Installing a Residential Refrigerator in an RV/ Travel Trailer

Watch this video to see the step by step process of installing an off-the-shelf residential refrigerator in an RV. The old refrigerator was leaking ammonia and needed to be taken out right away. Once that was done we decided to replace this fridge with a residential off the shelf model that will only run on 120/110v. The cost savings is significant however we will not be able to run it while on the road or if we do not have a plugin where we are camping. For us that is not a factor as we always stay at state grounds and normally don't travel more than a few hours. We can cool it down pack it up and take the trip, when we arrive just plug it in.
The residential refrigerators work much better than the RV models and in this case I only paid less than $250 for the project. If I were to have replaced the cooling unit on the existing fridge it would have been about $600 and for a new one it was over $1300.

The refrigerator that I used here can be purchased from Best Buy - tinyurl.com/lvc...

Thank you so much for these videos. I have converted my trailer to a tiny home and plan to remove the non-working dometic this week and replace it with an apartment size fridge. I have a cabinet under my fridge so removing that I will have plenty of room for the apartment height fridge. I just had no clue how to take out the old fridge. So thankful you posted these videos!

Good job. The only concern I have with the added fiberglass insulation is the refrigerator will have a hard time venting the heat. it is already not designed to be built in as it is and that insulation will not allow any heat to escape

@@thatoneguy9122 better to insulate the vent on top of the roof and the vent on the back. And if possible make a small cut out on one of the side cabinets that the refrigerator is installed on. To vent the heat out.

I put almost the same frig in place of our old 2-way frig. I had to do some trim work and I made sure to use screws to mount the trim to make replacing the frig easier in the future. I plan to add an inverter and battery at a later date for boondocking.

I replaced a DometicNDR 1062 10 Cubic Foot with a Frigidaire FFTR1022QM 10 cubic foot. Looks about the same but bigger then the one you installed. Basically did the same as what you showed with a couple exceptions. Once installed the new fridge was about 1" shorter then the Dometic and I needed to remove 1/4" from the right side opening frame. I'd like to suggest for others that you can remove the front feet from the new fridge, drill holes through the floor in front where the center of the feet would be and use a longer bolt with 2 nuts and two washers which can be used to support the front to the actual floor using existing foot threads on the fridge. I also drilled the rear support as you did and installed two longer wood screws to support the back. Once flush with frame I added a small amount of insulation on top as well as the bottom. Using black electricians tape, 2" width on top and 1" width on the sides and bottom to complete the seal and match the black fridge frame. Most everything else I did like your video showed. Thanks for posting it!

Did the fridge have it’s condenser coil on the back? I ask because I have a similar unit and the condenser coils are in the sides. My concern is if your fridge is like mine then you have insulated the area of the outer box where the unit needs to radiate away the collected heat!
@Jrhnhemp
@Jrhnhemp 5 лет назад
I'm also concerned about getting rid of that heat. The mini fridge specs usually include gap dimensions and actual dimensions. I'm gonna replace a 6 cu ft with a slightly smaller size, include a little ventilation space all around and maybe a small exhaust fan through the original outer wall door. Raising the fridge on a shelf would give me room underneath for that.

If you don't lay it on the side or upside down and keep it in standing up it will work for years, even if it's jumping up on potholes. if you layer it on the side let it stand for atleast 24hrs before you plug it in.

Hello I just did the same thing in my 1999 5th wheel i got a fridge from home depot it was $239.00 but on sale labor day $178.00. I was going to some day rebuild my Dometic but i found out that the fridge was installed before the walls were up no way the original was coming out the door i had to get out my hack saw a cut off the cooling unit it still was hard to get it out but i was able to part out the Dometic and got back over 60% of the cost of the new one working fine i did no put a shelf on top i just store stuff like paper plates, foil, bread, mine had fiberglass insulation on both sides i used some to plug roof vent but left bottom louvered vent their for cooling the fridge i got was a Whirlpool 4.3 Cf.

Excellent video. How is your fridge holding up? My Dometic propane fridge in my camper just died yesterday and I'm thinking of doing the same thing you did. Do you know how many watts it runs when the compressor is on? There should be a label on the back some where with the specs. I can't find the power requirements any where. I do all of my camping off grid, with solar providing my power, so that's a concern. Thanks for any info.

I know you wrote this six years ago but this is a great video and I appreciate you doing it! I have a 2008 Keystone Passport. This is a 4400 pound ultralight that’s about 27 feet long. Contemplating doing exactly this on mine. A couple of quick questions: first did you install the AC outlet that was behind your refrigerator or did it already happen to have that there as an option? Second, I believe our Dometic refrigerator, wyhich is propane/electric, is about 6 ft.³. I think that you said that your residential refrigerator was about 4 ft.³ but just looking at the inside of it on the video it looks as big as mine. Could it be that your freezer and refrigerator together are about 6 ft.³? In any event, we will do our homework and take measurements but this looks like a very good option for someone like myself that’s always going to have hook ups.

I noticed you didn't put the Styrofoam insulation on the ceiling of the compartment, may I ask why? Some say insulate & some say don't. So just curious? I'm presently doing the same thing, but the fridge I'm installing is a bit narrower, as well as a bit shorter. Was wondering how to fill the gaps & make sure it doesn't move while traveling? This video came on my feed just in time, so thank you! There were only 2 rv fridges available for mine, but they were $1700 & $1900! Just for the fridge! 😳 So I decided to go with a residential & upgrade my solar & I'm still saving hundreds!

I heard residential 110 volt refrigerators can't hold up to the bouncing and trauma from the road. they also need a space in the back for the cooling coils to displace the heat.

Old class A P30s almost always have a viable generator, but even properly functioning gas appliances in a motor home make me nervous. Usually, the motor-home can be run on generator power on the road, and 120 volts AC when "camping". 120 volt AC refrigerators are so relatively inexpensive and reliable, why not just switch to 120 volts AC appliances?

I am a full time boondocker. My refrigerator went out and I would love to replace it with a smallish residential unit - but I read an article that stated that a residential unit will not last very long in an rv because it is constructed of aluminum parts. I looked at the marine/rv compressor refrigerators (which are made of steel) and the cost alone stopped me in my tracks. Do you full time? Is your unit still working? I figure that I could buy at least 5 of these for the cost of the cheapest marine/rv unit. But if breaks the first or second time out - I'd end up buying several of these a year. So - is your unit still working after two years?
@SSLFamilyDad
@SSLFamilyDad 7 лет назад
I honestly would not worry too much about it breaking unless you go off- roading in your RV. Ours has held up fine and doesn't seem to be letting up any time soon.
@deborahchandler7618
@deborahchandler7618 7 лет назад
GayleO O This is what we were told by the appliance salesman, and it's correct. If you simply install a residential refrigerator into the current box opening, you will void the warranty if you do not open up a side wall and leave side wall open. Installing 110v unit into the old boxed opening allows too much heat to build up. Warranty voids if the new unit is not open on at least 2 sides. We removed the side wall next to the bench seat and increased the vent size on the exterior wall. You can also install a small exhaust fan (like for a CPU) at base of the new refrigerator to circulate airflow. Worked great for us.
@SSLFamilyDad
@SSLFamilyDad 7 лет назад
+Deborah Chandler ours is open in back and on top so I assume that would count. There is also a ceiling vent in there above it and an outside vent where you access it so no heat buildup. They are designed to ventilate well since the rv refrigerators generate just as much heat in ac mode
@deborahchandler7618
@deborahchandler7618 7 лет назад
Hi, and thanks for the reply. We were told that no, the spacing you currently have does not meet the warranty requirements because I'm assuming you don't have the refrigerator back totally exposed to the outside air. The Magic Chef and Frigidaire people were very specific that a side wall must be open. If you think about your home kitchen unit, most are against 1 side wall, against a back wall and have a cabinet spaced over the top. That leaves the front and 1 side wall open. That's what you need to maintain warranty for a refridge that is NOT specifically a slide-in. If you don't care about warranty due to low costing unit, then this is all moot.

@Evil_Morty2000 5 лет назад

@billmisemer109
@billmisemer109 5 лет назад
I do believe there is a vent in the ceiling that should be insulated and closed off and also the outside access door needs to be insulated, the way you have it done in the video will let climate in as well as insects... But I'm sure you figured that out in the 5 years you've had to deal with it... lol

My new fridge will be smaller than the opening I currently have as I will be taking out a double door model for rvs ( I plan on finishing out with reclaimed wood and paneling, kind of making it a nook) Do I still need to leave that whole open in the back? @SSLFamilyDad

You don’t really need to but you need to have some space or way for the heat from the compressor to dissipate
@VitoF111
@VitoF111 9 лет назад
Very nice, but... Not sure I agree with insulating the refrigerator compartment. The RV absorption refrigerator compartment is insulated because it uses a flame/heat to boil the ammonia compound. A residential refrigerator needs airflow around it for cooling the compressor and coils. Most residential refrigerator installation manuals state they need 1" above and below for air circulation. This assumes you block off the roof and rear vents to outside air. If you leave the roof and rear vents open, then you are cooling it with outside air and subject to extreme temperatures.
@SSLFamilyDad
@SSLFamilyDad 9 лет назад
+Vito A The insulation just keeps it snug on each side, the back and top are all open all the way up through the roof vents.

I see you have the furnace below like mine does. I was curious if you have any concerns about carbon monoxide coming through since there's some gaps around the fridge (top particularly). The furnace should be sealed and that gap should not allow any carbon monoxide to come in. However, you should always have a carbon monoxide detector working in the trailer when in use.

I did a similar replacement but with a taller fridge. It was a Haier from Home Depot, and it was a huge improvement over the standard absorption type, in my opinion. I left the back open and the top vent in place for proper air flow and heat exchanging. Start up current was about .9 amps and running current was about .6 amps. It used less power than the old unit did. I used an inline meter to check amps, watts, and voltage, a P3 P4400 Kill A Watt Electricity Usage Monitor.

I did not drain any propane, just shut of the valve on the tank and use a black pipe cap or plug. Normally it is 1/2" if the piping is rigid black pipe. If it is flexible copper see if you can trace it back to the main line and plug it there.

Funny. We just bought this exact same fridge today and will be done installing it in our small travel trailer. I installed 275 watts of solar so with an inverter can let this run while driving down the road too. And since this fridge only consumes 1.45 amps it's a cake walk. $299 vs. $1300? A no brainer. Doubt I will ever mess with an over priced RV fridge ever again.

You were probably able to get the fridge, solar, inverter, and a battery for under $1300!
@MoParRus340
@MoParRus340 6 лет назад
SSLFamilyDad actually I already had solar and a pair of T-105’s. I have used solar for several years because you never have batteries go down. Even when not using the RV. But yes, more and more people are going to start doing this as they realize how much better and cheaper this route is. This particular little fridge also is frost free and has internal circulation fans. Don’t find THAT in absorption fridges.

So what about the ventilation for the frig, they can over heat in an enclosed area.
@SSLFamilyDad
@SSLFamilyDad 9 лет назад
Joy Kindrick Has not been an issue and there is plenty of room on the sides and above the frig. There is also a vent on the room above that compartment in most trailers as well as a lower vent where you access the back of the frig. Hope that helps!

Nice video. Are you sure you used a 4.5 cu ft fridge? For the price range you are talking about, I could only find the Frigidaire 3.1 cu. ft. model (i.e., Best Buy) for about $225 with free shipping. The 4.5 cu. ft model goes for around $330.

Here is the model that I have installed here. I caught it on sale for just under $300 and also had a $50 off through their rewards program. Regular price is $330 on the fridge you are 100% correct on that and I probably should have specified regular price, sorry about that. Thanks for watching! tinyurl.com/lvczkfh

..i currently have a 6x10 haulmark transport cargo trailer.reg says 2990 gvwr. it has 205/75d14 tires on it.,,,,,my problem is my garage door opening is 84 " high .but the trailer measure aprox 86 1/2 inches high. i was able to get it into my garage just barley by flattening the tire. but makes it very unpractical to use having to re-inflate and deflate with every use. have to keep it garaged due to HOA rules i'm thinking of changing the rims and tires from the 14 inch to a 12 inch in the homes of gaing the clearance i need to pull it in and out without messing with the tire inflation...... but can my trailer run safely on a 12 inch tire with a d rating ? also will the 12 inch give me the additional aprox i need to clear the garage height ?.......any thoughts or recommendations?
@palangnar3588

No, you shouldn't change the rims to 12 in, you could fix your garage door( make it higher), unless attached garage, your trailer needs to have 14 in rims!.. A Knows-it-all from Canada

Just bought a used travel trailer and dude said the fridge worked but not so sure it does. No ammonia smell though. I dunno. It freaks me out so may go with this option. We don't "travel" in it so being all locked down isn't a worry. Mine is smaller it's a norcold fridge with freezer inside. Maybe 4-5 cu ft.

Lynnette Workman That sounds a lot like what happened to us as well, we were told it all "works" but I guess it didn't. WE have been happy with our choice to save a thousand dollars so far:)

SSLFamilyDad I think I'd wanna swap it out anyway. Not interested in that gas/electric biz. However the gas ignitor does work. No ammonia smell etc., but I want an electric fridge. I hope it goes smoothly. Any suggestions on the hot water heater? It won't light but fills abd does not leak. I'd be LOST without you tubers such as yourself :)
@SSLFamilyDad
@SSLFamilyDad 9 лет назад
Lynnette Workman If it does not light are you getting spark at the igniter? check to make sure you have all the gas turned on and also hold down the pilot igniter for a long time to bleed out all of the air until you can smell gas coming out, then try to light it. Use a long stick match if you thing the spark is not working. Maybe that will help otherwise look up the model and see if you can find a cheap replacement for the burner assembly.

Great Video. Our Dometic 2652 has had two cooling units in 4 years (the original and one placed in it 2 years ago. Now it needs another one. So we are wanting to go with a residential for our travel trailer. My only concern is having enough amps to run a/c and fridge and whatever else needs electric at one time. Did you have any issues or modifications that is needed to make sure all electric works? Also one more question. We sometimes travel 8 to 10 hours a day, do we just put dry ice in the fridge until we get to our campsites? Again, appreciate your video
@SSLFamilyDad
@SSLFamilyDad 9 лет назад
Debbie Ainolhayat Our has been working just fine and they actually do not pull that much power so that should not be a concern. As far as long trips go it would be best to grab a battery and an inverter and just let it run while you are on the road. Dry ice would be fine also, anything over about 4 hours and things will start to thaw a bit in the freezer. Fridge stays pretty cool for 4-5 hours. Hope that helps and good luck!
@patcourtney258
@patcourtney258 9 лет назад
Debbie Ainolhayat I have had 120 volts refrigerators in 5 motor homes. When traveling I plug the refrigerator into an extension cord that is plugged into an inverter which is attached to the vehicle battery (I have a transfer switch). The refrigerator stays cold and will make ice while traveling. The size of the inverter depends on the refrigerator Amps draw. Most such refrigerators (8 amps or less) will run on a 750 - 1000 watts inverter. The important part is to have a disconnect switch in one of the two the 12 volts line going TO the inverter (or remember to turn off the inverter) , otherwise it will drain the vehicle battery when the vehicle is not running.

Hi Pat, We have a travel trailer. I guess my question would be should I get one more 12V battery and an inverter along with a transfer switch assigned only to the residential fridge? I am hearing good things about residential fridges. Thanks for your help.
@patcourtney258
@patcourtney258 9 лет назад
Debbie Ainolhayat Hello Debbie, The refrigerators that I used were very large. If a smaller refrigerator is used, about 4.3 cu ft or less, the 120 volts amp draw is usually less than 2 amps, sometimes 1 amp. For a travel , trailer, I would use a similar set up as previously described. Mount an inverter on the vehicle battery and run a 14 gauge extension cord to the rear bumper of the vehicle. Run a 14 gauge extension cord from the refrigerator to the tongue of the trailer. When the trailer is hooked up to the vehicle, plug the 2 cords together. Raise the hood of the vehicle and switch on the inverter. When the trailer is disconnected from the vehicle, turn off the inverter, under the hood, and disconnect the 2 extension cords. Then disconnect the refrigerator from the inside portion of the extension cord and plug the refrigerator into a 120 volts wall plug and therefore, use shore power. The small amp draw of the refrigerator will not be enough to cause a problem with your 30 amps input. If you use a small amp draw refrigerator, a 400 watts inverter, on the vehicle battery, will provide about 3.5 amps of 120 AC volts, which will power the refrigerator while traveling. If you do not wish to have to remember to turn off/on the inverter each time, a simple disconnect can be a solenoid switch placed in the 12 volts line between the battery and the inverter. Activation for the solenoid can be provided by running a 12 volts line from the fuse box to the solenoid. The wire should be attached to spot that is only powered when the ignition switch is on. A continuous duty solenoid switch must be used. Surpluscenter.com has a 80 amps switch for about $10.00. Pat Courtney

@SSLFamilyDad
@SSLFamilyDad 5 лет назад
You would have to look at your fridge and check the amp draw. Then calculate out if it were to run non stop for 24 hours how many watts it would use per hour and then how much you could bank with solar to keep it going. You always want to oversize your solar and inverter and batteries

i went to home depot to look at friges and while talking to the appliance guy he put a new term on me. HE TOLD ME I MIGHT NEED TO GET A GARAGE READY FRIDGE. I thought i knew a lot but told him what is a garage ready. he said said it has extra heater and is built not to let the lines freeze up in winter like setting in a garage. do you know about this being a good idea for a rv. in doing more checking Frigidaire he told me was mostly all garage ready. home depot had a Haier. but it wasnt garage ready but i did like the unit. please coment on this garage ready and should i seal the back wall off from the outside. my rv unit is a rm 2852. i dont know what frige to put in its place.
@SSLFamilyDad
@SSLFamilyDad 7 лет назад
+jon new I have never heard of garage ready but since you won't be using it in below freezing most likely anyway it does matter. Also even though the back is exposed via the vents it stays pretty warm back there even if it were cold out. Bottom line, any fridge should be fine
@okiebbq2536
@okiebbq2536 7 лет назад
Thanks. I will try to insulate the back but might think if ill close the sides in. While looking at the fridges last night i learned another new term. Lg uses inverter controlled compressor and the power is cut in half at least. Im thinking about moving and taking my home fridge but ill leave it now. Im going to check into this for central air or heat pump.
@okiebbq2536
@okiebbq2536 7 лет назад
I think heat pumps for home heat save 50 percent over electric. I will check and see if cutting that heatpump bill in half by using inverter compressor will cut the heatpump bill in half. If so that would be 1/4th the bill of electric. My family in michigan is paying 500 a month . Ill do some checking.
