6PC QUICK-SPLICE WIRE TAP CONNECTORS
GlowShift 6pc Quick-Splice Wire Tap Connectors are a quick, easy and effective solution for tapping power from your car or truck’s wiring to power for 12-volt accessories including GlowShift Gauges. Use the connectors to tap into switched and constant 12v power sources, or the headlight switch source to dim your gauges when the headlights are on. This set includes a total of 6 quick-splice wire tap connectors in 2 different sizes. The 3 Blue Tap Connectors are compatible with 14-18 gauge wire sizes and the 3 Red Tap Connectors are compatible with 18-22 gauge wire sizes.
HOW TO USE THE CONNECTORS
Simply place the vehicle wire you want to tap power from into the splice connector and crimp down until you hear a click, confirming it is successfully spliced and closed. Next, place the wire that you would like to connect to your vehicle’s wire into the quick-connect and crimp. Finally, insert the quick-connect into the splice connector and you have your tapped connection!

Known as Scotch locks in the UK. Personally would never fit one on my car, most auto electrians in the UK would never use them. If you must use them put some petroleum jelly into it to help prevent moisture getting into the wires.

But i agree w lazy j, scotch locks are crap. Especially w really thin wire. Better off removing about inch to inch and a half of the jacket on the existing wire, separate the strands so theres a space between half of them, thread your new wire through the space, move half the strands of the new wire to the left half the strands to the right then twist the new wire around the existing wire. Solder the connection, liquid electrical to make it waterproof then wrap electrical tape around it.

if you have a 12 gauge wire, can you tap it, then mix match a smaller gauge wire like a 22 gauge connector..? or can you only tap a wire and plug in the same gauge..? Thanks for a clear video.
@GlowShift
@GlowShift 4 года назад
It does not have to be the exact same gauge wire. If you are using a different gauge wire, it is recommended that the wire you are attaching should be smaller than the wire you are tapping into. Just make sure the size gap isn't too large. For example don't tap a 22 gauge wire into a 4 gauge wire.

Got a question about wiring up a aftermarket stereo. I have everything plugged in but I need a 12v ignition source to power the head unit. Would I be able to source that power supply from the wiring harness by splicing the red ignition wire or would I have to get it from somewhere else ie an accessory or fuse?

I like the simplicity but I’m having problems after a year, glitches in the connections on my aftermarket car alarm. I’m going to replace these T-connectors and do something else to ensure better functionality. Are there any other connectors of this type that is better? I saw someone using Posi taps, kind of the same principle but are they any better in the long run?

Best will always be a proper soldered splice, be that manual or the premade heat gun splices. Also, heat shrink helps a lot with keeping the elements out and also adds a bit of strength to any splice

I hate scotch locks. Especially for really thin gauge wire. Both times ive used them for installing back up cameras they made terrible connections no matter how little or how much i squeezed the metal into the wire. May work ok for thicker guage but terrible for thinner guage. Just not enough contact/surface area for a stable connection. Also its not waterproof. Better off removing the jacket around the middle of the existing wire, about an inch to inch and a half of the jacket/insulator. separate the strands so you can thread the new wire through it, separate the strands of the new wire half to the left half to the right then twist it around the existing wire. Solder the connection. Dielectric grease the bare wire or liquid electrical tape to make it waterproof, then wrap electrical tape around it.

This style of connector offers no protection from dirt or moisture so it's basically like inviting corrosion. Moreover, the the tiny amount of surface area contact between the IDC and the wire means extra resistance in the junction which could lead to overheating in high-current applications. These might be the worst kind of connector to put under the hood of a car. They are the lazy man's connector. Use a proper splice technique or run a new wire to the fuse box.
