Installing A New TRANSMISSION In My $3,000 Jaguar S-Type R IT SHIFTS

I bought the cheapest Jaguar S-Type R in the nation. And the transmission is stuck in limp mode. With only 1 gear the 400HP, 400ft/lbs of torque, powered by a 4.2L Eaton supercharged V8, isn't very fun. Amber and I drove to Ft. Worth, TX to pick up a new ZF 6HP26 6 speed automatic transmission. We pulled the old transmission out, installed a new pan and filter on the one, swapped the torque converter over, cleaned the trans cooler with Kooler Kleen, then installed the new one. The STR package adds the hand built supercharged V8, upgraded styling, 18" alloy wheels, and bigger Brembo brakes.

@@martinkulik9466 I think nowerdays it is going on the way to an icon. Yes the S Type is symbiosis between Jaguar and Ford. I think it was a very good and proud symbiosis, because Ford ended the frequent defects that Jaguar has for decades before.

Extra transmission fluid can be added via the radiator cooler lines instead of all the agro with draining and refilling.

All those for wearing safety glasses say EYE! Wow, nice to have a buddy with a garage/hoist/tools! I was glad to have a friend whose dad had a construction company with a pole barn. It seems on my first cars sensed the coldest week of the year for the water pump, starter, alternator, and belts. Didn't see the pile of Liquid Ice cans, nor did I see the R8 in the garage.

@@arvidkarlberg5845 I know but...... first I tried to go cheap, got a set of four for 125 bucks. One was believed to be D.O.A so I ordered one good one (cats were replaced also) guy at the exhaust shop broke the clip that the 02 sensor plugs into. It was allegedly fixed but now i am getting the p1646 along with a couple other codes but that seems to be the main one that pops up.... thinking about just getting the other 3 done right (the expensive way lol) & having that broken one looked over again by another mechanic.

hey JR, I have a ZF in my 745li and I had that issue and I had to cross my fingers for reverse....It ended up being a solenoid kit, after I replaced and used catrol multi import....Voila its been 56k miles and shifts like 2002 again

What did you use to clean the transmission cooler. I want to try to do that to mine too see if that help. I changed the filter and the oil twice but only get about 4 quarts out each time. Gona try again get some more of the old fluid out see if the 6th gear slip goes away

As mentioned I don’t think you sorted your rear lights when you changed the bulbs months ago. The fog lights appear to be coming on when u brake.

JR- I think an interesting car for you to acquire and work on would be a 2000-2002 Lincoln LS stick shift. First stick shift Lincoln in 50 years. As you may know, it was co-developed with Jaguar. Same platform as S-Type. I replaced a 1995 BMW 525i with a 2000 LS stick and put 150K plus miles on it before trading it on a 2008 Saab 9-5. Appreciate your glass is half full optimism in today's crazy world. Jim

Love Jaguars, as long as they start. My 04 XJ8 was notorious for leaving me stranded (crank, no start) and it would only start if I scanned it for bizarre DTCs and then it was fine for a few months. Had software updates performed by Jaguar and they kept telling me that it was fine. That kitty was a ripper .

Most zf trans can be saved with a zip kit valve body rebuild . Replace celeniods and should be good to go.

One of the best ways I found is service a transmission without getting oil everywhere if you have the time and just keep mine only the dead or out of time stick a hose down to fill tube or the dipstick tube and start a siphon

These ZF 6 speeds don't have a dipstick or fill tube. Its a painful process to check level / refill.

I think you may have been lucky. Did you know that Jaguar made several different gearboxes for the S-Type and although they will all fit, if you mate the wrong one to your car it will never run properly. Nevertheless, good to watch as I had to have my one replaced by the garage, so was unable to to see how it was done.

Hey boss , I have a 2003 s type r. I've owned it since new . Recently I removed the engine and sent it to a speed shop for machining and upgrades . The trans is still in the car and I want to remove it. My question is at the back of the trans is bolts and the rubber dammper. When I disconnect the trans lines and linkage what do I disassemble at back of trans and once disconnected does it slide towards front of car to remove the shaft ? I've never removed one before so please be patient with my questions. I just want to be prepared and not make any mistakes. I want to rebuild the valve body and replace celeniods w zip kit any guidance would be really appreciated. I'm gonna start making videos when I reassemble the car. I've done some really cool cosmetic stuff like carbon fiber the intake and plastic covers etc and painting all brackets . I replaced most every part to bring the car back to new condition.

Cleaning the trans cooling lines is a good idea. I ruined a perfectly good 727 rebuild by not flushing those lines.

Guy, a question. I have S type 2006 3.0 Well, reading manual for user I read ATF fluid is for ever, not necesary change it, never. Did I read well? By the way, days ago I consulted in a pumping gas station (they change oil motor service Mobiloil brand) and he mentioned to me rhat some automatic gear box cars are is required chage fluid at 50,000 miles (80,000km) but some others is not required, it is free of changing, he told me. Do you know about it to be conpletely sure? Cristian , Santiago, Chile.

Hi JR, you said something about accelarating and deccelarating gently for the next 5 days of driving, in order for the transmission to readapt. Is this so important and, if nobody mentioned it, what can happen usually if this procedure is not respected? I have to mention that I have a zf 6hp26 transmission. Thank you very much!

You can gently accelerate to 6 gear and take foot off gas and let the car downshift at its own pace . These trans are very sensitive to dirty fluid . I had a gear box fault on mine and did valve body replace and fluid filter . The trans shifted like normal again and fault went away.

These jags are great cars and not a lot with them goes wrong the problem with the transmissions is that supposedly have lifetime fluid which is utter bollocks and people neglect changing it and they go bad or if the change it they put the wrong fluid in otherwise as long as you change the fluid and put in the correct one pretty solid cars

I've just bought an old Volvo V70 from a neighbour, in the knowledge that the autobox is dodgy. I mentioned fluid to him and he told me it couldn't be a fluid issue as it's sealed for life! Asked him to define 'life' as it's 19 years old and has been to Mars and back. Believe it or not, we works for ZF.

I let mine go way to long after the dealer told me not to open the gearbox . I had a gear box fault so I replaced the bridge seal and valve body seals. New fluid and filter the trans was like new again. The old oil was black. Fortunately no metal in old fluid . The dealers told me I needed a new trans ? 9 k + 😮

Some of the computer controlled transmissions can not be swapped without removing the internal computer and putting it back in the new box. If it is the computer that's the problem you may need to swap the ECU out as well as they can be a matched pair and reprogramming the VIN etc is easier than trying to get an unmatched pair to work together.

The proper procedure is to reset the module with a scan tool. Even if the module was replaced the new module is supposed to be programmed.

Gotta be careful now for about 500 miles as I didn’t with mine and if you do hard pulls and shit you’ll get the Jag Lurch and that’s another reset of the adaptations and fluid

Wait you said reverse engaged above reverse on the shifter. If you move the shift pattern up on the whole shifter would 3rd, not be engaged in “D”?? Just wondering if it’s possible the shifter was your issue the whole time ??

SCcarguy if the computer saw a misalignment could be. Did he read the gearbox fault codes?

Reverse would go in about 1/8" above the detent but everything else lined up. The code was "Shift solenoid D malfunction". It has an annoying Jaguar shift pattern, P>R>N>D>move shifter all the way left then up for 5>4>3>2. 😎

WatchJRGo. The gearbox does not have a solenoid labelled D so that could well of been the issue. The left side of the J gate selects gears by electric request not cable movement I believe. However the selector cable can go further than D when used in other cars/applications. Therefore the software could have detected in invalid position in a jag, however I would have thought u would have noticed the car moved forward between N & D.

@@aaronbays4 you know what it's been a few year but just a quick Google and seems like for Corvettes it was Nassau Blue Met., Camaros would be Bright Blue Met. And Trans Am would be Medium Blue. I'm sure there could be a minor difference in the mixture but also just a name change for 3 different car lines. As the old saying goes for GM in the 80s 90s and 2000s was an orange painted 5 different ways representative of all the different names for the same platform. It's still an orange.

so this is the second transmission swap in the current longevity of this car....Holy moly....Glad you and your buddies know how to change the transmission...otherwise the wallet emptying process will be endless....
