It is time to get rid of the one tire fire! Taking on the challenge of swapping out the differential, and installing a new diff cover as well. This wasn't too hard of a job, it was pretty time consuming. (I also snapped a carrier bearing bolt inside the diff housing!) I also never messed with the pinion, and I kept the same gearing. That helped out a lot with the Prussian and backlash tests. Everything turned out great, and I'm really happy with the results. I hope you enjoy, and don't forget to subscribe! Thank you.

Since your White Bowtie is sky high, I'd sump the fuel out and drop the tank considering you'd need a crane to pull the bed off that truck. Mine is stock and I can use a cherry picker to pull mine, and the 6.5" bed has 8 bolts.

Hi...thanks for the video. I was just wondering why you didn't fill the diff fluid through the fill plug on the new diff cover? You decided to use the stock location to fill the diff. Thanks.
@TheKingCoopa
@TheKingCoopa Год назад
Hey, thats what the diff cover manufacturer instructions were, to use the factory fill hole. If you use the fill plug on the diff cover, it would take like 15 quarts of gear oil or something obnoxious like that, and would basicly fill the entire differential up.

@TheKingCoopa Год назад
Hey, the truck has been down for the last year. Getting a built 6.0/4l80e/AWD/nitrous. But from 2020 to 2022 I beat on it ALOT. Constantly redline shifting and digs with it. Tge tru trac handled it great. I also ended up switching to 4.10 gears which helped out alot with acceleration.
@BillaBong1
@BillaBong1 4 года назад
Hi me again. I got a question. Im thinking about regearing from the 3.73 to 4.56 or 4.88 on the rear with the truetrac. Do i have to also change the front differential gear too? Some say i dont have to and some say i have to. What do you think? Keep it stock or reagear? That is the question? Lol
@TheKingCoopa
@TheKingCoopa 4 года назад
Hey, id only regear, if you are planing to go to larger tires, or planing on doing alot of racing. Most race trucks run 4.10 gears. But if your staying relatively stock tires/lift then id keep the 3.73s. Those are gonna be great for around town, and for the highway. If you change to a 4.56 or 4.88 your highway mpg's are gonna suck. Your gonna be running at a higher rpm to stay the normal speed. But to answer your question. You can do it both ways. But if your gonna change the rear gears, you need to change the front gears. Yes, you can change the rear gears and drive it around like that, in 2 wheel drive. But you will never EVER beable to put it in 4x4. Having two different gear ratios, (4.56 in the rear, and factory 3.73 in the front) the first time you try to put that truck in 4x4, you are going to shread some gears, and mess some stuff up! Even if its for 10feet. So change the rear gears and forever keep it in 2wd, or change both sets, and you can go 4x4 whenever. If you change the fronts, they have to be the same ratio.
@BillaBong1
@BillaBong1 4 года назад
@@TheKingCoopa ohhhh. Ok. Heck yea thanks for the info. Man luckily you told me in advance. I was thinking when after i get the new gears and install it and go straight to test it with 4x4 offroading. But not now. Lol. Ill leave it stock then untill i plan on doing both at the same time. Thanks again. 👍👊
@TheKingCoopa
@TheKingCoopa 4 года назад
Haha for sure! Yea, with two different gear ratios, your front and back tires will be spinning at different speeds/revolutions. But you will be traveling the same distance. So that would cause a lot of binding in your drive train. you'll probly won't even be able to drive 5 feet until something broke. Snap your U joints, turn your driveshaft into a pretzel, or the most common is shredding your differential gears. It's always good just to do a little bit of extra research before you do a modification. So it's a good thing you asked lol

@TheKingCoopa
@TheKingCoopa 4 года назад

@BillaBong1
@BillaBong1 4 года назад
So im about to do the same exact thing you're doing. Do i also have to get the metric(m8x1.25x40) bolts for it too? Also what was the torque amount for the bearing cap bolts? Oh and the torque ring gear bolt? One more thing whats the recommended gear oil for the truetrac?
@TheKingCoopa
@TheKingCoopa 4 года назад
Hey, with the kit I bought, and linked in the description. They will send you SAE bolts, more than likely your rear end will be metric threaded. So the bolts they send you won't work. you wont be able to re-use your factory bolts, because the new diff cover is alot thicker, and you will need longer bolts. For the gear oil, A quality, petroleum-mineral based, GL5 rated 80w-90 gear oil should be used. They also state, to make sure their are no additives pre-mixed into it. The only place I could find that had that, was at napa. To tourqe for the Carrier Bearing Cap Bolts are 60 ft-lbs and the ring gear bolt tourqe is 65 ft-lbs. Pay attention to those, because they will most likely be reverse threaded

How much diff fluid did it take. I just put one like the one you installed but filled from top fill hole on diff. I used about 3 quarts and didn’t run out the top. I seen you filled yours still from factory.
@TheKingCoopa
@TheKingCoopa 4 года назад
Glad you brought that up, I forgot to put a note in for that. The factory 8.6" housing takes 2.15 quarts to fill up. With the new TA Performance diff cover, it now takes about 2.75 quarts. I called them, and you're not supposed to use the fill plug on the diff cover. The fill plug is too high and will fill up the axle tubes, before it overflows. Which would take like 8 or 9 quarts to reach that point. Thats what they told me. I don't know why they even designed it with the fill plug, if you're not supposed to use it. So I would either call the company that made your cover to get the right fluid capacity, or use the factory fill location. I think you're good though, 3 quarts is really close to my fluid capacity.
@saintnificent5532
@saintnificent5532 3 года назад
A lot of companies make THREE plug diff covers, Drain, Level, Fill...I've even seen them with dip sticks and sight glasses....I installed a Three plug G2. Also It's messy but use form a gasket silicon when putting the cover on the differential a fiber gasket will weep over time. Aaaand, the bracket that attaches at the top of the diff cover to hold the brake lines/cables might need a spacer and a little longer bolt if the bracket isn't like the bracket in this vid, GM did use a couple of different ones over this model's year.

Hey, I did not get new shims. Since I didn't not change or remove the pinion gear, also didn't change the ring gear. The only thing I changed was the Detroit trutrac. Sometimes with the gm axles, you can reuse the carrier bearing shims, and it will still put you right back to where it was. Hi new subscriber here. I im a new chevy truck owner. I have a 2003 chevy silverado 1500 5.3l 4x4, stock 10 bolt 8.6 3.73gear ratio 30 spline. and recently broke my spider gears. Now looking to purchase and install the truetrack soon in the comming future. Im making a list of whats needed for complete install. Will i need the exact carrier bearings you got for it or will my stock bearings will work? Do i need new shims also or will my stock shims work? Anything else needed? Also what is my axle diameter? I look into some website to puchase the truetrack trying to put my info in and it needed some other input like axle shaft diameter, length, ring gear diameter and bolt amounts, pinion nut size, and lug diameter. Im on fb and forums and no comments/help. Oh and for the time being i need to find replacemants spider gear from a donor vehicle from a junk yard and need compatible vehicle but cant seem to find any. I know a whole lot of vehicle have the same rear end diff but dont know what they are. Lol sorry for the long comments. Im stuck with all these question for about 2months now. Need help
@TheKingCoopa
@TheKingCoopa 4 года назад
Hey, thanks for the sub! Sounds like you have a good truck 👌 can't go wrong with a 5.3, and 3:73s mine do great on the highway. In the description of the video I have the parts linked that I used. You can just call that company, they will tell you exactly what you need (should still be the exact same parts I used) but your gonna want new carrier bearings. 1, because the miles might have started to wear them out. And 2, because the carrier bearings are pressed on, so its gonna be extremely difficult to pull those off without damaging them. Plus the extra couple bucks that they cost, it's going to give you some extra peace of mind that you won't have to mess with it for a long time. As long as you keep the same ring and pinion gears, you should beable to re-use your factory shims. Thats what i did and it came out perfect (doesn't always happen)make sure you don't flip them, or mix up the shims, so be sure to mark them. but if your wanting to change your gear set, then you will definitely need new shims. You will need a tourqe wrench, lock tighte, diff cover gasket or gasket silicon maker, prussian blue loctite for the gear meah test, and two people definitely helps. As for the axle diameter, bolts, and all that. I never had to figure all that out. I just called that company, they have already done all the research and told me exactly what I needed. For the spare spider gears, id try to look up what all vehicles GM put the 10 bolt in. Should be quite a bit. But there is a lot of silverado/Sierra's at my junk yard. So I don't think it would be to hard to find the spider gears. Or you could always order a new set offline. Hope that all helps!

@TheKingCoopa
@TheKingCoopa 4 года назад
Hey, honestly depends on what you want it for. Highway driving with better mpgs, but slow take offs, all around driving, or fast acceleration, rock crawling with terrible mpgs. But 33s arnt too drastic. If you have the 4l60e I'd definitely invest in some gears. Staying stock gears but bigger tires can be hard on the tranny sometimes. Below ill comment two links. The first one is a website that converts it for you. Type in your stock tire and gear ratio, then type in your new tire size and it will convert it for you. Your stock gear ratio you can find in your glove box. The second link is for a conversion chart for alot of different tire sizes and shows the different setups. Im no professional, but I think 3.91 gears would be good with 33s. You could always go with a lower gear ratio like 4.56 so that way, if ever down the road you change your mind, and go with a 35 or even a 37inch tire, you have the gearing to do so. And don't have to change the gears out again. Just spend some time and do some good research, there is alot of info out there, especially with installing the gears and backlash. Don't get overwhelmed, you got this 🤘

You'd be an idiot to junk the truck, you buy a 14 bolt semi float then.

Hey, by axle spacers do you mean the carrier bearings for the differential? Those were from quickperformance.com. I have direct links for all the parts in the description of this video. If you ment the 3in wheel spacers, I got those from titanwheelaccessories.com. here is a link to my video on those, if your bored. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Lyj46or5MZ8.html
