heat better.

Probably. I actually already bought one. I've had a 180 on my last few Rams, and being in Texas there aren't many days it would cause an issue. I know with my 02 I got a light a few times on really cold days.

Great video, I had high hopes for that hood snorkel! I'm working on a custom CAI for my Charger. The plan is to use the Hellcat lower box , this same Challenger TA upper box. Started dry fitting and having problems already, the TA upper doesnt seem to fit perfect on my hellcat lower (its slightly off how the upper kind of drops down into the groove of the lower). ...... Does your TA upper fit nicely into the lower box groove all the way around? Thank You!
@Scavenger1320
@Scavenger1320 3 года назад
Mine does fit together perfectly, but it was also all part of the same kit. I'm only guessing that the lower is the exact same as what comes in Hellcat Challengers since it looks the same compared to one's I've seen in videos where people only bought the hellcat lower. Good luck with your project though, sounds like it'll be awesome if you get it to fit together

Awesome video! I have a 1320 and want to install a mopar cai, my concern is the heat extractor is right over the exposed filter. Wouldn't that cause issues in the rain?
@Scavenger1320
@Scavenger1320 3 года назад
No, not at all. The duct is solid and fits over the lower box and filter, making it sealed. Any rain will just run over the top of that duct like it would the top of the stock box.
