Today I’m 17 but when I was 15, me and my dad went to a farmer boys restaurant to instal all that single ply. I don’t know much but I assure you all that, that’s the most delicate and detailed job I ever faced. Good thing my dads a 25+ year experienced roofer and has done almost 50 single ply projects.

Okay, on the lapping comments, once they're welded, they become seamless. You can literally put the laps in reverse and they still wouldn't leak. Personally, the only thing I wouldn't have done was to tie the roof into the wall at the flashing point. I just see that flashing buckling over time and pulling apart, but I could be wrong. Maybe it worked. The physics however dictate a free tie in there where the roof can move independently from the wall and still be watertight. However, having said all that, I can appreciate the metal roof look on a more traditional structure. Well done gentlemen. While in my personal opinion, architectural shingles with ice & water shield underlayment would've done well there for a few decade needing practically no maintenance and it would've been pleasing aesthetically, the job looks really nice. Slate or tile or copper standing seam would've been the ultimate of course, but this roof probably came in at 1/3 the cost. Again, looks great. Good stuff.

I’ve spent spent 25 years surveying & repairing buildings. Single membrane, mmmmmm leaks, leaks, & more leaks. All these jobs I refer to, were commercial & carried out by approved contractors. In the video, I’ll wager water penetrates the upstand to the stone wall in around 8 years or so depending if it’s west facing. Building materials move differently, especially mortar along that length. Also, come the day day when you fall of a roof........well, put it to the test; jump of a roof in a very controlled way & see if your body hurts.... It hurts. I know from falls & bitter experience from days, long gone.

Running the seams the way they did is fine .Water is not hitting the lap edge which could be an issue. Hot air weld is very good if done properly. All in all a good job. Wonder if they scaffold bottem edge to prevent falling all the way to ground

I disagree with how you laid out the membrane. You should always lay out membranes from lowest end of the roof to the highest, while over lapping the membrane. You started out fine, but you continued only in one direction. At 3:54 in the video, the membrane you laid out should be the last. You should have worked from the opposite end on the left side of the screen up to the center (the highest point) from that point on.

Wayne Lee I wouldn't have installed the roof with a buck water lap either but when the manufacturer allows for buck water laps it happens ,in fact on tear offs the PVC Trocal didn't care if 100% of field seams were buck water as long as durring tear off all wind was blowing over the seam vs blowing into the lap ,on this buck water a good head of grey Vulkem over the lap EPDM style and all will be well.

En singleply application, the lapping of the membrane has no importance whatsoever, in fact, these membrane a often used for basin and water pool. The welding is done so the membrane just become thicker where it is welded, and laboratory testing show a rupture of the membrane itself by delamination of the membrane itself and not wetween the two welded layer of the membrane.

we use fatra and they make you clamp the field sheet under the metal drips and any abutment, also why didn't you start at the eve both sides then all laps would of been going in the right direction. ? you totally missed the bottom metal against the wall up-stand for necking in, no miter cuts on the standing seem and no end-caps at the bottom. not good but not bad for amateurs. keep it up and you will be able to play with the big boys in 3 or 4 years.

Rephonol is a good pvc membrane,but it's two expensive, been laying pvc for 34yrs and I know all the short cuts all these extras thats on a spec is a con You don't need them, I can get my materials down to £10 per mtr including fleece and fixings, it's allways the details that cost the money,polyroof is a good system, I done a couple of roofs about 20 yrs ago and still sound, but the weather is a problem ,it is temperature controled,just like the glues,the good thing about fibreglass,rubber (epdm) TPO,pvc you don't need to be experienced, not like the old school felt fixers

Ive fitted thousands of m2 of singleply over the past 15 years, and if 1 of my lads ever walked away thinking that was acceptable, they wouldnt do another job for me! Direction off lap falls doesnt matter, not important. But even tho its not required, get the sheet down before the edge trims, clamp the sheet down. Upstand is a mess...i wont allow a single ripple anywhere. But those standing seams!!! Why he hasnt measured out so they meet on the hip is beyond me and why hasnt he used a straight edge to work to, keeping them straight. I could drive a straighter line, pissed!

The membrane doesn't have a lap it has a welded seam and the orientation of the laps doesn't matter as they will accept water flow against them. The issue with posting video's like this is the lack of edge protection which is a legal requirement demonstrating the lack of care from the roofing contractor ! Professionals or amateurs ???

Bowing down to the state does not have anything to do with professional, or amuature. the finished job, customer service, cleanliness, during, and after the job, and pride are some of important aspects of a professional. Not your ability to take orders from someone who has never been in your situation, but thinks they know what is best for you. Like they care about your safety more than you. When did men stop being men, and become such jack boot lickers. Sickening. As for me, I will continue living free till my last breath, and will take orders, nor ask permission from no man. Have a nice evening.

@ThePete1891
@ThePete1891 8 лет назад
Fall protection? You are joking right? It is a flat roof, why would you ever need fall protection? Looked like a good job to me. Fall protection is up to the induvidual, and weather he feels safe with, or without it. when you use it, where it is not needed, it causes accidents, not to mention getting tangled in hoses, cords, and all other crap. Laws requiring fall protection, were put in by statists, who wanted more man hours for the big union shops. I have been roofing well over 25 years, steep slope residential, mostly, and have rarely worn fall protection, only when I thought it was needed, or when I was in a highly visable area, and risked getting a fine. I have NEVER fallen off a roof. For the past 8 years I have been in buisness for myself, and am not requierd by law to follow any of the nanny state bullshit.I can't beleive a roofer would say it was bad to have a video without ropes on, and that made roofers look bad. Of all the things roofers do. Have a nice day.
@Bobg425
@Bobg425 8 лет назад
Its not a choice its a legal obligation.My uncle Maurice worked as a roofer for 30yrs and fell off only once.Your attitude(only when I might be seen) is all thats bad with the industry,I dont really care about you being in a wheelchair or dead but the poor sods that work with you,your attitude to health and safety stinks and epitomises the smart assed attitude that caused so many men to be injured and killed falling from heights. Fall protection as a employer is your job,you leave yourself open to charges of corporate manslaughter(someone done in Sheffield 2 yrs ago,fined and imprisoned after a man working for him fell through a skylite). Thinking HS doesnt apply to you as you are so clever/good that you wont fall is beyond all stupidity and arrogance,no-one thinks theyll fall but most have the sense that they might so look after themselves. Have a nice day yourself,dont fall,your insurance wont pay out and if a employee falls youll be hopefully in prison,or have a bit of common and some HS.
@ThePete1891
@ThePete1891 8 лет назад
I am sorry, but it is not arrogance, it is me taking responsibility for my self, and making my own decision. I use my fall protection when I feel itt is neccesary. What happened to your uncle is terrible, but people have strokes when they get up to fast. Roofing is dangerous, and if you feel that you are safe, and connfident, who is a politician to tell you otherwise? Did your uncle fall off a flat roof?
@brocklanders1984
@brocklanders1984 6 лет назад
Probably the roofers trying to make a living where there is virtually zero regulation and pricing in scaffold on single-storey residential is pricing yourself out of the job! If everyone did it then fine but that’s not the case and not everyone has the luxury of clients with a budget to have works undertaken by the book. Ethics aside, that’s the reality for most residential/small-sized roofing businesses.

I believe this, these guy forgot the first rule of roofing, water runs downhill and you lap you seams, from top to bottom. meaning start at the gutter and work up the wall, also the nail a board on the wall and cut a tuck point in the stone then apply the metal then heat the roofing over it, then they they have stone dust on the roof and try to heat the roofing they made flashing into and then half to heat it, unreal, they should of put the wood on and heat the tape up the woood, then cut the stone and install the flashing last, just seem like they are truly not roofers with any type of common knowledge, sorry, I half to call them like I see them, I would give it a 5 on a 1 to 10 scale, good day
